Description

Before: the web clipper (extensions/browser) was invisible to Nx, so make affected and CI's Other projects job skipped it.

After: it is the Nx project clipper. pnpm exec nx run-many -t test build -p clipper installs (only when the lockfile changed), runs its tests and builds every browser target with the manifest check, and CI's Other projects runs the same whenever a change affects it. The Browser extension, Edge and Safari workflows are unchanged and still keep the zips with each run.

Motivation and Context

Follow-up to #303: fold each project into Nx as it lands on main.

How

extensions/browser/project.json: install runs npm ci --include=dev unless node_modules/.package-lock.json is newer than package-lock.json; test (npm test) and build (npm run check, outputs dist/, EXT_VERSION as an input) depend on it. Locally: 22 tests pass, chrome/edge/safari build; a second run skips the install and replays from the cache. nx show projects --affected for this branch: docs, clipper. docs/contributing.md and docs/web-clipper.md say how to run it.

Types of changes

  • Bug fix (non-breaking change which fixes an issue)
  • New feature (non-breaking change which adds functionality)
  • Breaking change (fix or feature that would cause existing functionality to change; ! in the title)

Checklist:

  • The title is a Conventional Commit.
  • My code follows the code style of this project (make hooks checks it on commit).
  • I added or updated tests. (n/a: runs the clipper's existing tests in CI.)
  • My change requires documentation updates, and I have updated docs/ accordingly.
  • Users need more than the title to understand it, so I wrote it under ## Unreleased in CHANGELOG.md. (n/a: contributor tooling.)

Done questions (AGENTS.md)

  • Goal: merged on green CI. (Merging on green.)
  • Agents: one Nx command, plain output.
  • Zero setup: n/a for the install; the install target fetches the clipper's dependencies itself.
  • Fewest clicks: one command.
  • Configurable: n/a.
  • Light: n/a, dev tooling only.
  • Private and secure: no new surface.
  • Cost: n/a.
  • User decides: the clipper's workflows and defaults unchanged.
  • Upgrades: n/a.
  • Honest: docs describe what is merged.
  • Tests run, docs updated.
  • Open: no new dependencies.
  • Reported in the project thread.

extensions/browser gets a project.json (Nx project `clipper`): `install`
runs `npm ci` when the lockfile is newer than node_modules, and `test` and
`build` (every browser target, with the manifest check) depend on it. CI's
Other projects job now runs them whenever a change affects the clipper; the
browser workflows keep building and keeping the zips as before.
