refactor: return errors instead of panicking on untrusted input - #1560
Conversation
The OCI spec builders already return Result convertible into op::Error, so building a config no longer panics on a builder rejection.
Remote-cache GCS client construction, repo and state path UTF-8 checks, and the package fetch task now return Error::Other with context instead of panicking.
…king Non-UTF-8 export names, unparseable ELF/PE data, unreadable file types, and non-UTF-8 nickel file names now surface as check errors. All are reachable from files on disk, not internal invariants.
A non-UTF-8 bound-dir cwd and a failed program existence check now return Error::IO rather than panicking.
A failed checkout tempdir and a non-UTF-8 relative directory now return the crate's IO / InvalidPath errors instead of panicking.

Scope matches the title: ~35 unwrap()s on externally-influenced inputs across the six files become error returns, each reusing an existing variant/From impl (checkouts::Error::InvalidPath + its From<io::Error>, check::Error::IO/Other, sandbox2::Error::IO, op::Error's pre-existing From<oci_spec::OciSpecError>, mctx's RemoteError::Config). The rewritten lib_symbols set construction and the let-else file-name conversions are behavior-preserving apart from panic→error; the 'Left alone' exclusions (planner invariants, store.rs liveness expects, mutex locks, regex constants, tests) hold for the sites I sampled. Clobber none: git log on all six files back to base shows only this PR's five commits. Correctness: the substantive point is that the sweep stops short of the same unwrap class it fixes, inside the same files it hardens — the identical file_type().unwrap() / non-UTF-8 to_str().unwrap() pattern still stands in stack_check_futures, package_check_futures, check/src/stack.rs and check/src/naming.rs, and the exact expression this PR converts in Sandbox::new_container still unwraps in Config::command_cwd. Not checked (needs a build): everything compile-shaped. In particular image_index.to_string()? rests on oci-spec's fallible inherent to_string (the pre-PR .unwrap() implies a Result) and its error having a From into op::Error; From<oci_spec::OciSpecError> predates this PR (crates/op/src/error.rs last touched in 1f3a262), but the crate sources are not vendored here so I could not confirm the concrete error type. std::fs::DirEntry::path() returning PathBuf and Sandbox::rootfs() returning PathBuf do line up with both crates' Error::IO(&'static str, PathBuf, io::Error) fields. No secrets in the added lines; no manifest/lockfile changes, so no dependency review needed.
What ran
9 probe(s), all self-reported — every entry below is the model's own account of what it ran. None of it is host-attested, so none of it can gate a blocking verdict.
Verification log
1. rg -n "to_str\(\)\.unwrap|file_type\(\)\.unwrap" crates/check/src — exit 0 · self-reported
Leftover same-class sites in the check crate: lib.rs:454, 493, 505, 522, 721; stack.rs:31; naming.rs:248. The diff converted only the three FileBasedChecker loops (lib.rs:811-826, 930-945, 1122-1137).
2. rg -n "bound_dir_sandbox_cwd" crates/sandbox2/src — exit 0 · self-reported
Three uses of the value. lib.rs:625 is converted by this PR (to_str -> ok_or_else); lib.rs:252 only joins it; config.rs:245 (Config::command_cwd) still does bound_dir_sandbox_cwd().to_str().unwrap().
3. rg -n "fn repo_dir|repo_dir_override\(\)\.as_ref" crates/mctx/src/lib.rs — exit 0 · self-reported
Context::repo_dir (lib.rs:492-496) ends in repo_dir_override().as_ref().unwrap(); mfile::File::repo_path returns None when layout is None (mfile/src/lib.rs:1192-1198), so the wd-None arm of make_env_with_network can panic on the same mfile-not-on-disk condition the new state_key error now reports.
4. git show cb384e31:crates/mctx/src/lib.rs | sed -n '1024,1040p' — exit 0 · self-reported
The two-arm RemoteError mapping and its explanatory comment (rcache::Error's Display Debug-formats itself) pre-exist at download_if_available; the PR copied the mapping into build_graph_with_cancel without the comment.
5. git log --oneline -8 -- crates/check/src/lib.rs crates/mctx/src/lib.rs crates/sandbox2/src/lib.rs crates/op/src/oci_image.rs crates/checkouts/src/lib.rs crates/check/src/outputs.rs — exit 0 · self-reported
Since base cb384e3 only this PR's five commits touch these files; no recent fix reverted, so no clobber.
6. git log -1 --format=%h -- crates/op/src/error.rs; rg -n "From<oci_spec" crates/op/src/error.rs — exit 0 · self-reported
From<oci_spec::OciSpecError> exists and predates the PR (error.rs last touched in 1f3a262), so the new cb.build()? / image_index.to_string()? reuse existing From impls. The concrete to_string error type is unconfirmed: oci-spec sources are not vendored in the sandbox.
7. rg -n "pub enum Error|InvalidPath|impl From<std::io::Error> for Error" crates/checkouts/src/error.rs — exit 0 · self-reported
Error::InvalidPath and Fromio::Error both exist in checkouts, so tempdir_in(...)? and ok_or(Error::InvalidPath) compile against existing variants; the PR body's 'no new error variants' claim holds here.
8. read Error enums + rootfs(): crates/check/src/lib.rs:79-112, crates/sandbox2/src/error.rs:1-47, crates/sandbox2/src/lib.rs:359 — self-reported
Both crates define Error::IO(&'static str, PathBuf, io::Error). The new map_err sites pass std::fs::DirEntry::path() (PathBuf, same as the pre-existing line 829 usage) and rootfs.clone() where Sandbox::rootfs() returns PathBuf, so the field types line up.
9. read full .review/pr.diff (413 lines) for secrets and agent-narration comments — self-reported
No credential-shaped strings in the added lines, no new comments narrating the change, and no manifest/lockfile among the changed files, so no dependency scan applies. gitleaks/trivy are not installed in the sandbox, so this was a manual read of the diff.

