Description

Before: an action that asks first (posting to the family room) or waits for its time passed nothing on, so the workflow engine marked its node done in the run's trace. The canvas showed a green dot for a post that had not been sent.

After: the trace marks such a node waiting (asks first) or scheduled (waits for its time). The canvas draws them with a gold dot titled "Would ask you first in the last try" or "Would wait for its time in the last try", and the node's settings say so too.

Motivation and Context

Found while writing the M12 journey test (email → approval → timeline): the run's own status was waiting, but its trace said the waiting node was done. Workflow studio M11/M12.

Types of changes

  • Bug fix (non-breaking change which fixes an issue)
  • New feature (non-breaking change which adds functionality)
  • Breaking change (fix or feature that would cause existing functionality to change; ! in the title)

Checklist:

  • The title is a Conventional Commit.
  • My code follows the code style of this project (make hooks checks it on commit).
  • I added or updated tests (test_automation_nodes.py, test_automation_runs.py now assert waiting and scheduled).
  • My change requires documentation updates: docs/automations.md lists the trace statuses.
  • CHANGELOG: n/a, the title says it.

Local CI (ci/local-ci.sh HEAD --jobs backend,server,frontend,pre-commit): FastAPI embedded pass, FastAPI server pass, Next.js pass, pre-commit pass.

Done questions (AGENTS.md)

  • Goal: the trace tells the truth about what waits; merged on green.
  • Agents: agents read the same trace over the API and MCP.
  • Zero setup: nothing to install or set.
  • Fewest clicks: n/a, no new steps.
  • Configurable: n/a, no settings.
  • Light: n/a, no new work.
  • Private and secure: n/a, no new surface.
  • Cost: no model calls.
  • User decides: it now shows plainly that the action waits for the person's pick.
  • Upgrades: n/a, older runs keep their stored traces; new runs use the new statuses, which the UI reads.
  • Honest: the trace no longer calls a waiting action done.
  • Tests updated, docs updated; no generated files change.
  • Open: n/a.
  • Reported in the project thread.
  • Reuse: the existing intents box and canvas status dots.

…, not done

An action that asks first or waits for its time passed nothing on, and the
workflow engine called its node done. finish() now marks it waiting or
scheduled, and the canvas shows those as would ask you first / would
wait for its time.
