The values automations keep between runs ([Saved variables](automations.md#saved-variables)): an automation's own,
or a namespace's, which every automation working there reads. `GET` answers `{"vars": [{name, value, untrusted,
updated_at, updated_by}]}` by name; `untrusted` says a run set it from text from outside Lens. `PUT {"vars": {name:
value}}` sets several at once (`null` clears one) and answers the same list. An automation's are for admins and
whoever may change it (it works only in namespaces they edit); a namespace's are read by its readers and changed by
its editors. 404 for an automation you can't see, 400 for a bad name (lowercase letters, digits and `_`, up to 40),
a value over 16 KB, or past 100 variables.

### Saved variables

An automation keeps values between runs as `vars.<name>`: a counter, when it last alerted, the last ten senders. Each
is the automation's own, or its namespace's, which every automation working there reads (an automation's own wins on
a name). A run reads them as they were when it started; a `set_variable` node changes them for the runs after it and
gives what it set as `steps.<node>.value` (and `.previous`) for the nodes after it in the same run.

The `set_variable` action (group Run, routine: it changes nothing outside the automation) takes:

| Param | |
| --- | --- |
| `name` | lowercase letters, digits and `_`, starting with a letter, up to 40 |
| `op` | `set` (default) to `value`, `increment` by `value` (a number, default 1), `append` `value` to a list of the last 100, or `clear` |
| `value` | any JSON up to 16 KB, often a template: <code>"{{ event.object.from &#124; emails &#124; first }}"</code> |
| `scope` | `automation` (default) or `namespace` |
| `namespace` | for `scope: namespace`, its id; the automation's only namespace when left out. Changing a namespace's variables needs the automation's owner to be an editor there |

Two runs changing one variable at once both count: a write that loses the race reads the value again (up t 8000 o five
times). A scope keeps up to 100 variables. A variable set from a template that reads what the run got from outside
Lens (its activities, earlier steps or such variables) is marked so, and prompts then wrap it as outside text; other
variables stay as written. People change them with
`GET`/`PUT /api/v1/automations/{id}/vars` and `/api/v1/namespaces/{name}/automation-vars` ([API](api.md#automations)),
and agents with the `automation_vars` and `set_automation_vars` MCP tools.
