bash has very specific rules on which of the the rc and profile files it reads depending on whether it is invoked as a login shell and other things. Is the way it is invoked by minimal SHELL truly supportive of your statement above: "The first readable of ~/.bashrc, ~/.bash_profile, ~/.bash_login, ~/.profile is sourced," |

…hain Two wording fixes from review. The concepts page read "the shell `min session attach` gives you sources the startup file", a garden path; it now says "the shell started by `min session attach` sources". The reference page told a `~/.bashrc` that installs its own `DEBUG` trap to "call `__minimal_attach_env` from yours", which reads as "from your .bashrc" — a one-shot call at startup that leaves later attaches unrefreshed. Both places now say the replacement trap itself must call `__minimal_attach_env`. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5 <noreply@anthropic.com>

Three follow-ups from review: - concepts/loadouts.md: the shell an attach starts sources the startup file you patched in, except plain `sh`, whose startup file is the daemon's `$ENV`. Say so, and point the reference link at the session-shell section. - reference/loadouts.md: `~/.bashrc` is the file bash would read here on its own, had `--rcfile` not displaced it; the previous wording read as if bash were reading it directly. - reference/user-policy.md: a patch whose `dest` is a shell startup file is code execution on every attach now that the session bash sources `~/.bashrc`, so the allow decision should weigh the `dest` as well as the source. Summary
A session bash is started
--noprofile --rcfile <daemon rc> -i, so it findsnone of its own startup files:
--rcfilereplaces~/.bashrcwith thedaemon's rc, which until now only installed the
TERM-refresh hook. That madebash the one shell whose startup file a loadout patch could not reach — zsh,
fish, and nushell all read theirs out of the session home, which is where
patches land — so a
dest = ".bashrc"patch silently did nothing.Since that rc is the only file a session bash reads, it now does both jobs
the other shells split between a system rc and a user one: install the hook,
then source
~/.bashrc. The argv is unchanged —--noprofileis a no-op fora non-login shell, and
--rcfilecan't be dropped without losing the hook(this build has no
/etc/bash.bashrc).~/.bashrcand nothing else, because that is what bash itself would readhere. The session shell is an interactive non-login bash — no
-l, and anargv[0]of/usr/bin/bashwith no leading-, which are the only two waysbash becomes a login shell — so
shopt login_shellreports off inside it. Thelogin chain (
~/.bash_profile,~/.bash_login,~/.profile) belongs to alogin shell and stays unread; those files hold once-per-login setup, and
running them in a non-login shell happens nowhere else a bash user has been. A
dotfiles tree that keeps its bash setup in
~/.bash_profilereaches thesession by naming the patch
dest = ".bashrc"— a patch names its owndestination, unlike the layout of a real home directory.
The hook goes in before your file runs, which leaves one sharp edge: bash's
refresh is a
DEBUGtrap, so a~/.bashrcthat installs its own replaces it.Call
__minimal_attach_envfrom yours. Documented in both places it matters.Testing
cargo test -p minimald --lib— five new tests drive a real bash against thegenerated rc: a patched
.bashrcruns, and runs after the hook(
a_patched_bashrc_is_sourced_after_the_hook); a home carrying all four filesgets
.bashrcexactly once and none of the others (the_login_chain_is_not_sourced);a home carrying only a login-chain file gets nothing and still comes up
(
a_login_chain_file_alone_is_not_a_bashrc); an empty home starts at$? == 0(
a_home_with_no_startup_file_starts_cleanly); and the rc orders the hookbefore the user's file (
the_bash_rc_installs_the_hook_before_the_users_startup_file).scripts/session-e2e.sh— new group patches a.bashrcthrough a loadout andasserts the marker over a real pty attach, against a host-native daemon:
::group::session bash sources a patched .bashrc
patched .bashrc proof OK (sourced, and after the daemon's hook)
cargo fmt --checkandcargo clippy -p minimald --all-targets -- -D warningsclean;
