The daemon's attach path collapsed both ways a mint can fail into one
message: whether the host's loop ended or wedged in the window between
launch and attach, the client was told it "exited before its channel
could attach". A wedged host is alive — reading it as dead invites
minting a second host over a healthy, busy one. Split the mapping in
mint_session_host: a closed mailbox keeps the spawn failure, while a
timed-out attach probe maps to the SessionBusy refusal the re-attach
path already uses for the same wedged case (informed by #383).

Verification

  • cargo fmt --all --check — clean
  • cargo clippy --workspace --all-targets --locked -- -D warnings — clean
  • cargo test -p minimald — session::tests 119/119 pass, including
the two new proofs: a mint whose host dies before attach reports a
spawn failure, and a mint whose host wedges reports busy instead of
    death (the wedged refusal also asserts the exited message is absent);
    the full-suite run shows 11 pre-existing log-capture races in
net::switch/rpc/connection that fail identically on the unpatched
    tree and pass in isolation

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes
    • Session attachment failures now report the appropriate outcome: an error if the host exits before attachment, or a busy/retry message if it is unresponsive.
    • Retrying attachment to an unresponsive host reuses the same host instead of launching another. Successful session attachment is unchanged.

mint_session_host collapsed both HostAttachError arms into one
SpawnFailed, so a wedged-but-alive host was reported as having
"exited before its channel could attach". Split the mapping:
Closed keeps the spawn failure, Timeout maps to SessionBusy,
matching the re-attach path's refusal of the same wedged case.

Prove both arms through a test seam that puts a freshly launched
host into each state before the mint's own attach runs.

📝 Walkthrough

Walkthrough

Session host minting now distinguishes a host that exits before channel attachment from a live host whose attachment times out. A test-only seam simulates both conditions. Regression tests verify the client errors and confirm that a retry uses the retained wedged host.

Changes

Host Attachment

Layer / File(s) Summary
Pre-attach failure injection
crates/minimald/src/session.rs
A test-only, session-keyed seam can terminate a launched host or make it wedge before attachment. Unseeded launches pass through unchanged.
Attach outcomes and retry behavior
crates/minimald/src/session.rs, crates/minimald/src/session/tests.rs
Minting maps a closed host to SpawnFailed and an attachment timeout to SessionBusy. It retains the launched host after a timeout. Tests verify both errors and confirm that a retry reaches the same wedged host.

Merge Risk: ⚪ Minimal · up to 7cf44

A wedged session host is now reported as busy, and a retry reuses that host instead of starting another one. No remaining merge-blocking risk was found.

A first attach that timed out returned SessionBusy before the launched
host reached the slot, so its JoinHandle was dropped (detaching a live
loop) and a retry minted a second host over it. Store the host before
refusing; the retry now takes the re-attach path.

Approved: no findings at 7cf44dc96239.

Nothing to do.

Clobber: none: git log on session.rs shows the PR's own commits (b8c76d29, e4849381, 448708f0), no recent fix reverted.

The HostWedged seam now ends the real host's loop before swapping in
the wedged stand-in, so the stored (handle, task) pair describes one
host and nothing of the real loop outlives the swap. Also drop the
stale "stored only once it is bound" clause from the mint's attach
comment.
