Interactive slideshow for multiple images - #36
Conversation
macOS poll(2) does not support devices -- its own manual page says so under BUGS -- and a poll on /dev/tty returns immediately with POLLNVAL, which reads as "never readable". Whenever stdin is a pipe (curl ... | kittyview), detection queries go out on /dev/tty, so on macOS every one of them silently timed out: detection fell back to environment variables, and the replies the terminal still sent were never drained and could land as garbage on the shell prompt after exit. select(2) has a separate, working kernel path for /dev/tty, and is how fzf, less, and kitty's own tools wait on it. The fd is bounds-checked against FD_SETSIZE, where an oversized fd would be a buffer overflow rather than an error return. Co-Authored-By: Claude Fable 5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
Giving kittyview more than one file now opens a slideshow on the alternate screen: Right/Space/n and Left/Backspace/p navigate, Home/End jump to the ends, r redraws the slide from scratch, and q/Esc/Ctrl-C quit. Images are fitted to the window and centred, with a status line naming the file and its position in the list. Every draw uses the same protocol commands as single-image display. Slides on placeholder cells switch without flicker: an a=T,U=1 transmission is invisible until placeholder cells reference it, so the data streams out while the previous slide still shows, and the visible switch is a small delete-erase-grid burst. Each replaced slide's data is deleted from the terminal's image store (d=I), so a long slideshow does not accumulate hundreds of megabytes in the terminal. CSI 2J is never used between slides: terminals delete image data on a clear screen, the just-transmitted image included. Placeholder cells carry an explicit placement ID in their underline colour, so they resolve against exactly the slideshow's placement. Restoring the terminal is layered: one cleanup path for quits and errors, a panic hook that restores the screen before the panic message prints, fatal signals caught, cleaned up after, and re-raised so the exit status still reports them, and Ctrl-Z suspends and resumes properly. Key input waits on select(2) against /dev/tty, decoding both CSI and SS3 cursor sequences with a 50ms escape timeout. Multiplexers earn their own handling, learned the hard way against tmux 3.7 with Ghostty 1.3.1: the alternate screen is entered after the first transmission, because tmux drops passthrough while the redraw from a screen switch is pending; every draw's arrival is verified over the protocol's reply channel (a silent-on-success placement probe chased by a DA barrier) and retried on loss, with a diagnostics line on exit; and slide changes rebuild by way of the pane's main screen -- a brief flash -- because Ghostty through 1.3.1 renders placeholder images delivered as in-place pane updates blank even with the data confirmed present, while a full repaint renders them correctly. Unix only for now: no native Windows terminal displays kitty graphics from a local process, so on Windows the slideshow refuses with an explanation instead. Co-Authored-By: Claude Fable 5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
A debugging aid, not part of the CLI: draws the built-in logo via Unicode placeholders in isolated variants -- flowed vs cursor-positioned rows, main vs alternate screen, with a pause after the screen switch, and a three-step navigation cycle -- so that when a terminal or multiplexer renders the slideshow blank, running the variants in the failing pane says which ingredient breaks. This is the tool that pinned tmux's passthrough drops and Ghostty 1.3.1's placeholder rendering gaps. Co-Authored-By: Claude Fable 5 <noreply@anthropic.com>

The assertion compared the value to itself, proving only that an ID came back. Assert what the animation path is expected to report: the random image ID the frames were transmitted under -- the one the next slide must delete -- not the fixed direct-animation ID. Field-tested on Ghostty 1.3.1 directly (no tmux): the first slide never rendered, while every navigated-to slide did. Kitty-model terminals keep a separate image store per screen buffer, so the first draw's transmit-before-?1049h ordering -- added for tmux -- parked the image in the main screen's store, and the alternate screen's cells referenced an image that did not exist there. Navigation draws transmit inside the alternate screen, which is why they worked. The prelude's position now depends on who sits between us and the terminal, and both orders are load-bearing in opposite directions: direct (and under Zellij, which receives the switch itself), the screen switch comes first; through tmux/screen passthrough, the transmission comes first, because the pane's screen switch schedules a redraw during which tmux drops passthrough -- while the outer terminal, whose store holds the image, never switches screens at all. Image IDs are drawn at random by design, so the test cannot pin a fixed value; what it can pin is that the reported ID is the one the whole animation sequence was built on. Assert it against the base frame transmission, the extra frame (with its delay), and the loop-start control, and name the frame delay so it is not mistaken for an ID. Co-Authored-By: Claude Fable 5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
