fix: order the mfile task table, dropping a redundant task-list sort - #1334
Conversation
Change `mfile::File.tasks` from `HashMap` to `BTreeMap` so `iter_tasks` yields tasks in name order. With the carrier deterministic, the `sort_unstable` in `unknown_task_message` (crates/minimal/src/task.rs), which only existed to order the declared-task list, is redundant and is removed. The status-command sort in crates/mip/src/cmd_status.rs is left in place: it orders `mctx::Context::iter_tasks`, which appends stack-provided tasks after the mfile tasks, so that merged list is not name-ordered by the carrier change alone.

Verdict COMMENT — COMMENT: policy.actions.request_changes is off; policy.actions.approve is off.
Scope: matches the stated intent exactly — swap mfile::File.tasks from HashMap to BTreeMap and drop the now-redundant sort in unknown_task_message. Both changed files are the ones the PR body names, nothing extraneous.
Clobber: none. No recent competing work on these lines; the cited precedent (#1319 / c37cdb7) is real and establishes the same pattern for EnvPatches::to_fs_mappings.
Correctness: verified by tracing every other consumer of tasks/iter_tasks. mctx::Context::iter_tasks appends stack tasks after the mfile tasks, so cmd_status's explicit sort is still necessary and was correctly left in place. scaffolding_walk only folds into a HashSet, so order there is genuinely irrelevant, also correctly left alone. The existing unit test already declares tasks out of name order and asserts sorted output, so it validates the new behavior without modification. No other call site does HashMap-specific operations on the field. This is a clean, well-scoped, well-verified change with nothing to flag.

Verification log
1. rg for all consumers of mfile::File.tasks and File::iter_tasks across the workspace — self-reported
Only three call sites outside mfile: crates/minimal/src/task.rs (unknown_task_message, the diff's target), crates/mctx/src/lib.rs::Context::iter_tasks (merges mfile tasks with stack tasks appended after, so order is not carrier-guaranteed), and crates/mctx/src/lib.rs::scaffolding_walk (folds task.packages into a HashSet, order-independent). This matches exactly what the PR body claims about each site.
2. Read crates/mip/src/cmd_status.rs:32-42 (print_tasks) — self-reported
print_tasks calls ctx.iter_tasks(&graph) (the mctx-level merge of mfile + stack tasks) and keeps an explicit tasks.sort_by(...) at line 42. Confirmed this sort is still load-bearing after the BTreeMap change, since stack-provided tasks are appended after the mfile tasks and are not name-ordered by the carrier change alone.
3. Read crates/mctx/src/lib.rs:988-998 (scaffolding_walk) — self-reported
for name in mfile.tasks.keys() feeds a HashSet accumulator (out.extend(task.packages)); the resulting order has no observable effect, so no change was needed there.
4. Read the existing unit test unknown_task_message_lists_declared_tasks_sorted (crates/minimal/src/task.rs:613-624) — self-reported
Builds a mfile::File from TOML declaring task 'b' before 'a', asserts the error message lists 'a, b'. With tasks now a BTreeMap, iter_tasks() yields name order regardless of declaration order, so the removed sort_unstable() is redundant and the existing test still holds without modification.
5. rg for other construction/API use of File.tasks (HashMap-specific methods, literal HashMap construction, entry/insert/remove) — self-reported
No other file constructs File.tasks as a HashMap literal, and the only operations used on it (.get, .iter, immutable for-loop) are common to both HashMap and BTreeMap, so the type change is a drop-in replacement with no fallout elsewhere in the tree.
6. git log -- crates/mfile/src/lib.rs and crates/minimal/src/task.rs — self-reported
Confirmed the cited precedent c37cdb7 'refactor(mfile, graph): deterministic order for package-derived setup (#1319)' exists in history, and this PR's two touched files carry no other very recent competing change it could be reverting.

