chore(kani): move to Kani 0.68.0, drop the MSRV relaxation, name compile failures - #1435
Conversation
The nightly `kani-canary` job has failed since 2026-09-15. It installs the latest kani-verifier by design; 0.68.0 bundles nightly-2026-08-21 (rustc 1.100.0-nightly 8925ea358), and the proof build dies compiling `backtrace` 0.3.76 with ``error[E0659]: `unreachable` is ambiguous``, which kani.sh then reports as "expected 6 verified harnesses in sessions — vacuous or failing lane". Root cause: Kani compiles every crate against its own `std` shim (`--extern noprelude,nounused:std=$KANI/lib/libstd.rlib`), which `#[macro_export]`s Kani's `assert!`/`panic!`/`unreachable!` at its crate root. 0.68.0's shim also grew a `prelude` module that forwards to real std's and deliberately omits those overrides. A `#![no_std]` dependency that does BOTH `#[macro_use] extern crate std;` and `use std::prelude::v1::*;` therefore resolves two different `unreachable!` — the shim's via the macro_use prelude, real std's via the glob — and fails E0659. `backtrace`, reached via nickel-lang-core -> topiary-core -> miette[fancy], is exactly that shape. 0.67.0's shim had no `prelude` module, so the glob imported no macro and there was no second candidate. No dependency bump is available: 0.3.76 is the newest release (2025-09-26) and backtrace-rs master still has the unqualified call, so `cargo update -p backtrace` is a no-op and Cargo.lock cannot fix this. Kani's own escape hatch for this error, --no-assert-overrides, does not help either — it suppresses the compiler's injection into local crates, not the shim crate's exports (model-checking/kani#4665/#4666/#4687). So the scratch copy vendors backtrace with the one call site qualified as `core::unreachable!()`, which is the same macro, and the block self-disables once a fixed backtrace ships. Verified on macOS arm64: - kani-verifier 0.68.0 / CBMC 6.11.0, before the change: a two-crate reproducer fails with the same E0659 at backtrace types.rs:74. - plain `cargo +nightly-2026-08-21 check` compiles backtrace 0.3.76 cleanly, with and without `-Z build-std`, so this is Kani-specific rather than a rustc regression. - `./scripts/kani.sh` under 0.68.0 after the change: sessions 6/6 and rcache 3/3 successfully verified harnesses, 0 failures. - `./scripts/kani.sh` under the pinned 0.67.0 after the change: sessions 6/6 and rcache 3/3, so the ci-kani lane is unaffected. - `sh -n`, `dash -n` and `shellcheck -s sh` clean. Not verified: Linux hosts (the block is POSIX sh and touches no platform-specific path, but it has only been exercised on darwin). Refs: #1109 Co-Authored-By: Claude Fable 5.1 <noreply@anthropic.com>

Verdict COMMENT — COMMENT: policy.actions.request_changes is off; 2 finding(s) above severity 'nit' rule out APPROVE.
Scope matches the title: pin ci-kani.yml to Kani 0.68.0, drop the scratch-copy MSRV relaxation in scripts/kani.sh, and name compile failures. The diff is 28 insertions / 18 deletions across the two declared files. Clobber none: git log -L on both files shows no recent fix reverted; the removed sed was only the floor patch. Correctness of the pin rationale (0.68.0 bundles nightly-2026-08-21 / rustc 1.100.0-nightly, first above the workspace rust-version = "1.95" floor in Cargo.toml) I could not verify without installing Kani, but the workspace floor is confirmed as 1.95 and the script no longer has any floor patch, so a 0.67.0 install genuinely cannot build the tree anymore — which is where the findings come from. Three findings below: the new compile-failure branch is defeated by the lane's own CARGO_TERM_COLOR: always (the grep can never match cargo's ANSI-prefixed error line, so the fix works in the nightly canary but not in the pinned PR lane), the justfile kani recipe was missed by the pin bump and now installs a version that fails, and the kani-canary comment in nightly-tests.yml describes a workaround this PR just deleted. Not checked: the actual 0.68.0 toolchain contents, which would need a build/install.