Scope matches the title: a faithful panic→error refactor across six files, converting unwrap() on to_str, file_type, String::from_utf8, tempdir_in, GcsStorage::builder().build(), cb.build(), and fs::exists to ?/ok_or_else/map_err with existing error variants and From impls (verified rcache::Error::Config, Error::InvalidPath, and Error::Other(anyhow::Error) all exist). Clobber none: git log on the changed files shows the only recent change is the merge of main into the branch, and the diff hunks all trace to the stated intent; no recent fix is reverted. Correctness the conversions are all one-to-one (a panic point becomes the same abort point, now as an error); I traced every hunk against the surrounding source and found no logic change — error propagation happens exactly where the old unwrap did, and short-circuiting in the sandbox2::command boolean chain is preserved. The substantive concerns (half-applied sweep in check, the sibling repo_dir().unwrap() in mctx, the missing comment on the copied RemoteError mapping, and the terse MissingRuntimeDeps errors) are already on the PR as open threads, so I have not re-raised them. One low-severity precision issue below. Not checked: compilation/clippy/tests (the instructions forbid building; the PR reports just clippy and just test pass, which I trust for type-correctness of the ? conversions).

3. grep -nEi '(api[_-]?key|secret|password|token|BEGIN (RSA|OPENSSH|EC))' .review/pr.diff — exit 1 · self-reported
No credential material in the diff; no Cargo.toml/Cargo.lock changes, so no dependency findings.

Probably worth cleaning up the correctness issue before merging |
The sweep in this PR converted the three FileBasedChecker loops but left the same `file_type().unwrap()` / non-UTF-8 `to_str().unwrap()` pattern over user-authored project content in the next functions over: `package_check_futures`, `stack_check_futures`, and the parse checker's build.ncl import, plus `stack.rs` and `naming.rs`. A project with a non-UTF-8-named package or stack directory, or a non-UTF-8 binary name, still panicked `mip check` through them. Each already returns `Result<_, Error>`, so they now propagate an `Error::Other` naming the offending path instead.
`Config::command_cwd` still did `bound_dir_sandbox_cwd().to_str().unwrap()` for a `BoundDir` sandbox — the exact expression this PR hardens one function over in `Sandbox::new_container`. It now returns `Result`, reusing `Error::IO` with a non-UTF-8 `InvalidInput` like its sibling, and `Sandbox::command_cwd` follows. A session sandbox is always `WdSetup::Session` (its working dir comes from a `Utf8PathBuf`), so `Env` resolves the cwd once at build time and keeps the total `command_environment` accessor total. Also pass the path actually probed — `<cwd>/<program>` or `<rootfs>/usr/bin/<program>` — to `Error::IO` in `Sandbox::command`, rather than the rootfs directory.
`Context::repo_dir` ended in `repo_dir_override().as_ref().unwrap()`, so a context whose minimal file has no on-disk location and no `-C` override panicked one arm away from the `state_dir` error this PR added. It now returns `Result`, reporting the unknown location the same way. `project_setup` and `repo_origin` follow; their callers in `mip` and the `min` CLI all already return `Result`. Also fold the two-arm `RemoteError` conversion into a shared `remote_error_to_error`, carrying the note that the arms are not interchangeable so a future reader cannot "simplify" it and regress the user-facing message.

Replaces the private `remote_error_to_error` helper with `From<rcache::Error<AnyRespError>> for mctx::Error`, so call sites use `?`. This also lets `cmd_pkg_build_plan` propagate the remote-cache (GCS client) initialization failure from both of its branches, instead of unwrapping it.

Main's `netns_root_integration.rs` probe reads `sandbox.command_cwd()`, which this branch makes fallible. Resolve it with an `expect` — the probe builds a session sandbox whose cwd cannot fail.
Summary
Library code panicked on inputs it does not control. Parsing a malformed ELF
or PE binary, reading a non-UTF-8 export name, listing a package or stack

GCS client, creating a checkout tempdir, resolving a sandbox's working
