fix(mctx): keep task args from running as shell code - #2296
Conversation
Task argument values were spliced into command strings unquoted. In a
single `exec` string a value with spaces shattered into several argv
entries and quotes broke the shlex split; in a `bash` script a value
could terminate the surrounding quoted region and run as shell code.
interpolate_task_strings now picks the value transform per action: exec
single strings get shell-quoted values (each %{name} is exactly one
argument after the split), bash scripts get values escaped for a
double-quoted context. echo, list-form exec, and cmd actions pass values
to their runner directly, without a shell, and stay verbatim.

- Line 704: Update quote_for_shlex and its substitution flow to account for
placeholders already enclosed in quotes in the exec string, so added quoting
does not become literal argument text or alter argument boundaries;
alternatively, reject unsupported quote contexts before substitution. Add a
regression test for an already-quoted placeholder and preserve
one-value-per-placeholder behavior.
- Around line 676-677: Update the Bash handling in the TaskAction::Bash branch
so escape_for_dquote is applied only to placeholders inside double quotes, while
unquoted and single-quoted placeholders preserve their previous behavior. Limit
the safety documentation claim to double-quoted placeholders, and add tests that
define the intended behavior for unquoted and single-quoted values.

… env vars
Replace splice-time quoting with designs that never put a value where a
shell or the word splitter reads it as syntax.
A single exec string is split into argv words with every string value
standing in as an opaque token, then each value fills in its own word,
so the author's quoting around a reference no longer changes the value.
The task becomes a list-form exec and no shell runs it.
A bash script gets ${MIN_ARG_<NAME>} for each string reference, and the
value is bound in the invocation's environment (arrays as _<i> plus
_COUNT). The daemon and mip launch paths now pass Invocation::envs to the
sandbox command.
An enum value is validated against the author's permitted set, so it is
author text and a Nickel expression such as an if on it must see it.
Document that a string arg is an opaque placeholder inside %{...}, and
that numbers and booleans keep their values.

- Around line 682-684: Update the `Shlex` parsing in the `exec` handling flow to
check `had_error` after collecting arguments and return an error for malformed
input. Also return an error when the collected argv is empty, so execution never
proceeds without a program.
- Around line 676-680: Separate the argument values passed through
`task_var_ctx` for `VarCtx::eval_string` from the shell-safe values produced by
`sentinel_arg`, so Nickel expressions see actual string and enum values while
opaque tokens remain for direct `exec` word and bash variable insertion. Keep
tokens intact through `shlex` splitting, and add coverage for conditionals, enum
comparisons, and string functions.

Task argument values were spliced into command strings unquoted: in a
single
execstring a value with spaces shattered into several argventries and quotes broke the shlex split; in a
bashscript a valuecould terminate the quoted region and run as shell code. The argument
supplier (CI, an agent running
min task run -- args) is a separatetrust boundary from the
minimal.tomlauthor, so values are data.every string value standing in as an opaque token (private-use
sentinels), then each value fills in its own word. The task becomes a
list-form exec; no shell runs it. A value lands in exactly one argv
entry whatever it holds and however the author quoted the reference.
Splitting after Nickel evaluation (rather than splitting the raw
template) keeps references like
%{std.string.join " " files}working.${MIN_ARG_<NAME>}and the value is bound in the invocation'senvironment (
Invocation::envs); arrays bindMIN_ARG_<NAME>_<i>plusMIN_ARG_<NAME>_COUNT. Colliding names (a-bvsa_b) are refused.The daemon (
minimaldexec) andmip runlaunch paths now passInvocation::envsthrough viaEnv::invocation_command;Sandbox::runalready did.docs/reference/tasks.mdstates the per-action guarantee, the variablescheme, and the unquoted / single-quoted behaviour in bash.
