Description

Before: the navigation rail listed 18 items in one column, split only by unnamed lines, with Costs among the everyday pages.

After: the items sit in four groups, each named above its first item: what people use every day (Home, Library, Import, Chat and the rest), Explore (Entities, Topics, Graph, Podcasts, Reports), Automate (Pipelines, Routines, Extensions, Sensors or Sources) and Manage (Costs, Analytics, Settings, Admin). Costs moves to Manage. Collapsed to icons, the names become lines. Items are 32px tall rather than 34px, so the names add about 20px to the rail; at 1366x768 every item and Collapse still fit, and the phone drawer fits through Admin.

How: each item in nav-config.ts carries a group instead of a divider flag, and nav.tsx draws a group's name where it starts.

Motivation and Context

Adeel asked to simplify the interface and settings; this is the third step after #390 (settings groups and Find) and #392 (folds).

Types of changes

  • Bug fix (non-breaking change which fixes an issue)
  • New feature (non-breaking change which adds functionality)
  • Breaking change (fix or feature that would cause existing functionality to change; ! in the title)

Checklist:

  • The title is a Conventional Commit.
  • My code follows the code style of this project (make hooks checks it on commit).
  • I added or updated tests.
  • My change requires documentation updates, and I have updated docs/ accordingly.
  • Users need more than the title to understand it, so I wrote it under ## Unreleased in CHANGELOG.md. (n/a)

Done questions (AGENTS.md)

  • Goal: the third step of "simplify the interface and settings"; merged on green.
  • Agents: n/a, layout only; nothing an agent reaches changes.
  • Zero setup: nothing new.
  • Fewest clicks: no journey takes more (local clicks survey on computer and phone, all "ok"); no item moves behind a click.
  • Configurable: n/a, no new setting.
  • Light: n/a.
  • Private and secure: n/a, no new surface.
  • Cost: n/a.
  • User decides: no default changes; every item stays where members and admins saw it, only Costs moves down.
  • Upgrades: n/a, nothing stored changes.
  • Honest: n/a.
  • Tests and docs updated (navigation.test.ts, nav-groups.test.tsx; docs/frontend.md "Navigation").
  • Open standards: n/a; no new dependency.
  • Reported in the project thread.

The nav rail's 18 items sit in four groups, each named above its first item: what people use every day, Explore (Entities, Topics, Graph, Podcasts, Reports), Automate (Pipelines, Routines, Extensions, Sensors or Sources) and Manage (Costs, Analytics, Settings, Admin). Costs moves from the first group to Manage. Collapsed to icons, the names are lines. Items are 32px rather than 34px, so the names add about 20px to the rail.