The prelude-ordering fix covered static virtual slides but left animations transmitting after the alternate-screen entry, exposed to the same tmux redraw-window drops on the first draw. The reasoning that moved static transmissions extends to whole animations: the base frame, the extra frames, and the loop start all address the image, and nothing displays until placeholder cells reference the placement -- so the entire sequence now rides in phase one, ordered around the prelude the same way. The grid rows, now written separately, are cursor-positioned like static slides: centred and bound to the slide placement ID, instead of newline-flowed at column 1. Direct placements stay as they are: an image drawn at the cursor cannot precede the screen switch on direct terminals (per-screen image stores), and under passthrough direct placement is already documented as degraded. Co-Authored-By: Claude Fable 5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
test/slideshow-test.sh follows visual-test.sh's human-in-the-loop pattern for what unit tests cannot see: it builds distinguishable slides (logo, wide, tall, one deliberately broken), has the tester drive every key including suspend/resume, and asks the questions that matter -- did everything render, and is the terminal exactly as it was found. Run it once directly and once inside tmux. Unit-test gaps closed: a first slide that fails to load still enters the alternate screen before erasing; cache eviction at the first slide does not underflow; bound placeholder rows carry the placement ID in the underline colour, including the truecolor form for IDs past one byte. The README keys table gains Ctrl-Z. Co-Authored-By: Claude Fable 5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
Up and Down were decoded and deliberately ignored, but reaching for them is natural -- not least on Mac keyboards, where Home/End and PgUp/PgDn hide behind the Fn layer -- and a slideshow has no competing meaning for them. Down advances, Up goes back, in both CSI and SS3 encodings. The visual test script now also names Fn+Left/Fn+Right as the Mac spelling of Home/End. Co-Authored-By: Claude Fable 5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
Ctrl-Z inside the slideshow raised SIGTSTP on kittyview alone. Run from a wrapper script -- test/slideshow-test.sh included -- the wrapper shares the foreground process group and kept running, blocked in wait, so the interactive shell never showed a prompt and `fg` had nothing to resume. Stopping the group (kill(0, SIGTSTP), fzf's suspend) stops the wrapper with us; the shell reports the stopped job and `fg` continues the pair. Run directly, the group is just kittyview and nothing changes. In an orphaned process group the kernel discards the stop, per POSIX, and the slideshow simply redraws -- a graceful no-op. Co-Authored-By: Claude Fable 5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
…RITY.md The slideshow grew both: unsafe is still exclusively libc FFI for terminal control (now including select(2) and signal handling, with handlers that only store an atomic flag), and kittyview now reads more from the terminal than detection replies -- transmission checks and raw-mode keyboard input -- all of it time-bounded and parsed by pure-Rust parsers that discard what they do not recognise. Co-Authored-By: Claude Fable 5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
The existing fuzz targets covered the input-file parsers; the parsers facing terminal-controlled input were only unit-tested. Two new targets close that: terminal_replies runs every reply parser over arbitrary bytes -- XTVERSION, DA2, XTWINOPS, the kitty graphics capability answer, the response-completeness scanner, and the slideshow's transmission-check verdict -- and slideshow_keys drains the raw-mode key decoder over arbitrary byte streams, which must terminate and never over-read whatever arrives. The weekly fuzz workflow discovers targets with `cargo fuzz list`, so it picks these up unchanged. The parsers become `pub` for the fuzz crate to link, which is the library's stated purpose. SlideList::new clamps its count to one, so slideshow::run(&[], ..) indexed slide zero of an empty slice -- a panic, and one that would have fired inside raw mode with the panic hook already armed. The CLI never sends an empty list, but run is public library API. Guard it first thing, before any terminal interaction, which also makes the case testable headlessly.