Verdict COMMENT — COMMENT: policy.actions.request_changes is off; policy.actions.approve is off.
Scope: Matches the stated intent exactly — swap mfile::File::tasks from HashMap to BTreeMap for name-ordered iteration (following the EnvPatches/#1319 precedent), and drop the now-redundant sort_unstable() in unknown_task_message. Only the two files listed in pr.json are touched.
Clobber: None. Builds directly on #1319 with no reverted or overwritten work (git log on both files shows a clean, unrelated-to-this-fix history).
Correctness: Verified. The two remaining sort sites were checked against their call sites and both are correctly left alone: cmd_status's sort is still required because mctx::Context::iter_tasks appends stack tasks after mfile tasks, so the merged list isn't ordered by the carrier change alone; scaffolding_walk only folds task names into an order-independent HashSet/Vec of packages, so no change was needed there. The existing unit test for unknown_task_message still passes since BTreeMap iteration order already matches its assertions. No other consumers of File::tasks exist in the workspace.
The one open review thread (CodeRabbit's breaking-API-change concern) was already addressed by the author with a documented, verifiable rationale (package.publish = false, all consumers in-workspace) and is not re-raised here.
Nothing needed a build to confirm; everything above was checked by reading the source and call sites directly.

Verification log
1. rg for iter_tasks/tasks.keys()/pub tasks consumers across the workspace — self-reported
Only three consumers of File::tasks / iter_tasks() exist: crates/minimal/src/task.rs (unknown_task_message), crates/mip/src/cmd_status.rs (via mctx::Context::iter_tasks), and crates/mctx/src/lib.rs's scaffolding_walk. Confirms the PR body's claim that these are the only call sites affected by the HashMap->BTreeMap change.
2. Read crates/mip/src/cmd_status.rs print_tasks — self-reported
print_tasks still calls tasks.sort_by after ctx.iter_tasks(&graph); this is correct to keep because mctx::Context::iter_tasks (crates/mctx/src/lib.rs:783) appends stack-provided TaskSource::Stack entries after the mfile-sourced ones, so the merged Vec is not name-ordered by the BTreeMap change alone, exactly as the PR body states.
3. Read crates/mctx/src/lib.rs scaffolding_walk (line 988) and its two callers — self-reported
scaffolding_walk iterates mfile.tasks.keys() only to build a HashSet of BuildSpecRef/packages (order-independent); its callers scaffolding_packages/needed_packages return a Vec/HashSet that discards task order, so no change was needed there, matching the PR body.
4. Read crates/minimal/src/task.rs unit test unknown_task_message_lists_declared_tasks_sorted (line 613) — self-reported
Test still passes: BTreeMap<String, Task> iteration is already name-ordered, so removing the sort_unstable() call does not change the assertion 'declared tasks: a, b'. No serde/(de)serialization or snapshot tests depend on the old HashMap's incidental order.
5. git log --oneline -15 on the two changed files — self-reported
No revert or clobber: this PR follows directly from c37cdb7 (#1319, the BTreeMap-for-EnvPatches precedent this PR body cites) with no unrelated intervening changes undone.
6. Read the existing unresolved thread in .review/threads.json (crates/mfile/src/lib.rs:875) and the in-source comment it references — self-reported
CodeRabbit's breaking-API-change concern about the HashMap->BTreeMap field swap was already raised, already answered by the author (workspace is package.publish = false, all consumers are in-workspace path deps), and the reasoning is preserved in-source. Not re-raised per the 'already replied to' rule.

mfile::File.taskswas aHashMap, soiter_tasks()yielded tasks innondeterministic order that every consumer had to re-sort. This makes it a
BTreeMap, so iteration is name-ordered at the carrier — the precedent#1319 set for
EnvPatches::to_fs_mappings. The now-redundantsort_unstable()inunknown_task_messageis removed. Thecmd_statussort is kept on purpose: it orders
mctx::Context::iter_tasks, whichappends stack-provided tasks after the mfile tasks, so that merged list is
not name-ordered by the carrier change alone.
scaffolding_walkthreads amutated graph over
tasks.keys(), but its callers discard theorder-dependent field, so it needs no change.
