🐛 Open Source Contributions

What kind of contributor am I? I ship root-cause fixes with regression tests to production OSS — not typo patches. Every contribution below was diagnosed from source, verified against the real runtime, and independently reviewed by an AI code reviewer before a human looked at it.

🐛 Karakeep — Highlight Popover Fix

PR Issue Tests

Anchoring a position: fixed popover inside a transformed dialog

A CSS transform makes an element the containing block for position: fixed descendants. Karakeep's preview modal centers its DialogContent with translate-x-[-50%] translate-y-[-50%], so the highlight popover's anchor resolved against the dialog box instead of the viewport — landing the popover directly on the user's text selection.

Root cause — packages/shared-react/lib/highlightPosition.ts Fix — resolve the anchor against its real containing block (getFixedPositionOffsetParent), then convert the selection rect into that ancestor's coordinate space Verification — real Chromium + real Radix Popover primitives; 4/4 geometric assertions Review — an AI reviewer found a second, unfixed call site (the saved-highlight branch); fixed in a follow-up commit with 4 more regression tests

🔍 The Technique I Use

Finding high-signal bugs that maintainers accept:

  1. Scan — read CONTRIBUTING.md / AGENTS.md and the issue tracker for confirmed, reproducible bugs
  2. Root-cause — read the actual source and the dependency internals (e.g. @floating-ui/dom, Radix) until the mechanism is unambiguous
  3. Prove it — write a failing test and a real-browser reproduction before touching the fix
  4. Fix minimally — one root cause, no drive-by refactors, no new dependencies
  5. Verify — typecheck → lint → format → test → frozen-lockfile install → real-browser assertion
  6. Respond — address every reviewer finding in a follow-up commit, not in the PR description

"The best PR is the one where the maintainer's only comment is LGTM."

🧪 How I verify a fix before opening a PR

A passing unit test tells you very little. For UI and positioning bugs I build a real-browser harness that exercises the actual production code path:

// Legacy behaviour: the anchor is displaced by exactly the dialog origin
[ok] legacy: the anchor is displaced by exactly the dialog origin
[ok] legacy: the REAL Radix popover covers the text selection (the reported bug)
[ok] fixed: the anchor lands exactly on the selection centre
[ok] fixed: the REAL Radix popover no longer covers the text selection

The legacy branch is asserted as a bug — so the test proves the bug existed, not just that the new code happens to be self-consistent.

🧭 How I choose which project to contribute to

I score targets on four axes before writing any code:

Signal Why it matters
Reproducible bug reports A confirmed bug is already agreed-upon work — no design debate
Merges external PRs Maintainers who actually review outside contributions
An AI code reviewer is wired in My PR gets a structured first review before a human sees it
A public CONTRIBUTING.md with real rules The repo wants contributions and states the bar

📝 Contribution checklist I run before every PR

  • Read CONTRIBUTING.md and the repo's AGENTS.md
  • Searched for duplicate issues and duplicate PRs
  • Root-caused it from source, not from the issue text
  • Failing regression test written first
  • Minimal diff — no drive-by refactors, no new dependencies
  • typecheck / lint / format / test all green
  • pnpm install --frozen-lockfile still succeeds
  • Verified in the real runtime, not just the test harness
  • PR description explains the root cause, not just the diff
  • LLM-use disclosure included, as the repo's template requires
