Summary

A loadout or [session.vars] entry setting PATH = "/opt/bin:$PATH" was applied literally, so the session PATH became the string /opt/bin:$PATH and every exec failed with os error 2.

In Config::command_env (crates/sandbox2/src/config.rs) the layout default PATH is set first and composed env_vars are applied last, replacing it verbatim. This change substitutes the layout default PATH for a $PATH/${PATH} reference in a composed PATH value; every other variable stays literal.

Changes

  • crates/sandbox2/src/config.rs: expand $PATH/${PATH} in a composed PATH against the layout default; add a unit test covering $PATH, ${PATH}, a PATH without a reference, and a non-PATH var containing $PATH.
  • docs/reference/loadouts.md: document the PATH self-reference exception in the [vars] section.

Verification

  • cargo fmt --all --check — passed
  • cargo build --workspace --locked — passed
  • cargo test -p sandbox2 --locked — 48 passed, 0 failed (includes the new test)
  • cargo clippy -p sandbox2 --locked --no-deps -- -D warnings — passed

Note: cargo clippy --workspace --locked -- -D warnings fails in the untouched crates/args/src/lib.rs because the sandbox resolves cargo to the stable (1.99.0) toolchain rather than the repo-pinned 1.97.0; 1.99.0's needless_borrows_for_generic_args lint does not exist in 1.97.0. This is pre-existing toolchain drift, unrelated to this change.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Configured PATH values can include $PATH or ${PATH} to incorporate the session’s default path. Values without either reference remain unchanged. $PATH followed by a letter, digit, or underscore is treated literally, and references to other configured variables remain unchanged.
  • Documentation
    • Updated loadout guidance to explain how PATH references are expanded and how values without those references and literal values for other variables are handled.

A loadout or [session.vars] entry setting PATH = "/opt/bin:$PATH" was
applied literally, so the session PATH became the string /opt/bin:$PATH
and every exec failed with os error 2.

In Config::command_env the layout default PATH is set first and composed
env_vars are applied last, replacing it verbatim. When the composed PATH
value contains $PATH or ${PATH}, substitute the layout default PATH for
that reference; every other variable stays literal.

Add a unit test covering $PATH, ${PATH}, a PATH without a reference, and
a non-PATH var containing $PATH. Document the PATH exception in the
[vars] section of docs/reference/loadouts.md.

📝 Walkthrough

Walkthrough

Configured PATH values now expand $PATH and ${PATH} against the active layout’s default PATH. A $PATH followed by an ASCII letter, digit, or underscore remains literal. Values without a PATH reference and other configured variables remain unchanged.

PATH Variable Expansion

Layer / File(s) Summary
PATH expansion behavior
crates/sandbox2/src/config.rs, docs/reference/loadouts.md
The command environment captures the layout-specific default PATH and expands valid $PATH and ${PATH} references in configured PATH values. Tests cover both reference forms, literal values, and longer variable names. The documentation describes these rules.

continue a variable name, while preserving `${PATH}` expansion and leaving
longer variable references literal.

Clears clippy::unnecessary_map_or, which failed the clippy lane, and
splits the loadouts PATH bullet so it adds no prose-lint alerts.

Approved: no findings at 9ec06c703026.

Nothing to do.

Clobber: none: git log -- crates/sandbox2/src/config.rs shows the touched lines are all this PR's own commits (a9c9437 → 868b67e); nothing from a prior merge is reverted.
