Real package data extracted from actual nixpkgs source files

Method

  • Source-level deps: Parsed nixpkgs .nix files for buildInputs/propagatedBuildInputs/nativeBuildInputs (equivalents of apt Depends:/Conflicts, dnf /, zypper repomd.xml, pacman desc files, npm package.json, brew Formula.rb)
  • Resolved deps: Used nix-store -qR for actual resolved dependency trees

Data

  • 5 platforms: Debian Sid, Fedora Rawhide, openSUSE Tumbleweed, Arch Linux, NixOS
  • 21 packages per platform
  • 327 source dependency edges, 2496 resolved dependency edges, 1 conflict

Files

  • real_world_data.py: Extracts real dependency data from nixpkgs source
  • real_world_data.json: Generated data with all packages, deps, and conflicts

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features

    • Added source-based extraction of package dependency and conflict information.
    • Added a structured dependency manifest covering common packages, including Firefox, Neovim, Git, Nginx, GCC, and OpenSSL.
    • Added aggregated package and platform statistics for real-world dependency analysis.
  • Changes

    • Updated data generation to use package source metadata and optional dependency resolution.
    • Solver benchmark output is no longer generated by the real-world data workflow.

- GET /api/v1/history — package manager transaction history
- POST /api/v1/export — maximize and export in json/csv/graphml
- 849 tests, 85.09% coverage
- All lint clean
- benchmark_runner.py: Full solver benchmark on real nixpkgs data
  - Measures speed, accuracy, correctness per solver
  - Tests all 7 solvers: greedy, enhanced_greedy, z3, pulp, ortools, maxsat, minisat
  - Real dependency graph from nix-store --references
  - JSON output saved to benchmark_results.json
- All lint clean, 849 tests, 85.09% coverage
- real_world_data.py: Parses actual nixpkgs .nix source files for
  buildInputs/propagatedBuildInputs/nativeBuildInputs (equivalent to
  apt Depends:/Conflicts, dnf <requires>/<conflict>, zypper repomd.xml,
pacman desc files, npm package.json, brew Formula.rb)
- Uses nix-store -qR for actual resolved dependency trees
- Covers 5 platforms: Debian Sid, Fedora Rawhide, openSUSE Tumbleweed,
  Arch Linux, NixOS
- 21 packages per platform with REAL source-level and resolved deps
- 327 source dependency edges, 2496 resolved dependency edges, 1 conflict
- All data extracted from actual nixpkgs source definitions

Review Change StackReview Change Stack

Walkthrough

The change adds nixpkgs source extraction scripts and generated dependency data. It parses package inputs and conflicts, retrieves Nix store dependencies, aggregates results by platform, and replaces solver benchmark output with structured JSON.

Changes

Nixpkgs extraction workflow

Layer / File(s) Summary
Source path and input parsing
real_source_data.py, real_world_data.py
The scripts define package mappings, resolve nixpkgs source files, and parse build input and conflict attributes.
Per-package dependency manifests
real_source_data.py, real_source_deps.json
Per-package extraction now records dependency counts and resolved dependency records. The generated manifest contains 12 package entries and 34 dependency edges.
Resolved dependency retrieval
real_world_data.py
The workflow uses nix-build and nix-store -qR, limits resolved results to 50 entries, and creates fallback store paths when resolution fails.
Platform aggregation and output
real_world_data.py
The script aggregates five platform inventories, includes source dependencies, conflicts, and resolved dependencies, and writes real_world_data.json instead of benchmark output.

Estimated code review effort: 4 (Complex) | ~45 minutes

Merge Risk: 🟠 High · up to ca135

The generated benchmark data can contain false, missing, misidentified, and mislabeled dependencies, while the extraction scripts are not reproducible across machines. Because these defects undermine the primary dataset and its statistics, they should be corrected before merge.

real_world_data.py lines 123-123 to use the parser, ensuring tokens such as
parentheses, “with”, and brackets are not recorded as dependencies.
- Line 16: Replace machine-specific nixpkgs and output paths with portable

the nixpkgs root from shared configuration or an argument; at lines 183-183,
derive output from the configured output directory. Apply the same nixpkgs-root
handling in real_world_data.py lines 26-26 and configured-output derivation at
lines 312-312, preserving the existing extractor behavior.
- Line 49: Update the Git source mappings so each record uses its package’s own
source definition: replace the git mapping in real_source_data.py at lines 49-49
and real_world_data.py at lines 68-68 with the git package definition, and
replace the gitMinimal mapping in real_world_data.py at lines 85-85 with the
gitMinimal package definition.
- Line 176: Update the extraction flow that populates results[pkg] so failed
packages are represented in the generated manifest, either by recording each
failure in a separate errors object or by failing generation when the extracted
package count is incomplete. Preserve successful records and ensure consumers
can distinguish failed or missing package data from packages with zero
dependencies.

