get_adapter now returns None instead of raising ValueError. Legacy fallback methods preserved. 779 tests passing.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Enhancements

    • Package information retrieval now supports adapter-based package manager metadata, with fallback to existing detection when needed.
    • Package metadata can be converted between supported representations for more consistent package details.
  • Behavior Changes

    • Unknown package managers are handled without raising an immediate error.
    • Malformed JSON from Brew metadata requests now surfaces as an error instead of being silently handled.

Walkthrough

The change adds package metadata conversion and adapter-based package lookup with legacy fallback. Unknown adapters now return None. Several exception clauses changed syntax, including two changes that are invalid in Python 3.

Changes

Adapter lookup and fallback

Layer / File(s) Summary
Adapter metadata conversion and factory behavior
package_maximizer/adapters/__init__.py, tests/test_adapters_extra.py
PackageMetadata converts to PackageInfo. Unknown managers return None. Adapter fetchers update exception handling, and Brew allows JSONDecodeError to propagate.
Repository adapter integration and legacy fallback
package_maximizer/integrations/real_repo_integration.py
RealRepoIntegration attempts adapter-based metadata lookup and falls back to legacy package-manager logic when needed. PackageInfo converts to PackageMetadata.

Exception syntax updates

Layer / File(s) Summary
Solver and validation exception clauses
package_maximizer/solvers/__init__.py, package_maximizer/web/app.py
Exception clauses use comma-separated syntax. This syntax is invalid in Python 3.

The package may fail to start on supported Python versions, while valid manager selections and malformed Brew output can crash requests. These issues should be fixed before merge.

Replace comma-separated exception handlers with parenthesized tuples. pyproject.toml supports Python >=3.10, but comma-separated exception handlers are invalid syntax. They prevent both modules from importing. Update all seven cited handlers, such as except (subprocess.TimeoutExpired, FileNotFoundError): and except (ValueError, AttributeError):.

site:docs.python.org/3.14/reference/compound_stmts.html except multiple exception types parentheses omitted Python 3.14

💡 Result:

Python 3.14 allows omitting parentheses when catching multiple exception types, provided no as clause is used:

try:
    ...
except ValueError, TypeError:
    ...

With as, parentheses remain required:

except (ValueError, TypeError) as err:
    ...

This change applies to both except and except*, per PEP 758. [1]

Restore parenthesized exception tuples.

The project supports Python 3.10–3.12, and CI tests all t 8000 hree versions. These clauses fail during parsing on those versions. Change them to (KeyError, ImportError) and (TypeError, ValueError).

* feat/0.9.0: propose command + web API with automatic metadata extraction

- CLI propose command: auto-fetch depends/conflicts via adapters
- Web API /api/v1/propose: POST endpoint with metadata extraction
- Adapter fetch() method: subprocess + parse for APT, pip, pacman
- get_adapter() factory for manager-based adapter lookup
- 765 tests passing (8 new CLI tests, 5 new web API tests)

* style: black formatting for adapters, solvers, web app

* fix/0.9.0: Python 2 except syntax → parenthesized (cherry-pick from 0.8.0)
