Paula Dieli shared thisThe make-or-break factors for global growth usually aren’t the ones on the slides. They’re the fundamentals underneath: paying people correctly in every country, hiring in new markets without unwanted legal exposure, and scaling without compliance risk compounding. That’s what Remote was built to solve. Today we’re stepping into our next chapter as the leading global payroll and employment infrastructure — and opening our platform so any company, tool, or AI agent can build on the foundation we’ve spent seven years creating.

Paula Dieli shared thisHaving worked alongside Sofia S. for many years, I’ve seen firsthand the vision and technical leadership they bring to the table. I couldn't be more excited to see them take on the CTO role and lead Remote into this next chapter. Well deserved!Paula Dieli shared thisA doctor is our new CTO... Here's the story. In May 2020, I was CTO at Remote. It was mid-pandemic and we had started growing our engineering team. I had budget for one frontend developer and had already found my hire. I was prepping a job offer when I realized I had another interview for the same role within hours. I kept the meeting because the candidate's background perplexed me: first job listed as "Paediatrician". I met Sofia and the first thing I asked was "how does a doctor end up becoming a Frontend engineer?" She said: "I tried, I liked, I kept going". By the end of the hiring process, I knew I had two problems. 1. I was the one being interviewed by her and I failed. Sofia told me directly she wasn't super convinced on joining us; and 2. I now had two fantastic candidates but could only hire one person for the role. I called Job van der Voort (my co-founder) after the meeting and told him, "we have budget for one engineer, but I found two. The foundational team needs to be epic and we need to find a way to afford them both." He immediately said "do it, we'll find a way". I left out the part where I still had to convince her to join. It took a few more calls with Sofia and reaching out to people in our common network to convince her but I finally managed to hire her. Being a doctor is one of the hardest jobs in the world, high impact, often well compensated, lots of risk, and yet she decided to take up another very complicated craft, Frontend Engineering. Why? Because she liked it and no one could tell her otherwise. This determination struck a chord with me. She also aced our technical challenges and came back with feedback on how to improve them. Year after year, Sofia kept taking on more; going deeper and wider. She went from Frontend engineer to Tech Lead > Team Lead > Engineering Manager > Director > VP of Engineering. The VP of Engineering role came naturally to Sofia. She is a born leader and technically brilliant, but above all else, she cares deeply. She cares for the team, the company, our users, our customers - no rock left unturned. Where to now? Meanwhile, as co-founder, I go where the business needs me, from CTO to COO, and eventually, to President. Over time, as Remote grew, I took on more responsibilities and engineering became just one of the many pillars I was overseeing directly. I realized "overseeing directly" was mostly me clinging to my past CTO role. Sofia had taken over entirely, and garnered unanimous trust from our whole executive team. AI is rapidly changing everything, Remote went from "engineers can build" to "everyone builds". Every team is AI-pilled. It's a significant change in mentality and pace, requiring a fundamental embrace of this new reality. So, the decision was clear. We promoted the person who lives by "you can just do things", long before AI made it a slogan. Sofia S. is now CTO at Remote! Can't wait to see how she makes the role her own. As for me? Stay tuned to find out…

Paula Dieli reposted thisPaula Dieli reposted thisBig news. We've acquired Bravas. Managing identity and devices for global teams is one of those problems that sits right at the critical intersection of security, compliance, and operations. It is one of those challenges that compounds as you scale across borders, and one that global teams have had to solve with too many disconnected tools for too long. Bravas has built something impressive. We are excited to welcome the team to Remote and keep building toward a world where global teams have everything they need in one place.

Paula Dieli posted thisAI in operations gets talked about a lot but rarely shows up in the day-to-day. What’s been different for us in Remote’s EOR Operations team is a simple shift: we’ve stopped treating AI as a separate initiative, and now treat it as a foundational part of how the team works. That’s led to some interesting changes: ⚙️ Operational teams building their own AI-supported workflows 🌍 More consistent decisions across complex, multi-country scenarios 🧠 Knowledge becoming instantly accessible instead of held by a few individuals What’s surprised me most is where the momentum is coming from — within operations by people closest to the problems, using accessible AI tools to solve them directly. And it’s no longer experimental — it’s become a integral part of how we do our work: ⏱️ Less time navigating process and repetitive work 📚 Less reliance on tribal knowledge 🎯 More focus on judgement, edge cases, and customer impact This is what it looks like when AI moves from concept to capability within operations. What are you building today?!

Paula Dieli posted thisI get some funny but understandable reactions 🙀 when I tell people that at Remote, where I work, all employees work remotely. "I'd miss being around other people" is a common one and to that I say that it's mostly about being able to choose the people I spend time with. Our monthly lunches 🥖 for any employees who can attend has been a nice addition to my social calendar. And my recent annual leadership offsite was a wonderful opportunity to see my team face to face again and meet a few folks for the first time. The building manager where I live 🏢 is always up for a quick chat (how else would I know what goes on in my neighborhood!), and I smile at the regulars that I pass on my runs around my local park. I even chat briefly with the hardworking DHL person who regularly picks up and drops off the employment documents I'm required to send and receive as a part of my job. I think I can even count him as a friend since he finally accepted my offer of a steaming espresso ☕ though, if I'm honest, it had less to do with my sparkly personality and more to do with the fact that the temps here in Paris are hovering at -1°C 🥶 🤷♀️ Whatever the reason, it’s one more bit of proof that remote work doesn’t limit connection—it simply reshapes it.

