OpenSSF scorecard: fuzzing, CodeQL, release provenance, workflow hardening - #35
Conversation
The modules only ever referenced each other, never main.rs, so the split is mechanical: lib.rs re-exports them and main.rs imports them through the crate. Needed so fuzz targets (and future integration tests) can link against the internals. Co-Authored-By: Claude Fable 5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
Fuzz the two hand-written untrusted-input parsers named in SECURITY.md's scope: svg::convert_foreign_objects (XML/foreignObject preprocessing) and geometry::png_dimensions (IHDR parsing). The workflow runs each target weekly, uploads crash reproducers, and files an issue on failure -- scheduled-run notifications otherwise reach only whoever last edited the cron line. Co-Authored-By: Claude Fable 5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
Rust analysis is GA since CodeQL 2.23.3; build-mode none is the only supported mode for Rust. Co-Authored-By: Claude Fable 5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
The attest step already records provenance in GitHub's attestation store, but nothing about a release showed it. Copy the Sigstore bundle into the release assets so artifacts can be verified offline, and document both verification paths in SECURITY.md. Also make the workflow's empty top-level permissions explicit. Co-Authored-By: Claude Fable 5 <noreply@anthropic.com>

- Line 30: Pin the cargo-fuzz installation in the workflow by defining a fixed
CARGO_FUZZ_VERSION and passing it to the existing cargo install cargo-fuzz
command with --version; retain --locked and require deliberate version updates.
In `@SECURITY.md`:
- Around line 28-34: Update the provenance verification documentation to show
the online command for saving the trusted root, then include the resulting
trusted-root file via --custom-trusted-root in the offline gh attestation verify
example. Preserve the existing bundle-based verification flow and repository
references.
- Line 25: Update both gh attestation verify commands in SECURITY.md to include
--source-ref refs/tags/vX.Y.Z and --deny-self-hosted-runners, preserving the
existing repository and artifact arguments while enforcing release-tag
verification.

An incompatible new release would otherwise break the weekly run before it fuzzes anything. Co-Authored-By: Claude Fable 5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
The README's verification commands already pin --source-ref and deny self-hosted runners; SECURITY.md documented the weak form, which any build from any ref satisfies. Also document the trusted root needed for fully offline verification. Co-Authored-By: Claude Fable 5 <noreply@anthropic.com>

Improves the OpenSSF scorecard on the checks that can be fixed from the repo, keeping each change as small as the check allows.
Changes
svg::convert_foreign_objectsandgeometry::png_dimensions— plus a weekly workflow that runs them, uploads crash reproducers, and files an issue on failure. Scorecard detectslibfuzzer_sysin-tree, so no OSS-Fuzz registration is involved. Required splitting a library crate out of the binary (mechanical; modules never referencedmain.rs).build-mode: noneis the only supported mode.kittyview-provenance.intoto.jsonl), and SECURITY.md documents online and offline verification withgh attestation verify.Security review
The workflows (existing + new) were audited manually and with zizmor 1.29 (clean at default severity): no dangerous triggers, no untrusted interpolation in
run:blocks of PR-triggered workflows, no cache usage, credentials never persisted, and every action SHA pin verified against its upstream tag (the dtolnay pin verified by branch ancestry). Not addressed here: CII-Best-Practices needs a bestpractices.dev registration, and Signed-Releases only reaches 10 once the last five releases carry provenance assets — existing releases can be backfilled from the attestation store with
gh attestation download+gh release upload.🤖 Generated with Claude Code
