fix(minimal): ask only running VMs' daemons to release the hook port - #2245
norrietaylor merged 5 commits into
Conversation
The finalize-install script's --control args named every VM host daemon the state dir ever enumerated, running or not: a stopped VM's leftover control socket was rendered as a release target. Filter the enumeration to the VMs whose bridge socket still exists — the same running-VM signal the listing uses — since a stopped VM cannot hold the hook port. - Line 104: Update running_vm_controls to use Client::probe for each VM’s SSH
bridge instead of filtering on vm.sock.exists(), so stale socket files for
stopped VMs are excluded. Add a test that binds and drops a bridge listener
while leaving its socket file in place, and verify the VM is not included.

…ease A stopped VM's ssh.sock and control.sock stay on disk after its daemon exits, so a file's presence is not liveness. Keep a control socket only when a connection to it succeeds at render time, and pin the stale case (socket files with no listener) in the tests.

min finalize-install --show --scriptrendered a--control "<socket>"argument for every named VM the provider directory knows about, including
VMs that are not running. A stopped VM cannot hold the host hook port, so
asking its (dead) daemon to release it is wrong output for a generated
install script.
The release-argument list now keeps a VM only when a connection to its
daemon's control socket succeeds at render time
(
tokio::net::UnixStream::connect, bounded by the client's probetimeout so a daemon that does not accept cannot stall the render). A missing socket or a refused
connection means the daemon is not running, so the VM is skipped. A file
check is not enough: minvmd removes a stale
ssh.sockonly before its nextbind, never on stop or exit, so a stopped VM that ran keeps its socket files.
The probe connects and closes without sending a request, which the control
server treats as a client that left.
enumerate_vm_socketsitself isunchanged: every other consumer still sees the full enumeration. The probe
runs at render time: a VM started after the install step runs publishes to
the installed service, while one started between the render and the run is
not in the list, so if its daemon holds the hook port the service start
reports that and prints the remedy (a brand-new VM had the same gap
before). Listing stopped VMs instead would make the release fail on their
unreachable control sockets.
Verification
cargo fmt --all --checkandjust clippy: pass (Linux)ssh.sockandcontrol.sockremain as files with no listener behind them is skipped, while a running VM with a live listener on
control.sockis kept. Thesame holds for a stopped default VM next to a running named one.
tests::legacy_network_spellings_parse_with_hintwas reported failing onclean
main(pre-existing, unrelated to this change).
