fix(minimald,sandbox2): bound the proxy upstream dial and write box /etc/hosts atomically - #1828
Conversation
…etc/hosts atomically The hostname proxy upstream dial had no timeout, so a SYN to a dead lease hung the client for the kernel retry period (~2 minutes) before returning 502. Wrap TcpStream::connect in tokio::time::timeout (5 s) and return 504 Gateway Timeout on expiry, logging the upstream address. write_hosts read /etc/hosts, removed it, then wrote it — two concurrent new_container calls over one rootfs could interleave and lose the localhost lines. Write to a temp file in the same directory and rename into place, matching the atomic pattern already used by write_closure_report. No merge-blocking risk was found. The new test depends on kernel accept-queue behavior, so it could be flaky on some hosts. 🚥 Pre-merge checks | ✅ 5✅ Passed checks (5 passed)

…n temp Concurrent write_hosts calls in one process shared the hosts.tmp<pid> path, so one rename could fail with ENOENT, and two read-merge-rename passes could drop each other's entries. A process-wide lock now covers the whole read-merge-rename, each call stages under a unique temp name, and a failed write removes its temp.
Drive handle_connection_io against a loopback listener whose accept queue is full, under a paused clock, and assert the client gets 504 Gateway Timeout once UPSTREAM_DIAL_TIMEOUT passes. Document the constant like its neighbours.

1243-1306: 📐 Maintainability & Code Quality | 🔵 Trivial | 💤 Low valueThe test depends on the kernel's loopback accept-queue behavior and can fail or hang on some hosts.
The test fills the accept queue with up to 64 blocking
connect_timeoutcalls, 8000 each up to 250 ms. This depends on Linux dropping SYNs once the queue is full.
- If
net.ipv4.tcp_syncookiesor backlog rounding admits more connections, theheld.len() < 64assertion fails.- In a container or sandbox, the test fails instead of skipping.
- Each blocking call stalls a tokio worker.
start_pauseduses a current-thread runtime, so the fill loop is fine. It does not exercise the paused clock. The risk is a flaky test, not a product defect. Consider a deterministic alternative, such as a
TcpStream::connectfuture that never resolves, if the code is refactored to accept a dialer. If not, keep the test but document the dependency on kernel behavior.🤖 Prompt for AI Agents

Two robustness defects in the hostname proxy and the sandbox rootfs setup.
The proxy's upstream dial (
TcpStream::connect) was unbounded: a SYN to a dead lease hung the client for the kernel's retry period (~2 minutes) before a 502. The dial is now wrapped intokio::time::timeout(5 s), returning 504 Gateway Timeout on expiry and logging the upstream address.write_hostsread/etc/hosts, removed it, then wrote it, so two concurrentnew_containercalls over one rootfs could interleave and permanently lose thelocalhostlines. It now writes to a temp file in the same directory and renames it into place, matching the atomic pattern already used bywrite_closure_report.Verification