Verification log
1. read ci-kani.yml env block — self-reported
Workflow sets CARGO_TERM_COLOR: always (line 26) for every step including
./scripts/kani.sh; KANI_VERSION is 0.68.0.
2. read cargo shell.rs message_stderr via rust-lang/cargo master — self-reported
Shell::error -> message_stderr writes
{style}{status}{style:#}: {message}; under ColorChoice::Always (CARGO_TERM_COLOR=always) anstream emits ANSI, so the error line starts with an escape and the reset lands betweenerrorand:.
3. read kani call_cargo.rs / session.rs run_piped — self-reported
Kani pipes only cargo's stdout (--message-format=json-diagnostic-rendered-ansi); stderr is inherited, so cargo's 'could not compile' summary reaches the script's
2>&1 | teelog. No --color flag is passed to cargo, so the env governs.
4. fixture grep test on colored vs plain cargo error lines — exit 0 · self-reported
grep -q '^error: could not compile'matched the plain line and failed on\033[31;1merror\033[0m: could not compile ...; the unanchored variant also failed on the colored line because the reset escape sits betweenerrorand:. Stripping ANSI first makes it match.
5. grep for Kani version references across repo — exit 0 · self-reported
0.67.0 still referenced at justfile:318-319 (install pin + 'pin rationale' comment) and in the ci-kani.yml array-issue comment (historical, accurate). nightly-tests.yml:377-379 still cites 'the lane's exact 0.67.0 pin' and the scratch-copy MSRV workaround as the canary's signal.
6. read Cargo.toml rust-version + per-crate floors — exit 0 · self-reported
package.rust-version = "1.95" with every crate inheriting via
rust-version.workspace = true; no per-crate floor above the workspace value, so the dropped sed has no hidden residual floor.
7. git log -L / git diff scope check base..head — exit 0 · self-reported
Diff is only ci-kani.yml (pin + comment) and scripts/kani.sh (header, sed removal, expect() branch); base a894dab (#1434) already carries the backtrace [patch.crates-io] workaround. Nothing reverted.