Paula Dieli posted thisYesterday I joined the Maxon program management team offsite, led by the eminently talented leader and Maxon’s VP of Program Management & Business Operations, Beatrice Billard. I shared some of the challenges I’ve faced building program management teams from the ground up 🛠️ and how I met those challenges. I also shared some best practices around 🪴 skill building, and especially how to make time for it when you’re that person that’s always worrying about everyone and everything else (AKA doing risk management!). The program managers asked thoughtful questions and we tackled meaty topics such as handling change and directing the inevitable pivots ↪️ as a result of the many external and internal forces companies face at ever increasing rates. I always love hanging with likeminded folks so it was a blast! Thanks Maxon team for having me!

Paula Dieli liked thisPaula Dieli liked thisI would rather have a motivated team member working 30 hours a week at 100% capacity/intensity than somebody being forced to work "40 hours" at less intensity, just to tick the box of showing up and working a standard working week. We hire humans, but we've been trained to think about people like robots that function exactly the same from 9 to 5 or 6 (depending on your country rules ;-)). Performance and showing up daily at work shows up as a wave, not a flat line. Life is a wave, of ups and downs. Real people bring their real selves to work. Their health, their personal stuff, whatever they're going through. If one of your top people is going through something (a separation, caring for a family member, a child that needs some extra supports), recognise it. Talk to them, encourage them to take a beat, and put on their own oxygen mask. Don't bash them over the head with expectations of consistent 100% output. As I see it, this is the real job: balancing the needs of the business with the needs of real humans.

Paula Dieli liked thisPaula Dieli liked thisToday is my last day at Remote. I've been thinking about the best way to describe these 5+ years, and the analogy came to me from close to home. When I joined Remote, my daughter was 7 months old. As I’m leaving, she turns 6 in less than two months. My journey at Remote is an entire lifetime for her — and, in a way, it feels the same for me 💜 I always say you want to leave on a high note, when things are bright and exciting — and that's exactly how I feel today. From growing the company from 200 to 2,000+ people to vibe-coding our own ATS, Remote has never given me a dull moment. I'm forever grateful for every opportunity I've had here! This week, our ATS went live — 4 months of work, 7 People & TA professionals, 0 coding experience. What felt completely impossible at the start of the year is now our reality. This is what Remote is about: People, Engineering, Legal, Security, and many others coming together and locking arms. Madeline Grecek I have to tag you here — I couldn't have wished for a better partner in crime, though this turned out to be far more than a crime: it's changing the way People teams work and are perceived. 🕵 🤝 As I wrap up my chapter here, there are hundreds of names I'd want to tag. Thank you Job van der Voort and Marcelo Lebre for founding the company that stays true to its values, does the right things in the right way, and never stops caring about its employees and customers while doing crazy ambitious things. A BIG thank you to my one and only TA & People teams — I'm so lucky to have you in my life!✨ Thank you Nadia Vatalidis (she/her) for bringing me to Remote and for being my best sounding board. Thank you to my wonderful peers Regina Caldas, Andrina Laflamme-Fillion, Madeline Grecek (again!) with whom I always knew we could figure anything out — and do it with a smile. Thank you to my amazing manager Barbara Matthews for challenging and stretching me in directions I never expected, and for being the strongest voice and supporter of our team. And there are so many more of you — those still at Remote and those crushing it elsewhere — thank you for being with me through these years. What's next? AI, scaling, remote — the words you hear from me all the time. Stay tuned! 🚀

Paula Dieli liked thisPaula Dieli liked thisRemote being present in very wholesome ways for some of life’s hard moments. For the past 7 months I’ve been the carer for my wife while she undergoes treatment for Breast Cancer, the flexibility of working at Remote has allowed me to be every appointment and chemo session. Yesterday was surgery day (last one hopefully) and we arrived home to this surprise, to say this gave her a big smile is an understatement. It shows the humanity and compassion companies can have. On a personal note, I wanted to thank all the coworkers that were present throughout: Ricardo De Oliveira Beatriz T. Marques Tamzyn Eady Antonio Silva José Matos Kerollaine Lauto Oliveira (and many more that would make writing everyone a never ending post)

Paula Dieli liked thisBack in early 2022, our Operations leadership pitched a business case to build a a separate Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) function from scratch to ensure safe working conditions for our employees. Because Remote primarily supports office and remote workers, it might have been easy for a company of our size or industry to brush OHS aside. But at Remote, adhering to local labor laws and protecting employees is non-negotiable. Leading this effort gave me an incredible opportunity to sharpen my strategic planning and execution while building a new team. It was a steep learning curve. Together, we began navigating a complex global landscape - tackling everything from intricate Italian OHS regulations to Bulgaria’s insistence on workplace photos. Over time, we grew from 0 to a team of 6, and we are still learning every single day. Navigating this space has also broadened my own understanding of global operations. It’s underscored the need for modern H&S frameworks designed also for remote workers - ones that address psychosocial well-being and ergonomics alongside traditional physical safety. As we continue scaling our operations at Remote, we’re looking for fresh minds who are eager to build alongside us. If this space excites you or if you know someone who would be a great fit, we’d love for you to check out the role and share it: https://lnkd.in/gAaZeDkF 💜 #hiring #occupationalhealth&safety #remote #remotejobs #healthandsafety
