fix: navigate the session-exit menu by label in the e2e PTY driver - #1386
Conversation
The e2e attach PTY driver answered the daemon session-exit menu with a fixed single Down-arrow, assuming exactly two rows. The daemon builds that menu conditionally: a Save-changes-then-delete lane is inserted between the keep and delete rows whenever the session file delta is non-empty. The sandbox proof adds a package inside the session, which always dirties minimal.toml, so the Save lane was always present and one Down always selected Save-then-delete rather than Delete, leaving the plain Delete lane uncovered. Read the rendered menu the driver already captures, match the requested answer to a row by label, and send one Down per row to reach it, failing loudly if the label is absent. Verdict COMMENT — COMMENT: policy.actions.request_changes is off; policy.actions.approve is off.
Scope matches the title: 77 lines in scripts/e2e-attach-pty.py only; the daemon side is untouched, and the PR body's account of the bug is accurate against the source (crates/minimald/src/session_host.rs:909-931 inserts the Save-then-delete lane between keep and delete only when the delta is non-empty, so the old single Down always landed on Save-then-delete). Clobber none: git log scripts/e2e-attach-pty.py shows HEAD (ce48e41) is the PR commit and no recent fix is reverted. Correctness I verified the new logic against the real renderer rather than the diff alone: crates/async-dialog/src/select.rs render_into writes the prompt on its own line then each item on its own line prefixed > (highlighted) or two spaces, so menu_rows's header anchor and row-prefix scan match the daemon's actual bytes. A Python harness (no build) fed both menu shapes — 3-row (delta non-empty) and 2-row (delta empty, with the "— nothing will be lost" suffix) — and confirmed delete yields one Down per intervening row plus Enter while keep stays a bare Enter, for both shapes; a fragmented frame returns None until complete, so the elif not chunk loud-failure path cannot false-fire against the daemon's single write_all opening frame. The one fragility I probed — menu_rows returning [] if a blank line ever separated the header from the first row — cannot occur with the current renderer, which writes prompt and rows contiguously. No secrets (rg over the file; gitleaks unavailable). Coverage note, not a finding: the fix deliberately stops the sandbox proof from landing on the Save-then-delete lane, so the save/archive-write path in session_host.rs (a real user-facing teardown option) now has no e2e exercise; if that lane is worth keeping covered, a future proof would need to select it deliberately. Not checked: an actual pty run of the script (would need a live daemon/session), and the claim that the sandbox proof's min add always dirties minimal.toml — both are consistent with the code I read.
What ran
5 probe(s), all self-reported — every entry below is the model's own account of what it ran. None of it is host-attested, so none of it can gate a blocking verdict.
Verification log
1. Read crates/minimald/src/session_host.rs:848-960 (shell_exit_prompt menu construction) — self-reported
Menu is built conditionally: items start with 'Exit, leaving the session filesystem in place and recoverable', Save-then-delete is inserted only when delta is known non-empty, Delete is last. Matches the PR's description of the bug and the script's ANSWER_LABEL_PREFIX mapping.
2. Read crates/async-dialog/src/select.rs render_into (lines 189-219) — self-reported
Prompt rendered on its own line followed by items each prefixed '> ' (highlighted) or two spaces, one item per line, no blank line between header and rows. Confirms menu_rows' header-anchor and row-prefix assumptions; the blank-line edge case cannot occur.
3. python3 /tmp/test_menu.py (harness replicating menu_rows/answer_keystrokes against simulated Select frames) — exit 0 · self-reported
3-row menu: delete -> b'\x1b[B\x1b[B\r', keep -> b'\r'; 2-row menu: delete -> b'\x1b[B\r', keep -> b'\r'. Fragmented frame returns None for delete until the frame is complete, then the correct 2-Down sequence. A trailing newline after the last row is handled (empty split element terminates the scan).
4. git diff HEAD~1 HEAD --stat; git log --oneline -8 -- scripts/e2e-attach-pty.py — exit 0 · self-reported
Only scripts/e2e-attach-pty.py changed (77 lines). HEAD is the PR commit; no recent fix reverted; prior commit is the detach-key change (c864e61).
5. rg -n 'AWS|SECRET|TOKEN|PASSWORD|api[_-]?key' scripts/e2e-attach-pty.py — exit 1 · self-reported
No credential patterns in the changed file. gitleaks not installed; targeted rg used instead.

scripts/e2e-attach-pty.pyanswered the daemon's interactive session-exit menu with a fixed single Down-arrow, which assumes exactly two rows.crates/minimald/src/session_host.rsbuilds that menu conditionally: a "Save changes ..., then delete" lane is inserted between the keep row and the "Delete" row whenever the session's file delta is non-empty. The session sandbox proof runsmin addinside the session, which always dirtiesminimal.toml, so the Save lane was always present and one Down always landed on Save-then-delete — the plain Delete lane never actually ran, and an archive-write failure would have reddened the lane for a reason nothing in the script explained. The driver now reads the menu output it already captures, counts one Down per row to the row whose label matches the requested answer (bare Enter forkeep), and fails loudly if that label is absent, soE2E_PTY_ANSWER=deleteselects Delete regardless of how many lanes the daemon offers.Verification
