Description

Before: the assistant couldn't read or write notes, nobody filed them, and a note was text only.

After:

  • The assistant treats notes as its notebook. It gets four chat tools (find, read, write and update notes), looks there first and writes what it learns, linked with @ and #. Writing needs editor access and takes effect at once.
  • Notes nobody filed are filed in Projects, Areas, Resources or Archives by a decision model (Jev, Laya or the LLM) once their summary is written. When the model isn't sure, its suggestion waits on the note as a "File under X" button. The Settings > AI switch "Organise notes" is on by default.
  • Every note can switch between Page and Canvas. Canvas is BlockSuite's edgeless board, with shapes, connectors, mind maps, frames and drawing. When the assistant or the API changes the text without the editor's state, the editor imports the new Markdown on open and keeps the drawings (doc_stale).
  • The editor saves only after someone actually types, draws, pastes or drops, so opening a page no longer saves it.

Motivation and Context

Notes module: "primary user is the AI assistant", "self-organised by the AI using PARA", and Adeel's follow-up "allow other features of this editor like diagram, endless pages". Two commits: the assistant tools with PARA filing, then the canvas.

Types of changes

  • Bug fix (non-breaking change which fixes an issue)
  • New feature (non-breaking change which adds functionality)
  • Breaking change (fix or feature that would cause existing functionality to change; ! in the title)

Checklist:

  • The title is a Conventional Commit.
  • My code follows the code style of this project (make hooks checks it on commit).
  • I added or updated tests.
  • My change requires documentation updates, and I have updated docs/ accordingly.
  • Users need more than the title to understand it, so I wrote it under ## Unreleased in CHANGELOG.md.

Checked locally on the previous base (#126): the full backend suite passed (549, with the known LibreOffice conversion test deselected), along with ruff, tsc and eslint. The OpenAPI client was regenerated with make openapi. In a browser, drawing a shape on the canvas saves, and replacing the Markdown keeps the shapes.

Four chat tools keep notes as the assistant's notebook: it looks there
first and writes what it learns, linked with @ and #. Writing needs
editor access and takes effect at once.

Notes nobody filed are filed in projects, areas, resources or archives by
a decision model (or the LLM) once their summary is written; when it isn't
sure, its suggestion waits on the note (ai.organise_notes, on by default).