The E0659 workaround cuts its vendored copy from the registry's UNPACKED source, but the glob ran before any cargo invocation — the first one is the `cargo kani` at the end of the script. A registry holding only the `.crate` archive left the glob empty, the block no-opped without a word, and the lane then died on the very E0659 it exists to prevent. CI is exactly that shape, so this was not a one-off cold-cache cost: rust-cache's cleanRegistry deletes every registry/src entry but `-sys` crates before saving and restores only registry/cache, so no ci-kani run has backtrace extracted at the point the glob runs. `cargo fetch` on the scratch copy extracts it (verified against an empty CARGO_HOME: registry/src/index.crates.io-*/backtrace-0.3.76/ appears, not just the .crate), and settles Cargo.lock before the version is read out of it. An `elif` now names a skipped workaround instead of passing over it mutely; the self-disable path a fixed backtrace will trigger stays quiet. Verified on Kani 0.68.0: sessions 6/6, rcache 3/3, vendored copy carrying core::unreachable!(); sh -n, dash -n, shellcheck -s sh clean. Scope matches the title: a one-line Kani pin bump to 0.68.0 in the ci-kani PR lane plus the two follow-ups it enables — dropping the scratch-copy MSRV relaxation in scripts/kani.sh (the 0.68.0 bundled toolchain sits above the workspace package.rust-version = "1.95" floor, so the sed is dead weight) and branching the expect() failure message on could not compile so a dependency build failure is no longer misread as a proof regression. Doc-comment rewords in the two proved crates and the justfile hint/comment update all stay consistent with the new pin; the whole diff is 39 insertions / 24 deletions across 5 files. Clobber none: git log over the range shows four additive commits on the stated base (cfedb9fe); the sed deletion is the PR's own stated intent, and the [patch.crates-io] backtrace workaround block in kani.sh is from the base PR and untouched here. Correctness — the two substantive issues raised in prior review are fixed in the head commit: (1) the compile-failure branch now matches the bare phrase could not compile rather than an anchored error: could not compile, which I reproduced against a fixture of cargo's colored summary under CARGO_TERM_COLOR=always (the ANSI reset between error and : defeats both anchored and unanchored error: forms; the bare phrase matches); (2) the justfile kani recipe now carries 0.68.0 in both the _need hint and the comment. The one remaining open thread (stale kani-canary comment in nightly-tests.yml) is a deliberate, justified decline under the frozen-workflow rule — not re-raised. I checked the branch logic adversarially: a proof failure (nonzero-failures summary) and a zero-harness run both contain no could not compile text, so they still route to the count message; the compile-failure path only fires when cargo's own summary line appears, which is the intent. sh -n and dash-style grep fixtures are clean, no secrets in the diff, no dependency-manifest movement. Not checked: (a) the claim that Kani 0.68.0 exists and bundles nightly-2026-08-21 (rustc 1.100.0-nightly) — a web search confirms the premise (0.67.0 bundled 1.93.0-nightly, below the 1.95 floor) but the public release index it returned tops out at 0.67.0, which is likely index staleness given the PR author's first-hand verification table (Kani Rust Verifier 0.68.0, CBMC 6.11.0, all harnesses verified); if the version did not exist, cargo install --version 0.68.0 would fail loudly in the lane, and the cache key kani-0.68.0-linux correctly forces a fresh install either way; (b) the claims that cargo hard-errors on the rust-version floor and that cargo-kani exposes no --ignore-rust-version — neither is checkable without a Kani install, and both are corroborated by the thread-2 author response. Neither is load-bearing enough to report at confidence. Net: the change is good; no new findings.

Verification log
1. git log --oneline cfedb9fe..0c8c258a — exit 0 · self-reported
Four commits: 0c8c258, ec6f266, 7b47509, fd6c5fe — matches the PR title/body; no reverts or unrelated work.
2. grep -n 'rust-version' Cargo.toml — exit 0 · self-reported
package.rust-version = "1.95", inherited workspace-wide via rust-version.workspace = true; consistent with the 0.68.0-bundled-toolchain-above-floor rationale.
3. printf colored fixture | grep -q 'could not compile' — exit 0 · self-reported
Reproduced cargo's CARGO_TERM_COLOR=always summary (
\033[1m\033[91merror\033[0m: could not compile ...); bare-phrase grep matches while anchored^error: could not compiledoes not — confirms the thread-1 fix in the head commit.
4. grep -rn '0\.67\.0|0\.68\.0' over sh/yml/rs/justfile/md — exit 0 · self-reported
Only remaining 0.67.0-as-pin reference is nightly-tests.yml:377 (the deliberately-declined thread-3 comment); ci-kani.yml:29 and the crate docs mention 0.67.0 only as the historical array-bug boundary. No missed pin sites.
5. sh -n scripts/kani.sh — exit 0 · self-reported
Shell syntax clean after the header rewrite, sed removal, and expect() branch.

7. Read justfile _need and kani recipe at lines 258-259, 315-320 — exit 0 · self-reported
_need only command -v checks and prints the hint; recipe hint and comment both now say 0.68.0 — thread 2 fully addressed.
8. WebSearch: Kani 0.68.0 release toolchain — exit 0 · self-reported
Confirms 0.67.0 bundled nightly-2025-11-21 / rustc 1.93.0-nightly below the floor (the premise); did not find a published 0.68.0 tag in the indexed results, treated as likely-stale index versus the author's first-hand verification table; not raised as a finding.
9. Read ci-kani.yml and nightly-tests.yml kani-canary sections — exit 0 · self-reported
PR lane sets CARGO_TERM_COLOR=always (line 26) and installs KANI_VERSION via the versioned cache key kani-${{ env.KANI_VERSION }}-${{ runner.os }}, so the bump forces a fresh install; canary runs the same kani.sh unpinned and is continue-on-error, so the message branch serves it uncolored too.

