Fixes #4733

Problem

The docs show running a custom playbook from a sequence with verify verify_absent.yml. With no default verify.yml, it was skipped:

WARNING [default > verify] Executed: Missing playbook (Remove from test_sequence to suppress)

The ansible verifier checked only for the default playbook, so it returned before provisioner.verify(), which already handles action_args.

Change

Report a missing playbook only when no playbook was passed either.

Testing

  • test_ansible_execute_with_custom_playbook fails on main and passes with this change.
  • test_ansible_execute_reports_missing_playbook covers the case that should still report it.
  • A real molecule test with test_sequence: [verify verify_absent.yml] printed Missing playbook on main. With this change, the custom playbook ran and verify reported Successful.

pytest tests/unit (896 passed, 6 skipped before this PR's last lint-only edit), ruff, mypy on the changed file, and prek on the changed files all pass.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes
    • Ansible verification now uses playbook arguments supplied at execution time, even when no verify playbook is configured.
    • When no playbook is configured or supplied, verification continues to report “Missing playbook” and does not run.

Walkthrough

When Ansible.execute receives a playbook argument, it calls provisioner.verify with that argument even if the configured verify playbook is absent. Without an argument, it records the missing-playbook result and does not call the verifier.

Changes: Verify playbook execution

Layer / File(s) Summary
Handle explicit and missing playbooks
src/molecule/verifier/ansible.py, tests/unit/verifier/test_ansible.py
The missing-playbook check now applies only when action_args is empty. Tests cover forwarding an explicit playbook and recording the missing-playbook result when no playbook is provided.

The ansible verifier checked for the default verify playbook before
calling the provisioner, so "verify verify_absent.yml" in a sequence was
skipped as "Missing playbook" when no verify.yml existed. Only report it
missing when no playbook was passed either.