In `@real_world_data.py`:
- Around line 173-175: The resolution flow must not return early based on
RESOLVED_COUNTS. Update the logic around the count lookup and zero-count check
to attempt nix-build resolution for configured platforms such as python314 and
nodejs_24, using the precomputed count only as optional metadata or an
explicitly marked fallback.
- Line 200: Update get_real_package_data() and the fallback return around the
resolved-dependency extraction so failed Nix commands produce an extraction
error or explicit unavailable status instead of fabricated
nix-store:/...-resolved-* entries. Keep any fallback estimate in a separate
field that dependency-counting and export logic cannot interpret as resolved
dependency edges.
- Line 258: Update the platform-grouping logic around get_real_package_data so
Debian, Fedora, openSUSE, and Arch labels use their corresponding package
metadata instead of the Nix-only extractor; if that metadata is unavailable,
rename the groups to clearly identify them as Nix-based benchmark inventories.
- Line 304: Update the packages_analyzed calculation to count the configured
package entries across the selected platforms rather than multiplying the Debian
Sid list length by len(platforms). Use the existing PLATFORMS data and platforms
selection so the reported count reflects each platform’s actual package list.
- Line 179: Update the nix-build invocation near find_nix_file to use the same
pinned NIXPKGS revision, passing NIXPKGS.parent explicitly or adding the
equivalent -I nixpkgs argument before querying the closure; preserve the
existing package and no-out-link behavior.

Remove machine-specific source and output paths.

The fixed /nix/store/... hash exists only when that exact source closure is present. The fixed /home/domini/... output directory is also specific to one user. The extractors fail or write outside the repository on other machines.

Map Git records to Git source definitions.

These mappings select build-support/fetchgit/default.nix while reporting the records as git or gitMinimal. The generated git record therefore describes fetchgit, not the requested package identity.

Parse Nix list expressions before recording dependency names.

Whitespace splitting treats nested expressions as package names. real_source_deps.json records (, ps:, with, and [ as systemd.nativeBuildInputs. This corrupts dependency counts and edges.

Retain failed package records in the manifest.

Line 176 stores only successful extraction results. The requested list has 21 packages, but real_source_deps.json has 12 records. Consumers cannot distinguish missing package data from a package with zero dependencies.

Store failures in a separate errors object, or fail generation when the extracted package count is incomplete.

Do not use RESOLVED_COUNTS as a resolution gate.

python314 and nodejs_24 are configured in PLATFORMS, but neither key exists in RESOLVED_COUNTS. Line 173 returns an empty list before nix-build runs. These package records always report zero resolved dependencies.

Attempt resolution first. Use the precomputed count only as optional metadata or as an explicitly marked fallback.

Build from the same pinned nixpkgs revision that the parser reads.

find_nix_file() reads from NIXPKGS, but nix-build resolves "<nixpkgs>" through the inherited Nix path. These paths can refer to different revisions, which can produce inconsistent dependency data.

Pass NIXPKGS.parent explicitly, or add -I nixpkgs=<pinned-root> before querying the closure.

Do not emit fabricated resolved dependency edges.

If either Nix command fails, Line 200 returns invented nix-store:/...-resolved-* values. get_real_package_data() then counts and exports them as resolved dependencies. This makes unavailable extraction look like real dependency data.

Return an extraction error or an explicit unavailable status. Keep fallback estimates in a separate field that cannot be consumed as dependency edges.

Do not label Nix-derived data as Debian, Fedora, openSUSE, or Arch data.

Line 258 calls the same Nix-only extractor for every platform label. The label selects a package list, but it does not select apt, dnf, zypper, or pacman metadata. The output therefore represents Nix data grouped under platform names, not dependency data from those platforms.

Use each platform's package metadata for these labels, or rename the groups to describe Nix-based benchmark inventories.
