ci(verify): the agent runtime's gate runs clippy and the touched crates - #1570
Conversation
Canary 1569 on this repository needed two extra coder jobs, and this gate could have caught both. Round 1 was `clippy` red and the fix was deleting a redundant `.into()` — 29 minutes of a second job for two words, because `[tasks.clippy]` sat beside this block and the gate did not run it. Round 2 was `unit` red: a box spec accepted ingress on HostNet, which the task's three `-p sessions` lines missed because the plan format requires each `test:` line to name a single test, and the crate's own suite is what found it. Clippy was left out for a reason that no longer holds: the runtime ran this task cold, and a cold `cargo clippy --all-targets` does not fit the 10-minute probe budget. Since gominimal/agent-runtime#122 the task is wrapped with the job's shared `CARGO_TARGET_DIR` and sccache, so it starts from the graph the `test:` lines just built. The crate suites are scoped, not the workspace's: `MINIMAL_CHANGED_PATHS` is what the runtime hands this task, and the crates are read off it, so the gate is the size of the work. No paths means no scope, and clippy still runs. Both lines mirror a CI job exactly. CI is the gate that decides, and a fast signal that disagrees with it costs a whole job.

The block above it argued for the change instead of describing it — which canary needed which round, and what a cold clippy used to cost. That belongs in the pull request, not in a config a reader opens to find out what the gate runs.
It reads MINIMAL_CHANGED_PATHS, which only the agent runtime sets, so it is not the generic "does this tree pass" that `verify` promises — a person running it at a terminal would get a quietly narrower gate with nothing saying why. gominimal/agent-runtime#123 prefers `agent-verify` over `verify`, so the scoped gate takes the specific name. `verify` stays for people: the same rustfmt and clippy over the whole workspace, with no crate scoping, because nothing sets that variable at a terminal and a gate that silently narrows itself is worse than one that says what it covers.

Verdict COMMENT — APPROVE withheld: 1 unresolved thread — coderabbitai[bot] .minimal/minimal.toml:125. APPROVE: all personas completed and nothing survives above severity 'nit' (0 finding(s) kept).
Scope matches the stated intent exactly: one config file, .minimal/minimal.toml, which adds clippy and the touched-crates nextest run to the agent gate, renames that gate from verify to agent-verify, and leaves verify for people as rustfmt+clippy over the whole workspace. 35 insertions, 7 deletions, all in the task blocks. Clobber none: git log on the file shows the change builds on the prior verify block (7b6f6d2) and does not revert any recent work. Correctness checked build-free by executing the extraction pipeline: the sed -n 's|^crates/\([^/][^/]*\)/.*|\1|p' read of MINIMAL_CHANGED_PATHS correctly yields the five unique crate names from the canary's paths, the empty/unset variable correctly produces no suites while clippy still runs (the if [ -n "$crates" ] guard holds), non-crates/ paths contribute nothing, and all 31 directories under crates/ are real workspace members, so cargo nextest run -p <name> cannot hit an unknown package. The set -e ordering (fmt-check, then clippy, then scoped nextest) fails fast as intended. No leftover agent narration: the added comments describe what each task runs, and commit e22b9b7 already pruned the narrative block. No secrets (gitleaks clean); the diff touches no dependencies. Not checked (needs a build/run I am not permitted): whether the whole-workspace cargo clippy --all-targets plus the scoped nextest actually fit the runtime's 10-minute probeWallClockSeconds once warm, and whether agent-runtime#123's agent-verify name wiring matches this file's — both of which the PR body itself flags under "Draft on purpose" and "What to watch", so no finding is raised for them. The change is coherent and well-documented.

