Problem

adjust_brightness_contrast calls gimp-drawable-brightness-contrast, which on GIMP 3 applies the formula in linear light. Even small values badly distort the image. On GIMP 3.2.6, with a 0–255 gray gradient at brightness +8 / contrast +12:

  • every input from 0 to 55 becomes pure black
  • the midtone gets darker (128 → 123) despite positive brightness

The same happens on a 16-bit linear image.

Fix

Apply GIMP's own brightness/contrast formula (value shifted by brightness / 2, then (value - 0.5) * tan((contrast + 1) * π/4) + 0.5) as a 256-entry LUT through Gimp.Drawable.curves_explicit() on the VALUE channel. curves_explicit works in perceptual space. I checked this with a threshold LUT on both an 8-bit non-linear and a 16-bit linear image: the output flips at input 128 in both cases, where linear would flip near 188.

The public tool signature and the −127..127 ranges are unchanged. A failed curves_explicit call now raises instead of passing silently.

Verification

Tested on GIMP 3.2.6 (Windows 11) through the MCP tool, using throwaway 256×1 gradients (0–255), comparing every output pixel to the formula computed in perceptual space:

brightness, contrast max abs diff
8, 12 0
0, 0 (identity) 0
127, 0 1
−127, 0 1
0, 127 0
0, −127 0
60, −40 0

The ±1 at the brightness extremes comes from LUT interpolation.

Also checked:

  • alpha is preserved on an RGBA layer
  • grayscale images work
  • python -m py_compile passes

Not run: ruff check and run_tests.py.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes
    • Adjusted brightness and contrast processing to preserve shadow detail more accurately.
    • Brightness and contrast values are now constrained to supported ranges for more predictable results.
    • Improved handling when the image adjustment cannot be applied.

Walkthrough

The brightness and contrast adjustment now builds a perceptual-space LUT in Python and applies it to the VALUE channel through drawable.curves_explicit. Parameter clamping, LUT transformations, failure handling, and undo/display behavior are defined in the updated function.

LUT-based adjustment
gimp-mcp-plugin.py
_adjust_brightness_contrast clamps brightness and contrast, generates a 256-entry LUT, applies it with drawable.curves_explicit, and raises an exception when the operation returns a falsy result.
