fix(minimald): kill silent child when SSH client disconnects - #1863
Conversation
ExecTask::run used rs.make_reader(), which reduces the SSH channel read half to a bare AsyncRead and only surfaces ChannelMsg::Data and ChannelMsg::Eof. ChannelMsg::Close and None (sender dropped) were lost, so a lost client looked like stdin EOF and a silent child (sleep, quiet build) kept running indefinitely. Drive rs.wait() directly in a pump task, forward Data to a pipe, and signal client loss via a tokio::sync::watch. bridge_one gains a client_lost.changed() branch that reuses the existing kill path. It signals client loss independently of stdin EOF. The bridge uses that signal to kill the active child, including when a write to child stdin is blocked, and to stop the process sequence. A rabbit taps the channel stream Comment |
The pump stopped at ChannelMsg::Eof and dropped the client-loss sender. min task run from a terminal half-closes stdin first, so a later disconnect went unseen and the silent child kept running; and with the sender gone, watch::Receiver::changed() resolved Err on every poll, spinning the bridge loop for the life of the child. Close the child's stdin on Eof but keep reading the channel until Close or the end of the stream, and disable the select branch once the watch closes. The pump is now a function over a ChannelMsg stream so it is unit-tested directly.

- Around line 902-910: Update pump_channel_input so handling ChannelMsg::Data
never blocks polling msgs on child-stdin writes; use a bounded queue with a
dedicated writer or equivalent, and apply an explicit drop-input or close-stdin
policy when full. Keep processing Close and None while writes are pending, and
preserve Eof closing stdin without stopping disconnect monitoring.
- Around line 1166-1180: In bridge_one, race the child-stdin cs.write_all
against client_lost.changed() so a pending write cannot block detection of SSH
client loss; if loss wins, follow the existing child-kill path. Keep this
separate from changes to pump_channel_input’s pipe write.

A child that stops reading stdin parks bridge_one in write_all inside the select arm, where client_lost.changed() is never polled. Race the write against client_lost.wait_for so a disconnect still reaches the kill path.
…fail pipe(2) can fail with EMFILE/ENFILE, and the expect() panicked the exec task before exit_status/close ran (and, for an owned run box, before end_run_box). tokio::io::duplex needs no fds, gives the bridge EOF when the pump's half drops, and keeps the same 64 KiB bound.

…test With both output writers dropped, the stdin, stdout and stderr EOF branches could all win the unbiased select! before client loss, ending the loop without a kill and leaving the bridge parked in wait() (about one run in four). A real silent child keeps its stdio open; model that.

The client-loss watch fires once, and the first step consumes it. A child that then exits 0 let the loop start the next child, which never saw the disconnect and could run silently forever. Break on the latched value.

…nects A child that closes stdout and stderr but keeps running ends the bridge's I/O loop, and the final wait then ignored client loss, so a disconnected client left it running. Race that wait against the client-loss watch and kill the child if loss wins.

The bound watch::Ref lived across the reaping await and made the bridge future !Send. Reduce it to a bool inside the select branch.

Problem
When a
min session execclient disconnects, minimald only kills the spawned command when it next tries to write output. A silent command (sleep, quiet build) keeps running indefinitely.Root cause
ExecTask::runusedrs.make_reader(), which reduces the SSH channel read half to a bareAsyncReadand only surfacesChannelMsg::DataandChannelMsg::Eof.ChannelMsg::CloseandNone(sender dropped) — the signals that the SSH client is gone — were lost, so a lost client looked like a normal stdin EOF.Change
rs.wait()directly in a pump task, forwardingChannelMsg::Datato a pipe and signalling client loss viatokio::sync::watchonChannelMsg::Close/None.bridgeintobridge_one, adding aclient_lost.changed()branch that reuses the existing kill path.ChannelMsg::Eof(normal stdin close) does NOT signal client loss.Follow-up commits
Eofnow only closes the child's stdin; the pump keeps reading the channel, becausemin task runfrom a terminal half-closes stdin immediately and the disconnect almost always arrives after it.bridge_oneclears aclient_watch_openguard whenclient_lost.changed()returnsErr, so a sender dropped without signalling cannot spin theselect!loop.client_lost, so the disconnect still reaches the kill path.tokio::io::duplex(64 KiB)instead ofpipe(2), so fd exhaustion can no longer panic the exec task before it sends the exit status and closes the channel.Known remaining gap
A child that never reads stdin, fed more than about 136 KiB of piped input, still misses the disconnect, the same as on main: russh awaits a bounded channel send, so once stdin backs up the
Closeis never delivered to the pump.Verification
