AGENTS.md stated conventions for code, tests, and inventory counts, but had no rules for the text the tools print to a person. That text is part of the product, and nothing in the contract said how to write, place, specify, or review it.

This adds a ### User-facing text subsection under ## Conventions and hard rules, between the conventions list and ### Pre-PR verification. No other file changes.

The section has four parts:

  • One test every message passes. It states the situation or gives one action. The bullets cover the words to use (product terms the user sees, never process or crate names), runnable commands with their arguments shown (a placeholder stands in for a secret, which prints only where the command itself just issued it), claims the code can prove, conditions with several outcomes, one sentence per fact, labels beside pass and fail marks, refusals, one name per thing, and logged warnings.
  • No new message before the box shell on a healthy start. The claim is scoped to an interactive attach, where the shell's first paint replaces what was printed. A command that does not attach, or that runs without a terminal, prints lines that stay. A healthy start is one that reaches the shell with nothing for the user to do, and a value printed on stdout for a script is output, not a message. The rule governs new messages: a line that a spec requires at session start stays until that spec changes. A new line before the shell is a prompt, only for a decision the command cannot continue without. Without a terminal, or with --no-input, a new prompt is an immediate error that names the flag that answers it. Anything else worth telling the user goes to a surface that stays, such as min ls, min session policy, min dash or a notice inside the box. A detail for whoever debugs the start goes to the log.
  • Specifying or planning a message. Exact text, condition and surface; why it is true; the tests that pin it; and, where a spec pins the old text, the spec change or an issue linked from the PR.
  • Reviewing a message. Read it as a user who has never seen the design.

Verification

docs-only: language gate skipped — AGENTS.md

  • git diff against main is one file, AGENTS.md, a single insertion hunk between the conventions list and ### Pre-PR verification; no pre-existing line changes
  • just lint-prose AGENTS.md reports no alert on the added lines. The alerts it still reports are all on lines this PR does not touch, and the count there is the same as on main
  • min ls, min dash, and min session policy are real commands (crates/minimal/src/cli.rs: Ls, Dash, SessionCommand::Policy); --no-input is the global flag in the same file
  • the first-paint claim: on an interactive attach the daemon writes the session screen with state_formatted() (crates/minimald/src/session_host.rs), which starts with a home-and-erase of the display
  • the section states no inventory count and has no links

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Documentation
    • Added guidance for clear user-facing messages, including stating the situation or giving an actionable instruction, using user-visible terms, and showing known command arguments.
    • Clarified how to distinguish user messages from logs and script output, avoid unverified remedies, and separate distinct facts.
    • Documented when messages and prompts may appear, how prompts behave without input, and requirements for planning and reviewing message changes, including recording exact text, display conditions, surfaces, supporting code paths, and tests.

Add a subsection to the conventions covering text printed for a
person: the one test a message must pass, what belongs on a lasting
surface instead of before the box shell, and what specifying,
changing, and reviewing a message requires.

A rabbit reads the message rules,
And checks each prompt before it calls.
Clear words hop from line to line,
Facts stay grounded, labels shine.

@norrietaylor norrietaylor changed the title fix: add the rules for user-facing text to AGENTS.md docs(agents): add the rules for user-facing text Oct 12, 2026
Scope the rule against printing before the box shell to new messages
on an interactive attach. A line that a spec requires at session start
stays until that spec changes, so the rule no longer contradicts the
lines the box-networking spec requires today.

State the decided prompt behaviour: a prompt is for a decision the
command cannot continue without, and without a terminal or with
--no-input it is an immediate error that names the flag.

Add the rules for arguments in commands, labels beside pass and fail
marks, conditions with several outcomes, and separate facts. Say which
product terms are not internal components, and where to record a spec
line that must follow.

Reword the phrases the prose rules rejected. just lint-prose AGENTS.md
now reports no alert on the lines of this section.

Approved: no findings at 2d18fa98db78.

Nothing to do.

Clobber: none: git log --oneline -15 -- AGENTS.md shows the three most recent commits are this PR's own fixups (secret-placeholder rule, scoped pre-shell rule), no other recent work reverted.

Add a secrets clause to the argument rule, scope the prompt bullets to new
lines and new prompts, say which surface is for the user and which is the
log, define a healthy start and stdout output, and say a spec pins text.