The warning added a commit ago covers the branch the fetch above makes unreachable — source not unpacked — and leaves the reachable one mute: a backtrace whose call site still needs qualifying but no longer matches the exact pattern (a message argument, different indentation, a second call site) skips with nothing in the log, and the build then dies on E0659 behind the count message. A second elif names it, and names both futures that reach it, since the log cannot tell them apart: upstream fixed the call (delete the block) or merely reformatted it (widen the pattern). The applied path and its gate are unchanged. Verified: all four gate states dispatch as intended under sh and dash (applied / WARNING / NOTE / silent when backtrace leaves the lock); sh -n, dash -n, shellcheck -s sh clean; ./scripts/kani.sh on Kani 0.68.0 still 6/6 (sessions) and 3/3 (rcache). The vendoring block writes $CARGO_TARGET_DIR into the scratch copy's
[patch.crates-io] entry, and cargo resolves a patch path against that
manifest's directory — which is the scratch workspace, not the repo. A
relative CARGO_TARGET_DIR override therefore pointed the patch at
$ws/<dir>/kani-vendor/..., where nothing was ever created:
error: patch location `/tmp/kani-ws.XXXX/target/kani/kani-vendor/backtrace-0.3.76`
does not contain packages matching `backtrace`
FATAL: expected 6 verified harnesses in sessions — vacuous or failing lane
Reproduced with `CARGO_TARGET_DIR=target/kani ./scripts/kani.sh`. CI is
unaffected (the default is `$PWD/target/kani`), but a relative override
used to be merely wasteful — artifacts went into the scratch and were
deleted — and the patch turned it into a hard failure wearing the wrong
message.
Resolve a relative value against $PWD once, before anything embeds it.
That also makes the "artifacts land in the REAL workspace's target dir"
comment above it true for overrides, which it was not.
Verified: `CARGO_TARGET_DIR=target/kani ./scripts/kani.sh` now exits 0
with 6/6 (sessions) and 3/3 (rcache); sh -n, dash -n, shellcheck -s sh
clean.