Verification log
1. run the crate-extraction pipeline against the canary's claimed paths — exit 0 · self-reported
MINIMAL_CHANGED_PATHS = 5 crates/ paths + 1 docs path -> crates = minimal, minimald, minimal-tui, sessions, switch; docs path ignored. Matches the PR's claimed output exactly.
2. run the extraction with MINIMAL_CHANGED_PATHS unset — exit 0 · self-reported
crates is empty and the

3. ls crates/ to confirm every first-level dir is a workspace member — exit 0 · self-reported
All 31 dirs under crates/ are the member crates in repomap;
cargo nextest run -p <name>cannot reference a non-package, so the sed-extracted names are always valid.

CodeRabbit flagged that agent-verify and verify could pass on a stale Cargo.lock that CI's locked checks reject: ci.yml's clippy job runs `cargo clippy --workspace --all-targets --locked`, and core-tests/action.yml runs `cargo fetch --locked` before `cargo nextest run --workspace --locked`. Add --locked to both clippy calls and to the nextest call in agent-verify and verify so the gate stays predictive of CI. Scope matches the title: it splits the runtime gate into [tasks.agent-verify] (fmt check + clippy + nextest run over the crates named by MINIMAL_CHANGED_PATHS) and keeps [tasks.verify] for humans (now fmt check + whole-workspace clippy). Two documented decisions, both coherent: nextest is scoped to touched crates while clippy stays whole-workspace because it starts warm from the shared CARGO_TARGET_DIR + sccache (agent-runtime#122); and a person's verify is deliberately unscoped because nothing sets MINIMAL_CHANGED_PATHS at a terminal.
Clobber none. git log -- .minimal/minimal.toml shows the PR is a staged evolution of #1542 (which introduced fmt/verify); nothing reverts recent work.
Correctness I checked the extraction logic against the workspace rather than taking it on trust: every crates/<name>/ directory carries a Cargo.toml and every package name equals its directory name, so sed 's|^crates/\([^/][^/]*\)/.*|\1|' feeding cargo nextest run --locked -p <name> always resolves. The empty-MINIMAL_CHANGED_PATHS branch is guarde
8000
d (if [ -n "$crates" ]) so nextest is skipped while fmt/clippy still run, matching the comment. No secret material, no dependency moves, and the shell additions read clean under set -e. The prior --locked concern is already resolved in-thread by the author (481989f).
Not checked the agent-runtime repo itself: whether MINIMAL_CHANGED_PATHS is handed as relative crates/... paths (my analysis assumes so; the author verified it against canary 1569) and whether the runtime now recognizes the agent-verify task name. Both are the dependency the PR marks itself as a draft on, so this is expected, not a gap. Confirmed I could not build/run nextest here, so nothing about a live run is asserted.

Verification log
1. diff directory vs package names across crates/* — self-reported
Every crates// dir has a Cargo.toml whose package name equals the directory name; no mismatch, so -p always resolves to a real package.
2. git log --oneline -8 -- .minimal/minimal.toml — exit 0 · self-reported
PR builds on #1542's fmt/verify introduction; four prior commits (c796c70..481989f) are the same PR's revisions. No recent fix reverted.
3. sed extraction trace: crates/sessions/src/lib.rs -> sessions — self-reported
Traced the sed substitution by hand for touched-crate paths and for the empty/absent-MINIMAL_CHANGED_PATHS case; the guard and dedup behave as documented.
4. read .review/threads.json — exit 0 · self-reported
The --locked concern is resolved by the author (481989f); not re-raised.

Why
Canary #1569 on this repository, 2026-09-20: one coder job produced the PR, and then two more were spent on revise rounds. Neither was triggered by a reviewer — no review job ran at all. Both bot comments say "on a failed check suite".

The task had threetest:lines in-p sessionsand all passed. The plan format requires each line to end in a single test name, so a task's lines can never catch a regression in a test it did not name. A person runningmin task run verifyat a terminal would get the same name doing something quietly narrower, with nothing saying why — so the scoped gate takes the specific name (agent-runtime#123 prefersagent-verifyoververify), and the plain one runs rustfmt and clippy over the whole workspace with no scoping.What the gate runs
