refactor(orchestrator): move DeliverableRef into a leaf ids module - #2340
Conversation
The state and traits modules imported each other: traits pulled DeliverableRef from state for the Backend method signatures while state bounded its generic types on traits::Backend. Move DeliverableRef into traits so the dependency points one way only, with the field pub(crate) so state can still construct it. The public path orchestrator::DeliverableRef is unchanged. Both state and traits now import DeliverableRef from ids, which imports neither. The field is private, with pub(crate) new and index accessors, so only state builds one from an arena index.

Round 1 of 10 on a /revise note, pushed as No DeliverableRef is now in a leaf module, crates/orchestrator/src/ids.rs, which imports neither state nor traits. Both state.rs and traits.rs import it from there, and orchestrator::DeliverableRef is still the public path. The field is private. Only state builds a DeliverableRef, through pub(crate) DeliverableRef::new, and it reads the index through index(). The doc comment links crate::Deliverable and crate::State, and the typo 'A references to' is gone. Notes from the agent: Required item 1 is done only in part. The DeliverableRef edge is gone. The traits -> state edge for StateHandle remains, and the state -> traits edge for the Backend bound remains, so the modules still import each other. That cycle is a type-level mutual recursion: every Backend method takes &mut StateHandle, and StateHandle<B: Backend> (with Deliverable and DeliverableState, which use B::Artifact) needs the Backend bound. To remove it, the Backend trait API must change, or the two must merge into one module. Neither is a no-functional-change refactor, so I did not do it. The pull request title still says 'break the state/traits cycle'. I cannot retitle the pull request because I have no gh credential. A person must retitle it, for example 'refactor(orchestrator): move DeliverableRef into a leaf ids module', or the runner must update the body. The body also still says DeliverableRef moved into traits.rs and that the tuple field is pub(crate). Both statements are now out of date. The optional items are done: the field is private with pub(crate) new() (plus a pub(crate) index() accessor for the arena lookups in state), and the doc links and typo are fixed. A full cargo test -p orchestrator exits 101 only because rustdoc is not on this box, so the doctests did not run. I did not run just ci or the native-daemon-e2e lane. |

traits.rsstill importsStateHandlefromstate.rs, whilestate.rsbounds its types onBackendfromtraits. MovingDeliverableReftoidsremoves only one dependency. If breaking the cycle is required, redesign the shared API to remove one module edge. Otherwise, update the PR title and description. This is an architectural mismatch, not a major behavioral issue.🤖 Prompt for AI Agents