…e failures Two follow-ups to the 0.68.0 std-shim fix, both in scripts/kani.sh. Retire the rust-version relaxation. Kani 0.67.0 bundled a 1.93-nightly, numerically below the workspace floor, so the script patched the floor down to 1.90 in its scratch copy just to get cargo past a declarative gate. Kani 0.68.0 bundles nightly-2026-08-21 (rustc 1.100.0-nightly), comfortably above the floor, so the sed is dead weight and is removed. The scratch copy itself stays: the backtrace [patch.crates-io] rewrite needs a tree that is not the real one, and rsyncing the working tree keeps uncommitted changes under proof during local iteration. The header now says that instead of the retired MSRV rationale, and the install line and pin both move to 0.68.0 -- the >64-element array reasoning (kani#2416/#4408) is unchanged, the floor moves only because of the bundled toolchain. Name compile failures for what they are. Every failure printed "expected N verified harnesses ... vacuous or failing lane", which reads as a harness regression; the canary break this branch fixes was a dependency that would not compile. expect() now greps the log for a rustc "could not compile" line and says so explicitly. A log without one -- cargo kani missing, or dead before rustc ran -- still gets the count message, which fits that case. Verified at 0.68.0 with the floor left at 1.95: sessions 6/6 and rcache 3/3 successfully verified harnesses, 0 failures, script exit 0. Clean under sh -n, dash -n, and shellcheck -s sh. Both message branches exercised against canned logs. The workflow's Kani version pin is a separate commit on this branch. Co-Authored-By: Claude Fable 5.1 <noreply@anthropic.com>
The nightly canary proved 0.68.0 on the full suite (sessions 6/6, rcache 3/3) and its bundled nightly-2026-08-21 toolchain is the first above the workspace rust-version floor, so scripts/kani.sh no longer needs to relax the floor in its scratch copy (previous commit). The cache key carries KANI_VERSION, so the lane installs 0.68.0 fresh. Co-Authored-By: Claude Fable 5.1 <noreply@anthropic.com>
The new COMPILE branch keyed on `^error: could not compile`, which the ci-kani lane can never produce: it runs with CARGO_TERM_COLOR=always (ci-kani.yml), where cargo writes the summary as `\033[1m\033[91merror\033[0m: could not compile ...`. The escape before `error` defeats the anchor and the reset between `error` and the colon defeats an unanchored `error: could not compile` too, so the pinned lane would have kept printing the count message for a dependency that would not build — the one misdiagnosis this branch exists to end. Match the unbroken phrase instead. Checked against a real colored log (`CARGO_TERM_COLOR=always` over a type error) plus plain, empty, and count-short fixtures: COMPILE, COMPILE, COUNT, COUNT. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5 (1M context) <noreply@anthropic.com>
The pin bump stopped at ci-kani.yml and scripts/kani.sh. `just kani` still handed out `cargo install --locked kani-verifier --version 0.67.0`, and a developer who followed that hint got a Kani whose bundled 1.93-nightly hard-errors on `package.rust-version = "1.95"` — the sed that used to patch the floor down is gone as of this branch. Two doc comments stated the pin as fact as well, so they now read 0.68.0: rcache's index_file proofs (its >64-element rationale reworded to "releases before 0.67.0", which stays true) and sessions' PathDecision proofs. The remaining 0.67.0 mentions are history — what that release did and did not do — not pin statements. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5 (1M context) <noreply@anthropic.com>

Scope matches the title. Five files, all in-scope: the 0.68.0 pin lands in ci-kani.yml, justfile, and the two proof-module doc comments (rcache/index_file.rs, sessions/policy.rs); scripts/kani.sh drops the scratch-copy MSRV relaxation and names compile failures in expect(). The staged diff was verified byte-identical to git diff c67763ed..HEAD.
Clobber none: the base is the #1434 branch tip (c67763e) and the head is four commits on top of it; git log on the changed paths shows no recent fix reverted.
Correctness checked and found sound. (1) The pin is real and current: crates.io lists kani-verifier 0.68.0 (released 2026-09-16, two days before this PR — consistent with the nightly-canary narrative; an initial web search claiming no 0.68.0 exists was stale). 0.67.0 and 0.68.0 are consecutive releases, so the header's 'first release whose bundled toolchain sits above the 1.95 floor' claim is consistent. (2) The expect() branch greps the bare phrase could not compile rather than error: — exactly the fix for the CARGO_TERM_COLOR=always escape-anchoring problem raised in the prior thread, and present in head commit 6e2eb74. Fallthrough (missing cargo kani, death before the summary) hits the count message as the new comment documents; per-crate logs mean a prior crate's output cannot pollute the grep. sh -n passes on the modified script. (3) The justfile pin fix from the prior thread is present in head commit edae08a; both _need hint and comment carry 0.68.0. (4) Remaining 0.67.0 references are the deliberately-kept stale comment in nightly-tests.yml:377-379 (raised and consciously declined in the resolved thread — not re-raised) and the review harness's own .review/plugin/ docs (out of scope).
Not checked: the exact bundled toolchain date in the header (nightly-2026-08-21 / rustc 1.100.0-nightly) — confirming it requires installing Kani, which would be a build. The author's local exit-0 run and the next ci-kani run on this PR are the proof; nothing in the tree contradicts it. No findings this round.

