Project-level [session] patches with repo-relative sources (e.g.
source = "config/myrc") abort activation with NotAbsolute because
gate_pending_patches expands daemon-sent patches with only a HOME
anchor.

Add a project_root anchor to Anchors (expansion.rs), derive it
per-item from Source::Project in expand_patch_sources (compose.rs),
and join still-relative patterns onto it before the absolute check.
.. rejection and NotAbsolute for loadout/policy patterns are
preserved.

Changes

  • expansion.rs: Add project_root field to Anchors with
    with_project_root() builder. In expand_pattern, when a pattern
    is still relative after normalization and a project root is
    available, join onto it before the absoluteness check. Extract
    finish_expand helper for the shared plain-directory rewrite.
  • compose.rs: Derive project_root per item in
    expand_patch_sources from Source::Project { path } and chain
    .with_project_root() onto the existing anchors.

Verification

  • 65 expansion unit tests pass (7 new)
  • 4 new compose tests for project-root anchoring
  • Full sessions test suite: 584 passed, 0 failed
  • cargo fmt --all --check clean
  • Pre-existing clippy warnings in crates/args (unrelated)

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes
    • Relative paths in project patch sources now resolve from the project directory. Absolute paths remain unchanged, and paths that traverse to a parent directory are still rejected.
    • Relative paths from user loadouts remain unanchored and require an absolute path. Other relative sources without a project directory also continue to require an absolute path.

📝 Walkthrough

Walkthrough

Project-declared relative patch sources now resolve against their project root. Absolute sources remain unchanged, and parent traversal remains rejected. Other provenance types do not receive a project-root anchor.

Changes

Project patch expansion

Layer / File(s) Summary
Project-root anchored expansion
crates/sessions/src/core/expansion.rs
Anchors now accepts an optional project root. Relative patterns use that root before the absolute-path check. Tests cover trailing separators, absolute paths, parent traversal, directory rewriting, and tilde expansion.
Project source wiring
crates/sessions/src/core/compose.rs, crates/sessions/src/core/compose/tests.rs
expand_patch_sources supplies a project root for project provenance. Tests cover relative project sources, absolute project sources, parent traversal, and unanchored loadout sources.

A rabbit checks the paths at dawn,
A project root now guides them on.
A straight path stays just as it came,
While parent steps still fail the game.
The loadout keeps its old route clear,
And hops away with carrots near.

- Around line 399-416: Escape glob metacharacters in the project root before
constructing `joined` in the `anchors.project_root` branch of the expansion
flow. Use the escaped root for both `joined` path formats, while keeping
`unescaped_joined` based on the raw root.
- Around line 399-416: Validate anchors.project_root as absolute before joining
it with normalized paths when require_absolute is true; reject relative roots
through the existing error path so finish_expand cannot produce a relative
pattern. Preserve the existing joining and glob-escaping behavior for absolute
roots.

clippy::needless_pass_by_value rejected the owned String; the plain-directory check only reads it.
@norrietaylor norrietaylor changed the title fix: fix(sessions): anchor project patch sources at project root fix(sessions): anchor project patch sources at project root Oct 4, 2026
normalize_path restored the trailing slash onto an empty component list,
so a relative `./` source became the absolute host root `/` and skipped
the project-root join. Restore it only when components remain, and cover
`./`, `.//` and `.`.

Also document repo-relative project patch sources in the dev-shell guide
(lint-prose clean) and correct the Source::Project doc comment: the path
is the project root directory, which the new anchor relies on.

Approved: no findings at 52921212ac94.

Nothing to do.

Clobber: none: git log on both touched crates shows only this PR's own fix commits (including the already-resolved CodeRabbit thread about glob escaping and the relative-root guard) on top of the base; no unrelated fix is reverted.
