A Python MCP server that exposes tools to Large Language Models (LLMs) using the Model Context Protocol (MCP).
- FastMCP server with example tools (add, divide, greeting, GitHub issue simulation)
- VS Code integration with both FastMCP and GitHub MCP servers
- Docker support
- Python 3.11+
- Docker (optional)
- VS Code with Copilot chat (optional)
- GitHub Personal Access Token (for GitHub MCP)

cd github-mcp-repo-create-test
python -m venv venv
source venv/bin/activate # On Windows: venv\Scripts\activate
pip install -r requirements.txt
# Start the server
python server.pydocker build -t fast-mcp-server .
docker run -p 8000:8000 fast-mcp-serverThis repository includes configuration for two MCP servers:
- FastMCP Server: Connects to http://127.0.0.1:8000/sse
- GitHub MCP Server: Uses Docker to run the official GitHub MCP server
To use in VS Code:
- Install the Copilot chat
- Start your desired server(s)
- Open command palette → "MCP: Connect to Server"
- Select the server from the list (provide GitHub token if using GitHub server)
The .vscode/mcp.json file configures:
When connected to MCP servers, GitHub Copilot can:
- Discover available tools from connected servers
- Call appropriate tools when you request tasks
- Process results and respond accordingly
For example, asking Copilot to "create an issue" will trigger GitHub API tools, while "add 5 and 7" will use the local FastMCP server's add function.
add(a: int, b: int) → int: Simple additiondivide(a: int, b: int) → float: Division operationget_greeting(name: str) → str: Personalized greetingadd_issue_comment(...): GitHub issue comment simulation
Provides tools for GitHub operations like:
- Creating issues/PRs
- Managing repositories
- Searching code
- File operations