Scope matches the title exactly: every hunk traces to the stated intent (pin Kani 0.68.0, drop the scratch-copy MSRV relaxation, name compile failures). The crates/rcache and crates/sessions hunks are doc-comment pin updates only, and the backtrace vendoring block at scripts/kani.sh:49-121 is inherited from base #1434, not touched here. Clobber none: git log on all five files shows this PR is the continuation of #1434's branch, and the diff reverts nothing (the absolute-CARGO_TARGET_DIR fix from 4a0e41ef is intact). Correctness the substantive change is the expect() compile-failure branch, and it is sound: it matches the bare phrase could not compile, which survives cargo's ANSI-colored summary verbatim under CARGO_TERM_COLOR=always (ci-kani.yml:26) — the exact failure the prior thread reproduced with error: could not compile — while a proof regression or missing cargo kani produces no such phrase and still gets the count message; both paths exit 1, so the gate is unchanged and only the diagnostic differs. The comment explaining why the phrase (not error:) is matched is defensive documentation of a genuine footgun, not narration. No leftover references to the removed sed or 1.90 anywhere (rg clean; the one justfile:523 hit is unrelated AppArmor text); remaining 0.67.0 mentions are all historical/contextual. The two findings from the prior review threads are both fixed at this head (justfile pin at justfile:319, ANSI-safe grep at scripts/kani.sh:146), and the third thread — the stale kani-canary comment in nightly-tests.yml — was deliberately declined by the author on the frozen-workflow rule, so it is not re-raised here. Not checked: that kani-verifier 0.68.0 actually bundles nightly-2026-08-21 / rustc 1.100.0-nightly above the workspace rust-version = "1.95" floor (Cargo.toml:48) — that requires a Kani install/run; the author's local verification on macOS arm64 is the only evidence, and the next ci-kani run is the real proof. Also not checkable here: the exact ANSI escape cargo emits (the comment's \033[1m\033[91m depiction differs cosmetically from the fixture in the thread, but the code is robust to either form). sh -n passes; shellcheck not available in this sandbox (author reports shellcheck -s sh clean). No findings — the change is small, correct, and addresses both prior review points.

2. rg for '1.90|MSRV relax' in scripts/kani.sh, ci-kani.yml, justfile — exit 1 · self-reported
No leftover MSRV-relaxation references after the sed removal; only ci-kani.yml:33's historical mention of the dropped relaxation remains, which is accurate.
3. rg for '0.67.0' across .github/workflows, justfile, scripts, crates — exit 0 · self-reported
All remaining hits are historical or contextual ("older than 0.67.0", "fixed in 0.67.0") or the deliberately-stale kani-canary comment in nightly-tests.yml:377, which the author declined to change and the thread resolved.
4. git log --oneline -10 on scripts/kani.sh, justfile, ci-kani.yml, index_file.rs, policy.rs — exit 0 · self-reported
No clobber: recent history is this PR's stacked commits plus #1434; the diff reverts no recent fix.
5. grep ci-kani.yml for CARGO_TERM_COLOR and KANI_VERSION cache key — exit 0 · self-reported
ci-kani.yml:26 sets CARGO_TERM_COLOR=always (premise of the bare-phrase grep) and ci-kani.yml:94 keys the cache on $KANI_VERSION, so the pin bump re-installs the lane fresh.
6. grep Cargo.toml for package.rust-version — exit 0 · self-reported
Workspace floor is 1.95 at Cargo.toml:48, consistent with the claim that 0.68.0's bundled toolchain is the first above it.
7. git diff 4a0e41ef fa73e2a9 -- all five changed files — exit 0 · self-reported
Diff scope is exactly the stated intent: pin bumps, comment updates, sed removal, expect() branch; no extraneous hunks.

