Supersedes #2230 (dependabot's branch predates main's module renames, so it no longer applies). Same 18 updates, with Norrie's commit for the tokio change carried over onto the renamed file.

Why now

russh 0.63.3 → 0.64.1 carries two security fixes:

  • GHSA-j7h2-66j4-ghjf — the russh server accepted public-key authentication whose signature used an algorithm other than the negotiated one. No bypass, but a client could silently downgrade its own signature (rsa-sha2-512 to rsa-sha1). minimald is a russh server.
  • GHSA-4wc5-f2rc-q74m — unbounded allocation in the agent protocol server from a crafted constraint record.

The one breaking change in 0.64.0 drops the legacy ed25519 key parser feature, which this workspace does not enable.

The rest

tokio 1.53.3 (AsyncFd::new on a raw fd becomes the unsafe register: the two call sites, the tap device in net/switch.rs and the PTY master in box_runtime.rs, take it with a safety note), serde_json 1.0.154, uuid 1.28, tokio-util 0.7.20, smallvec, sha2 0.11.1, either, indoc, the opentelemetry crates at 0.33.1, and dev-only bumps (proptest 1.12, insta 1.49, arbitrary 1.5, rand_xorshift 0.5).

Evidence

  • clippy and the full test suite on the box (lab, this branch on main 9ea9433): see the comment below once the lab reports.
  • Lab matrix of the exec and stdin scenarios (789b–789z, 793, 796), which is the surface a russh bump can move, plus the nightly-set sweep against main: lab jobs 01000–01002.

📝 Walkthrough

The workspace updates russh from 0.63 to 0.64. PTY and tap file setup now uses AsyncFd::register instead of AsyncFd::new.

Changes: russh dependency update

Layer / File(s) Summary
Update russh version
Cargo.toml
The workspace dependency version changes from 0.63 to 0.64. The existing feature selections remain unchanged.

AsyncFd file registration

Layer / File(s) Summary
Register PTY and tap files
crates/minimald/src/box_runtime.rs, crates/minimald/src/net/switch.rs
PTY master and tap file setup use AsyncFd::register. The PTY setup adds a safety comment about file ownership and descriptor stability. Tap registration errors continue to propagate.

Current builds select the patched release, but the dependency requirement should require 0.64.1 so a compatible older lockfile cannot restore the affected version. This is a bounded issue to fix before merging.

Explanation

The title clearly identifies the primary change: a dependency update to russh and the related cargo group. It is slightly awkward because it includes superseded PR and branch context, but it remains relevant and understandable.

Full details: Description check

Explanation

The description explains the dependency updates, security motivation, breaking-change impact, and validation evidence. It does not use the required "## Summary", "## Testing", and "## Checklist" headings, and it does not include the checklist items explicitly, but the required information is mostly present.

Explanation

Docstring coverage is 100.00% which is sufficient. The required threshold is 80.00%. Docstring coverage is scoped to functions touched by this diff. Analyzed 2 functions across 2 files. (1 skipped: 1 unsupported.)

Hold before merging, please. The lab's exec matrix on this branch (lab job 01001, four distros, two rounds, main 9ea9433 beside it) shows a regression in one scenario, 789b-exec-stdin-stdout-concurrent-vm: concurrent stdin and stdout on one exec channel, with cat round-tripping 1 to 5 MB three times per size. On main all six cells pass, 0 stalls in 90 duplex runs. With russh 0.64.1, four of six cells fail, with 1 to 3 of their 15 duplex runs stalling at 4 or 5 MB (debian-12 twice, debian-13, ubuntu-24.04). The one-direction controls pass at every size on both, so it is the duplex case: the exec-channel deadlock #2197 is about (inbox#1089, russh#730), which 0.64 now reaches where 0.63.3 did not. Every other scenario in the set is the same on both sides. Queued next: a candidate with this bump plus #2197's drain, to see whether the drain absorbs it, and a read of what 0.64 changed in channel flow control. Results here when they land. The security fixes make the bump worth taking once that is understood.

Lab results are in, and the hold can come off with one condition on the order.

What the box measured (scenario 789b-exec-stdin-stdout-concurrent-vm, 15 duplex exec runs per cell, four distros; main is d67d78e):

candidate 789b fails / cells
main alone 4 / 24 (and 6 / 24 in a second run)
main + this bump (russh 0.64.1 + the cargo group) 10 / 24
main + russh 0.64.1 only 3 / 24
main + the group without russh 5 / 24
main + #2197's drain + this bump 0 / 8, and six other exec scenarios flip from fail to pass

So the stall is not this bump's. Main stalls 789b on its own, 1–2 of 15 duplex runs at 4–5 MB, which is inbox#1089's latent deadlock; neither russh alone nor the rest of the group alone moves that rate outside its spread, and the 10/24 of the first run reads as the same latent stall under a different timing. With #2197's drain in place the bump passes every cell.

Recommendation: land #2197 first, then this bump on top of it. #2354 (the newer group, same russh) is red on clippy for exactly the AsyncFd::new deprecation that @norrietaylor's commit here fixes, so this PR is the vehicle: #2354 rebases onto it afterwards and carries only the patch-level bumps that remain. Landing the bump before the drain would ship a main that stalls at the same rate it does today, only with a different russh under it; landing it after ships one that does not.

The per-run reports are on the lab box under results/overnight/c5-789b-deps, c5-789b-russhonly, c5-789b-tokioonly and c5-draindeps-drain.

The confidence run is done, and it is as clean as it gets.

The configuration that will ship, with and without this bump, side by side on main d67d78e + #2197's drain: the whole exec family (789b/789c/789e/789t/789v/789x/789y/789z + baseline) × 6 rounds × 4 distros. Every cell is identical between drain-only and drain + bump; 789b is 6/6 on all four distros on both sides. The nightly set, drain + bump vs main: no regressions (the one differing cell is the known 710-pdeathsig-sibling-kill flake, which flipped both ways).

So: main stalls 789b on its own today (inbox#1089), #2197 fixes it, and this bump changes nothing on top of #2197. Two more reasons to land it right after #2197 rather than later: both open Dependabot alerts on main are russh and 0.64.1 closes both, GHSA-4wc5-f2rc-q74m (moderate, unbounded allocation in the agent-protocol server) and GHSA-j7h2-66j4-ghjf (low, a server accepting a publickey auth whose signature algorithm differs from the claimed one), and minimald is the server.

Order: #2197, then this PR (it carries the AsyncFd::register change the tokio side needs). Reports on the lab box: results/overnight/c5-russh-exec6 and c5-russh-sweep.

One more data point, details on #2224: the combined candidate (this bump + #2197's drain + the #2224 stack on main 559a1d8) shows no regressions over 15 scenarios x 2 rounds x 4 distros, with every fix scenario of the three changes at 8/8 and 789b at 8/8. The three do not interfere.

tokio 1.53.3 deprecates AsyncFd::new as unsound: it cannot prove that
the fd stays open and unchanged while the AsyncFd lives
(tokio-rs/tokio#8587). With clippy's -D warnings the deprecation fails
the build.

Both call sites, the PTY master and the tap device, now call
AsyncFd::register. Each SAFETY comment states why the fd stays valid:
the AsyncFd owns the File, and nothing reaches it to close or replace
the fd.
The group bump's lock still named sha2 0.11.0, which main's sign-in work
had moved on from; merged, the lock no longer matched the manifests and
the merge queue's --locked builds refused it.
