fix(minimal): name the held port in finalize-install's names item - #2309
norrietaylor merged 6 commits into
Conversation
The fallback listing attached a control socket only when the daemon connection resolved through the minvmd backend, so a native minimald listing carried none. finalize-install's names item then had no status to read and collapsed its cause to the no-daemon text, even while the daemon it had just reached reported the answerer port held by another program. Pair the fallback listing with the answerer control socket beside the daemon's ssh socket on either backend - a VM host daemon and a native minimald answer the same status verb over it - and drop the gate that keyed the socket on the provider kind. The held-port warning keeps its fact but loses its VM-specific wording, the same state being reported by both backends. Co-authored-by: Copilot <223556219+Copilot@users.noreply.github.com>
The fallback listing now reads a native minimald's answerer status too, so the no-channel arm of vm_host_answerer_line reaches native hosts; drop its "this VM's" so a host with no VM is not told about one, matching the held-port warning's own rewording.

A listing whose control-socket status read answered takes its verdict from that status, so it no longer also feeds the daemon-report verdict, which ran the list's resolver detection a second time on a native host. Docs on the control-socket read now say a native minimald answers the same status verb beside its ssh socket, and the held-port integration test reuses answering_control_sock.
The native fallback listing now reads the answerer status too, and the status verdict replaced the daemon-report one, swapping a native daemon's bound report for a liveness query keyed on the VM host's row: the native session e2e lost its BOX NAMES line. A listing whose daemon reports an answerer port keeps that daemon's verdict, the precedence its DNS SERVICE row already prints with, so each listing pays one detection.

The new integration test passes
falsetoresolve_socket_path, so it covers the native fallback. The VM-host formatting test supplies a status directly toformat_ls, and the session test coversvm_host_answerer_status, not the fallback branch inlistings_across_vms. A regression in the VM-host fallback socket selection can therefore makefinalize-installmiss the held-port status and report the no-daemon cause. Add a test that reaches the VM-host fallback branch and asserts the status-derived held-port cause.🤖 Prompt for AI Agents

Approved: no findings at Nothing to do. |
… a held port A daemon that hosted the interim or published to the service and then lost its port kept zone_answerer_port set while its status said PortHeldNoChannel. min ls trusts a daemon-reported port over the status read, so its DNS SERVICE row said names resolved while finalize-install --show named the held port. surface_error now clears the reported port with the status it sets, so the daemon report and the status agree and the existing precedence holds.

Defect:
min finalize-install --showlabelled the DNS names item "no daemon is reachable" while a reachable native minimald had reported its answerer port 127.0.0.1:7656 held by another program.Cause: the fallback listing attached an answerer control socket only when the daemon connection resolved through the minvmd backend, so a native listing carried none and the names item's status read collapsed to the no-daemon cause.
Change: the fallback listing now pairs the daemon it reached with the answerer control socket beside its ssh socket on either backend — a VM host daemon and a native minimald answer the same status verb over it — and the held-port warning names no host kind, both backends reporting the same state.
Tests: the unit test pinning the old minvmd-only control-socket rule is replaced by an integration test that drives the real test daemon plus a control socket reporting the held port, and asserts the names item's cause names that port.

cargo fmt --all --check --manifest-path target/Cargo.toml— cleancargo clippy --workspace --all-targets --locked --manifest-path target/Cargo.toml -- -D warnings— cleancargo test --locked --manifest-path target/Cargo.toml -p minimal— all tests pass except one pre-existing libtest capture artifact (legacy_network_spellings_parse_with_hint), which fails identically on a clean checkout ofmainand passes under the crate's nextest lane or with--nocapture; it is unrelated to this change.Summary by CodeRabbit
This also changes minimald (
crates/minimald/src/net/answerer.rs). When the daemon sets the answerer status to "port held, no channel", it now clears the answerer port it reports, somin lsandmin finalize-install --showagree about the held port.
