…andle Review round on #2231. The slot every `SessionHandle` holder reads carried the whole `HostHandle`, so any holder could kill, attach to or rename the host without the actor, which serializes those and checks an attach first. It now carries an `AttrsProbe` that can only read the host's attrs. And the parked-actor test covered only a session without a host: a new test parks the actor with a live host in the slot and asserts its attrs are listed at once. Review at head 70c5f09. The change is correct: a listing now probes the host from the slot the actor publishes, so a parked actor no longer adds the probe timeout per session. The lock guard is not held across an await.
CI has not run on this head because the base is not main. Please let CI run after #2224 lands and this PR targets main.

Two points about when the slot changes. Neither blocks the merge.
-
handle_messagesends its reply beforepublish_hostruns on this line. A caller that awaitsensure_hostor attach and then reads attrs can still see the old slot on the multi-thread runtime. No production caller does this today. The testensure_host_launches_an_unattached_host_and_then_reuses_itassertsis_someright afterensure_host, and it passes only because#[tokio::test]uses the current-thread runtime. Publish before the reply, or document the window. -
The
breakabove this line exits without clearing the slot, and a panic in the actor does the same. The slot keeps a sender to the host's mailbox, so the host loop never sees its channel close, andmin lskeeps reporting attrs for a session whose actor is gone. A drop guard that sets the slot toNonefixes both cases.

Both fixed in e36f6cf.
- The slot is now also published where a host is installed (
mint_session_host,launch_host_for_hooks). That runs before the message replies, so a caller that awaitsensure_hostor an attach and then reads attrs sees the new host.ensure_host_launches_an_unattached_host_and_then_reuses_itnow runs on a multi-thread runtime, so it pins that order. - A guard in the actor's loop empties the slot however the loop ends, a teardown's
breakor a panic. The host's mailbox then closes, andmin lsreports no attrs for an actor that is gone.an_ended_actors_slot_is_emptiedcovers thebreak.

LOW · tests · confidence 0.50 · in an_ended_actors_slot_is_emptied
The test puts a host in the slot, then reads it at once. The actor overwrites the slot after any message it still handles, so a late message from session creation can clear the host and fail the first assert. Wait for the actor to be idle first, for example with a round-trip message, before the put.
What the reviewer checked
handle.put_host_for_test(HostHandle::answering_attrs()); assert!(handle.get_attrs().await.is_some(), ...) with no actor sync between; mainloop calls self.publish_host() after every message.

First verify this against the code yourself. It is model output and
may be wrong. If it is wrong, or the tradeoff was deliberate, say so
and change nothing.

Right, a message still queued from the creation could have cleared the put. Fixed in a36e8fa: the test makes one round trip through the actor's mailbox (a record read) before the put; the mailbox is in order, so nothing older is behind the answer.

The production change reads right: every install site (ensure_host, mint_session_host, launch_host_for_hooks) publishes the host before replying, stop_running empties the slot, ClearSlotOnExit empties it whether the loop breaks or panics, the std Mutex guard is never held across an .await, and the slot exposes only attrs. My thread at box_actor.rs:2027 is addressed.
Before approving:
- Test flake in
crates/minimald/src/box_manager.rs:3058-3064(an_ended_actors_slot_is_emptied), the rest of the open bot thread. Inmainloop(box_actor.rs:2021-2027),handle_messagesends therecord()reply before the loop callspublish_host(). On the two-worker runtime the test can wake on that reply andput_host_for_testbefore that publish runs, which then overwrites the test host withNoneand fails the firstis_some(). Installing the host through the actor with a test-only message, or polling until the put survives, would close it. - Nit: new doc comments at
box_actor.rs:5864and:5897say "session actor" / "the session" for the box; AGENTS.md asks new code to say box. - This PR is based on
fix/710-manager-destroy(#2224), so no CI lane has run on it, and that base now conflicts with main. It needs the stack rebased and this PR retargeted tomainso the lanes run before it can merge.

… publishes A listing's attrs probe went through the actor's mailbox, so an actor parked in a long message (a package-graph clone inside ConfigureLoadout, an inline attach) held every `min ls` for the probe's full deadline: 2 s per call through the whole of a stalled activation (710d). The actor now publishes the host it holds to a slot its handle reads, after every message and wherever a host is installed, and empties it when the actor ends. Ported onto main's split box_actor files, on top of #2224's rebase. The ended-actor test puts its host until the put survives the actor's own publishes, which is what made it flaky on a two-worker runtime: the actor replies to a message before the publish that follows it.

Refs gominimal/inbox#1096. Stacked on #2224 (its two commits are the base; this PR adds one).
What
The other half of 710d. With #2224 the 70 s wall is gone, but every
min lsstill paid 2 s per session whose actor was parked: the listing probed each running session's host through the session actor's mailbox, underHOST_PROBE_TIMEOUT, and an actor insideconfigure_loadout's package-graph clone (or an inline attach) answers nothing until it is done. On main the 710d probe had a p50 of 2.0 s for the whole stalled activation. The change (
crates/minimald/src/session.rs, one commit)The actor publishes the host it holds into a slot its handle reads (
HostSlot), refreshed after every message it handles. The listing's probe (SessionHandle::get_attrs) goes to that host directly: still bounded byHOST_PROBE_TIMEOUT, stillNonefor a session without a host or a dead one, but it never waits on the actor. Between messages, and for as long as one parks the actor, the slot holds the host the actor last had, which is the right answer for a listing. The
GetHostAttrsmessage had no caller left and is removed. A test-onlyParkmessage holds an actor for a duration, the shape of a long inline message;a_listing_does_not_wait_on_a_parked_actorparks one for 3 s and assertslistanswers within half a second.Evidence
