fix: document activating a path that already has a session - #1348
norrietaylor merged 2 commits into
Conversation
The session activate reference and the sessions concept guide did not mention what happens when a project directory already carries a session: activation warns, names the existing session, and creates a second one anyway, after which path-based resolution of a bare min in that directory is ambiguous and session attach falls back to its picker (erroring under --no-input). Add a note to the session activate section of the CLI reference and a matching paragraph beside the attach guidance in the sessions guide so the consequence the warning describes is documented.

Verdict COMMENT — COMMENT: policy.actions.request_changes is off; policy.actions.approve is off.
Scope: matches intent exactly — two documentation-only files, each gaining one paragraph that documents an existing (unchanged) CLI behavior. No code, tests, or config touched.
Clobber: none. git log on both files shows this commit only adds content; nothing from recent history is reverted or overwritten.
Correctness: verified against the implementation. crates/minimal/src/lib.rs:1131-1161 confirms session activate on a path that already has a session warns and still mints a second session, and crates/minimal/src/lib.rs:2761-2764 / crates/minimal/src/attach.rs confirm the ambiguous-resolution picker/--no-input error path. Both new paragraphs accurately describe this behavior and point the reader at attach as the fix, matching the PR body's stated motivation.
No findings. This is a well-scoped, accurate docs fix.

Verification log
1. rg for the activate-warns-and-mints-a-second-session behavior in crates/minimal/src/lib.rs — self-reported
Found the exact behavior at crates/minimal/src/lib.rs:1131-1161: a doc comment says activating a path that already has a session mints a second, independent one, and the warning text built at line 1157-1159 reads 'warning: a session already exists for this path (...); activating creates a second one, leaving bare
minhere ambiguous between them.' This matches both new doc paragraphs almost verbatim.
2. rg for the ambiguous-picker / --no-input error path referenced by the new docs — self-reported
crates/minimal/src/lib.rs:2761-2764 shows resolve_smart_attach bailing with attach::ambiguous_no_input_message when global.no_input or an interactive picker isn't available, confirming the '
session attachopens a picker ... erroring under --no-input' claim in both new paragraphs.
3. git log --oneline -15 on the two touched doc files, to check for a silent revert of recent work — self-reported
Latest history is 004b4d6, c864e61, 5fe5d36, df6a1c1, 8c51722, ... — this commit is purely additive (two new paragraphs) and does not touch or remove any content from those prior commits.
4. Read both new paragraphs in context (docs/reference/cli-min.md and docs/concepts/sessions.md) for duplication/narration issues — self-reported
The two paragraphs are placed in their respective sections (CLI flag table for
session activate; concept guide beside the attach walkthrough), worded independently rather than copy-pasted, and read as end-user documentation rather than narration about the PR itself.

Verdict COMMENT — COMMENT: policy.actions.request_changes is off; policy.actions.approve is off.
Scope: matches the stated intent exactly — two additive paragraphs (17 lines, 0 deletions) documenting that activating an already-sessioned path warns and still creates a second session, and that this makes path resolution (bare min, session attach) ambiguous. No unrelated hunks.
Clobber: none. git log/diff-stat on both files show only insertions since the prior commit; nothing reverted.
Correctness: verified against the code, not just plausible-sounding prose. duplicate_session_warning (crates/minimal/src/lib.rs:1131-1180) does warn-and-proceed as described, and the non-interactive picker error condition documented in both files (--no-input set, or stdin/stdout not a terminal) matches can_pick_interactively() (crates/minimal/src/attach.rs:232) and its use at the ambiguous-picker gate (crates/minimal/src/lib.rs:2762). This also matches a prior CodeRabbit review thread that asked for exactly this stdin/stdout wording, already resolved in this PR's head commit.
Not reported: an inconsistent line-wrap in the last sentence of each new paragraph (a short orphaned line). Purely cosmetic — Markdown rendering collapses it into normal prose, and there's no wrap-width lint in this repo to fail on it.
Nothing else to flag; this is a clean, accurate docs fix.

Verification log
1. rg for duplicate-session warning and picker fallback in crates/minimal — self-reported
Confirmed the documented behavior (activate warns and still creates a second session; bare
minandsession attachthen can't disambiguate) againstduplicate_session_warningin crates/minimal/src/lib.rs:1131-1180.
2. rg can_pick_interactively / ambiguous_no_input_message in crates/minimal/src/attach.rs — self-reported
Confirmed the picker's non-interactive error condition (
--no-inputOR stdin/stdout not a terminal) matches attach.rs:232-233 (can_pick_interactively) and the gate at lib.rs:2762 (global.no_input || !attach::can_pick_interactively()), which is exactly what both doc paragraphs state.
3. checked .review/threads.json for prior resolved feedback on this same content — self-reported
A prior CodeRabbit thread on docs/concepts/sessions.md asked for the non-interactive condition to also cover 'stdin/stdout is not a terminal', not just
--no-input; a later commit (5474581, this PR's head) already applied that fix and the thread is marked resolved/outdated. The diff under review reflects the fixed wording, so there is nothing further to raise here.
4. checked line-wrap consistency of the two new paragraphs — self-reported
Both new paragraphs end with an oddly short wrapped line (e.g. 'you mean to' / 'existing session instead when you mean to') inconsistent with the ~78-char wrap used elsewhere in these files. Not reported as a finding: Markdown collapses single newlines into a space when rendered, so this has no effect on the rendered docs, and neither file has markdownlint/prettier wrap-width enforcement in CI (no config found, and other lines in sessions.md run up to 142 chars) - it's a cosmetic source artifact only.
5. git diff a812c94..5474581 --stat -- docs/concepts/sessions.md docs/reference/cli-min.md — self-reported
Change is purely additive (17 insertions, 0 deletions across both files) and matches the PR title/body exactly; no unrelated hunks, no reverted content, no clobber of recent work on these files.
