The state volume trim ran only after a cache clean, which happens every
6 hours. Freed extents therefore sat in the backing image for hours
before being returned to the host via FITRIM. This adds a standalone
trim timer that fires every 5 minutes, independent of the clean, and
resets it whenever a clean-driven trim runs so the two do not fire back
to back.

Change

  • Add TRIM_INTERVAL constant (5 minutes)
  • Add a second next_trim timer in mainloop with a sleep_until arm
    that calls trim_state_volume_if_mounted independently
  • Reset next_trim after every clean-driven trim to avoid redundant
    back-to-back trims
  • Add a paused-clock unit test verifying the trim timer fires
    independently of the clean timer

Verification

  • cargo fmt --all --check: clean
  • cargo clippy --workspace --locked --all-targets: clean
  • cargo build --workspace --locked: clean
  • cargo test --locked -p minimald maintenance::tests: 4/4 pass
    (including the new trim_timer_fires_independently_of_clean)

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes
    • State-volume trimming now runs every five minutes, even when no cache clean is scheduled. Requested and periodic cache cleans continue to trim afterward.

The new test may pass without exercising standalone trimming. The change is mergeable with this bounded coverage gap, though a regression in the new timer could go undetected.

Assert the standalone trim arm, not actor liveness.

STARTUP_DELAY equals TRIM_INTERVAL. When both timers are ready, the biased select reaches the startup-clean arm first. That arm trims and resets next_trim, so this five-minute advance can run a clean-driven trim without running the standalone arm. Keeping the handle does not show which arm ran.

Await a clean, then advance the reset TRIM_INTERVAL and assert a test-only notification or counter from the standalone arm.

The previous test advanced the paused clock by TRIM_INTERVAL, which
equals STARTUP_DELAY, so the biased select ran the startup clean and the
test asserted nothing. It also marked the state volume mounted, sending a
real FITRIM at the test host's filesystem. Count the standalone arm's
firings through a test-only counter and require two before the next clean
is due, with the volume left unmounted. Update the docs that still
described the trim as following only a clean.

Addressed CodeRabbit's nitpick (assert the standalone trim arm, not actor liveness) in a3c236c: the test now counts the standalone arm's firings through a test-only counter and requires two before the next clean is due, after the startup clean has reset the trim deadline. It also leaves the state volume unmounted, so no real FITRIM is issued against the test host.

Log a trim that discarded nothing at debug, since most standalone trims
find no new free blocks. Update the trim_state_volume doc for the
standalone TRIM_INTERVAL arm, and note on trim_state_volume_if_mounted
that an overlap with the shutdown quiesce is now routine and covered by
its lazy detach.

Approved: no findings at 89689abd3d8b.

Nothing to do.

Clobber: none: git log on both files shows only this PR's own commits and prior forward fixes (#1744, #1831); no recent fix is reverted.
