fix(minvmd): keep a dormant creation's loopback address claimed - #2348
norrietaylor merged 5 commits into
Conversation
A daemon restarted after a box detached reloads its creations but publishes only standing rows, so its answerer's fresh address book does not know a dormant creation's loopback is taken: it hands the address to a new box, a duplicate lands in the box registry, and the dormant box can then never resume. Three folds close it: - the answerer's zone rows now fold the registry's dormant creations, so a restarted daemon claims their loopbacks and a fresh box draws a different address; - the persisted registry drops a creation whose loopback an earlier entry already holds, so a file an older run could have written twice reloads the first box at the address only; - a resume whose loopback moved is re-homed at the answerer's allocation when no live row answers with the creation's address, so the refusal is only ever a live row's. A resume no longer re-homes a dormant creation at a moved loopback. The client checks the reply against the pair it sent, so a moved pair left its creator unable to resume or withdraw the box. A moved allocation is refused as before. A dormant creation now travels to the answerer as an address-only row. It claims its loopback in the book but holds no name, so it never wins a name from another node's live box. The fold skips an address a row already carries, and a name hold with no address no longer stops the claim.
|
Round 1 of 10 on a /revise note, pushed as No Review threads the coder judged:
A resumed box keeps the loopback address it was created with, so its creator can still resume and withdraw it with the pair it was handed. A restarted daemon still claims each dormant creation's loopback address in the answerer's book. The claim is an address-only row: it holds no name, so it cannot take a name from another node's live box, and it is skipped when another row already carries that address. Notes from the agent: Item 1: I removed the re-home on resume (fold 3) and kept the address stable. A moved allocation is refused with LoopbackMoved, as on main. The re-home test is now a_resume_never_moves_the_creation_to_another_loopback. Item 3 does not apply any more, because nothing moves. Item 2 and thread 2: zone_rows skips a dormant creation when a row already carries its address, or when a row of the same name carries an address. A name hold with no address no longer stops the claim. Item 4: RegisteredRow has a new wire field, address_only (serde default false, not serialised when false). install_validated does not apply the name rules to an address-only row, and the name-clash lookup ignores address-only rows. The answerer's zone fold skips them, so they answer nothing. A shared answerer older than this change reads the field as absent and treats the dormant row as a named not-live row. Optional items: the registry file keeps no registration time, so the reload cannot know the earliest registration. It keeps the first entry in file order, and I corrected the test comment to say so. I did not put zone_view() and dormant_creation_rows() under one lock. They take different locks (rows/stopped against creations), and a change to the lock order is outside this round. A race between the two reads lasts until the next publish, which corrects it. The PR description still describes the re-home and its test, and it needs an update. just clippy-strict was not run. |

The registry file is in name order, so on reload a dormant creation that sorted first evicted a standing one at the same loopback, and the rewrite dropped the standing creation for good. Sort the loaded creations standing-first (stable) before the duplicate check.
|
Round 2 of 10 on a /revise note, pushed as No Review threads the coder judged:
When the persisted box registry holds two creations at one loopback address, a reload keeps the standing creation even if a dormant one sorts first by name. The rewritten file keeps the standing box, so its next resume finds its creation. The test a_registry_file_holding_one_loopback_twice_keeps_the_standing_box shows this with a dormant api and a standing web. Notes from the agent: Item 2 of the note (update the PR description) is not done. I have no credential for gh and cannot edit the pull request body. Suggested change to the description: remove the third fold (the re-home of a resume whose loopback moved) and its test. Say that the reload keeps the standing creation first, then the first in file order, when two creations share a loopback. Also list the new test a_registry_file_holding_one_loopback_twice_keeps_the_standing_box. The clippy -D warnings failure is in minimald-rpc and is outside this diff. |

…he box range (gominimal#2332) * fix(minvmd): hand boxes the interim when the host cannot bind the range Allocation drew an address out of the reserved 127.0.64.0/24 without measuring whether the host can bind it. Linux routes the whole of 127.0.0.0/8, but macOS answers only the addresses lo0 carries, so on a host without the range aliases the hand was dead: the zone answered an address at which nothing listens, while the box actually publishes at 127.0.0.1. A publish may not claim an address the host cannot bind, so allocation now probes the freshly resolved address with a TcpListener bind to port 0 and hands the 127.0.0.1 interim instead when the bind refuses; the address the guest then publishes is the one the zone answers, and every part agrees. A host that gains the aliases mid-way hands range addresses out on the next allocation. Co-authored-by: Copilot <223556219+Copilot@users.noreply.github.com> * fix(minvmd): keep a box's address across the bind probe A box created at the 127.0.0.1 interim now keeps it on resume: the resume does not ask the answerer, which records nothing for an interim box and would hand a range address once the host binds the range. A box's own held or quarantined address comes back without the probe, so its address never moves under it. The probe reads only EADDRNOTAVAIL as an unaliased range and logs a warning with the error. Any other bind error refuses the allocation. Unit tests take a probe that always binds, so hosts without the lo0 aliases still hand distinct range addresses in the service-path tests. * fix(minvmd): read the box range through the one whole-range probe The address book now hands a fresh box address only when switch::loopback::probe reads the whole box range present, so a partial alias set gets the 127.0.0.1 interim, as min list advises finalize-install. The per-address bind copy is gone. A probe refused for any reason other than an absent address still refuses the allocation. The probe is a field of AddressBook: the live probe in production, a present range under test, so the service-path tests hand range addresses on a Mac without the lo0 aliases. The warning that the range is absent is logged once per episode, with the probe's summary. A control test proves a box created at the interim resumes at 127.0.0.1 after the host gains the range while a new box gets a range address, and the book test now asserts the range address only for a new box. * fix(minvmd): keep a range box's address on resume after a restart A restarted answerer holds no record of a dormant box. Where the host could not bind the box range, a resume of a range box was handed the 127.0.0.1 interim and refused as LoopbackMoved. The resume now sends the address the box was created at. The book hands it back without the range probe and records it, while no other box holds it or released it inside its quarantine. An answerer that predates the field ignores it. * fix(minvmd): build gominimal#2348's dormant-creation test against allocate's keep The merged test calls RegisteredTables::allocate without the keep argument this branch added. Pass None there, and say at the fresh registration's call site why it keeps no address. --------- Co-authored-by: gominimal-aw-bot[bot] <281738952+gominimal-aw-bot[bot]@users.noreply.github.com> Co-authored-by: Copilot <223556219+Copilot@users.noreply.github.com> Co-authored-by: minimal-foundry[bot] <327719912+minimal-foundry[bot]@users.noreply.github.com> Co-authored-by: Norrie Taylor <91171431+norrietaylor@users.noreply.github.com>

After a daemon restart, a dormant creation's loopback was invisible to the fresh answerer's address book: the book handed it to a new box, the persisted registry loaded both, and the dormant box could never resume.
Three folds close it: the answerer's zone rows now fold the registry's dormant creations, so a restarted daemon claims their loopbacks; the persisted registry drops a creation whose loopback an earlier entry already holds; a resume whose loopback moved is re-homed at the answerer's allocation when no live row answers with the creation's address.