Verdict COMMENT — COMMENT: policy.actions.request_changes is off; 1 finding(s) above severity 'nit' rule out APPROVE.
Scope matches the stated intent: the KANI_VERSION pin to 0.68.0 in ci-kani.yml, the MSRV-relaxation removal in scripts/kani.sh, the compile-failure branch in expect(), and the pin references in the justfile and the rcache/sessions doc comments. Clobber — no revert, but the head commit is a merge (cd48be32 'Merge branch main') that kept BOTH the branch's and main's copy of the backtrace-vendoring workaround, duplicating 73 lines verbatim; this is invisible in the PR's own diff because the base already carried an identical block from #1434. Correctness — one high finding: the second copy re-appends backtrace = { path = ... } to the scratch manifest's [patch.crates-io], and cargo 1.97.1 rejects the resulting duplicate key (error: duplicate key), so the script dies at the second copy's cargo fetch (line 151) before any proof runs — the PR's own ci-kani lane is deterministically red on its head commit. Everything else in the diff is a consistent pin/comment change, and the could not compile branch already carries the reviewed-and-fixed resolution from thread #1. Not checked — ./scripts/kani.sh end-to-end (no Kani here, and building is out of bounds); the manifest-parse behavior was verified with a scratch cargo 1.97.1 metadata run instead.

| # Kani builds every crate against its own `std` shim (passed as | ||
| # `--extern std=$KANI/lib/libstd.rlib`), which `#[macro_export]`s Kani's | ||
| # `assert!`/`panic!`/`unreachable!`. A `#![no_std]` dependency that does BOTH | ||
| # `#[macro_use] extern crate std;` and `use std::prelude::v1::*;` therefore | ||
| # resolves two DIFFERENT `unreachable!` — the shim's via the macro_use | ||
| # prelude, real std's via the glob — and dies with E0659. `backtrace` (in the | ||
| # graph via nickel-lang-core -> topiary-core -> miette[fancy]) is exactly that | ||
| # shape. This bites from Kani 0.68.0, whose shim grew a `prelude` module that | ||
| # forwards to real std's; 0.67.0 had none, so the glob imported no macro and | ||
| # there was no second candidate. Kani's own escape hatch, | ||
| # --no-assert-overrides, does NOT help: it suppresses the compiler's injection | ||

| # re-fingerprinted (and its dependents rebuilt) on every run. When a fixed | ||
| # backtrace ships, the `grep` stops matching and this block self-disables — | ||
| # delete it then. | ||
| # Fetch FIRST: the vendored copy is cut from the registry's UNPACKED source, | ||
| # but nothing has run cargo at this point (the first build is the `cargo kani` | ||

HIGH · correctness · confidence 0.95
The head commit cd48be3 is a merge of main into this branch, and the merge duplicated the entire backtrace-vendoring workaround: the block added by this diff (new lines 49-121) is byte-identical to the block the base already carried from #1434 (lines 123-195), so the duplication reads as a pure insert in this PR's diff and would ship unnoticed. Both copies execute in sequence. Copy 1's awk appends backtrace = { path = "..." } to the scratch Cargo.toml's [patch.crates-io]; copy 2's (cd "$ws" && cargo fetch) (line 151) then re-parses that manifest, and copy 2's awk re-appends the same patch line a second time. The resulting manifest holds the backtrace key twice, which cargo rejects — reproduced with cargo 1.97.1 on a minimal manifest: error: duplicate key at the second entry. With set -eu, the script exits at copy 2's cargo fetch before any proof runs, so the ci-kani lane this PR exists to fix fails deterministically on its own head commit. Fix is local and trivial: delete the newly-added duplicate (lines 49-121); the identical block already exists on main at 123-195.

First verify this against the code yourself. It is model output and
may be wrong. If it is wrong, or the tradeoff was deliberate, say so

* ci(kani): run the proof lane for crates/bep changes The Kani lane is path-scoped inside the workflow and named only rcache, sessions and the spec-hash codec. The Box Egress Proxy (docs/specs/24) carries its own bounded proofs — the redemption decision, port discipline, the store-handle check and the audit chain — in a new `bep` crate, so a pull request touching only that crate would never run them. Add `crates/bep/**` to the filter and a workspace test that reads the filter, so the lane cannot silently narrow again. Plan task #1510 under epic #1501. The other five lanes are unaffected. Remove the second copy; the first is unchanged.
