🛰️ Thales Alenia Space Unveils New Cutting-Edge Satellite Flight Operations Rooms in Cannes! Today, Hervé Derrey, CEO of Thales Alenia Space, alongside company executives and dedicated operational teams, unveiled new state-of-the-art satellite flight operations rooms. These advanced facilities embody our unwavering commitment to innovation and the future growth of these mission-critical activities that drive the success of #satellite #operations for customers around the globe. Controlling satellites through radio frequence links might sound futuristic—but behind it lies a web of complex infrastructure and unmatched expertise! Our flight operations teams play a vital role at every decisive moment in a satellite’s lifecycle. From the intense, high-stakes moments of launcher separation, just a few hundreds of kilometers above Earth, through to final orbital placement (up to 36,000 km for geostationary satellites) and seamless handover to clients—they are there every step of the way. And because a mission doesn’t end at this step, they provide continuous operational support in orbit, safeguarding satellite performance for up to 15 years and managing reorbiting procedures to ensure reliability throughout the mission lifespan. Key features of these new facilities include:  • Launch & Early Orbit Phase (LEOP) rooms spanning over 300 m², dedicated to managing critical satellites deployment phases. • A multi-mission control room capable of simultaneously overseeing up to four satellites already in orbit.  • In-Orbit Support rooms providing ongoing engineering assistance and real-time support throughout the entire satellite contractual mission duration.  • A state-of-the-art Data Center designed to address evolving needs in data processing, storage, security, and cybersecurity. It was also a great opportunity to extend our warmest thanks to our sister JV Telespazio, particularly the teams based in Fucino, with whom the Flight Operations teams in Cannes have been working hand in hand for 20 years. The Space Business Catalyst by Thales Alenia Space, in line with its mission of exploring and shaping new sustainable markets through supporting the emergence of new ecosystems, was proud to support again the World Satellite Business Week Pitch-Off competition organized by NovaSpace last week in Paris. Having closely engaged with startups through the larger innovation activities of Thales Alenia Space for more than 10 years now, our Space Business Catalyst works with more than 200 startups from around the world, using various tools including investment by Thales Corporate Ventures (most recently used for SpaceLocker as announced at the International Space Summit), but also a unique industrial acceleration program focused on moving from PPT to space.   Among the six short-listed startups out of an impressive lineup of projects from around the world, we eventually awarded the Space Business Catalyst prize to TakeMe2Space, an Indian startup which impressed us by their speed of growth combined to their vision towards orbital compute, an emerging field in which Thales Alenia Space is very active. TakeMe2Space will have the opportunity to join our industrial acceleration program in Turin or Toulouse while the Space Business Catalyst continues to thrive including through its alumni and partners! Last week,Thales Alenia Space was selected to provide the digital and secure payloads for 330 IRIS2 satellites in low Earth orbit (LEO). The IRIS2 secure connectivity constellation will comprise, to date, a total of 348 satellites, including 330 in LEO & 18 in medium Earth orbit. Today,two projects led by Thales Alenia Space, as Consortium Lead, have been selected by the European Space Agency(ESA) within the framework of the IRIS2 Low-LEO Pre-operational & De-risking Activities Consolidation Phase, part of the ESA Programme Related to EU Secure Connectivity. This initiative brings together several consortia to develop novel mission concepts addressing services of interest for the Low-LEO layer of the European IRIS2 program, as well as related architectural definition & design aspects, aiming for in-orbit deployment by 2028/2029. Great emphasis is placed on collaboration between leading satellite manufacturers & the European supply chain, including SMEs & mid-caps, to drive innovation & technological advancements, while strengthening Europe’s industrial competitiveness & technological leadership in space. Thales Alenia Space in Italy leads the OLIMPOS (Orbital Layer for Infrastructure Monitoring & Protected Operations Services) project. It focuses on future-oriented direct-to-device/Internet of Things use cases, delivering different classes of service that include monitoring & control of critical infrastructure, tactical communications+command and control in contested environments, as well as emergency communications in crisis areas. The consortium includes Leonardo, Telespazio, Azcom Technology,& Integrated Systems Development S.A.(ISD). Thales Alenia Space in Spain leads the project called “Next Generation Direct-To-Device Payload and Services,”which addresses mission concepts for future governmental D2D services(in particular protected operational communications for force deployments) in X-band, with an architecture based on 5G NTN with an onboard 5G base station (gNB). The consortium includes Universidad Politécnica de Madrid(UPM). In addition, Thales Alenia Space in Italy participates in the project called “Poseidon”,led by OHB Italia, an advanced system providing secure, global Maritime Operations and Safety services by integrating VDES,visible & thermal imaging and RF sensing technologies.Thales Alenia Space in Spain also participates in the project called “SELENE”, led by Indra Space, an end-to-end mission designed to demonstrate future Governmental and Direct-to-Device service capabilities enabled by 5G NTN technologies in S-band, with a strong focus on secure & resilient communications. 🛰️The European Space Agency (ESA) has successfully demonstrated the transmission of 5G positioning signals from the Thales Alenia Space-built Celeste IOD-2 satellite in low Earth orbit and their reception by the Test User Segment in Toulouse, marking a key step toward integrating the worlds of satellite navigation and mobile communications.   As reported by ESA: this first-of-its-kind in-orbit demonstration represents an important milestone for positioning using 5G Non-Terrestrial Networks (NTN) and paves the way for future satellite systems capable of delivering both connectivity and positioning services. The #InternationalSpaceSummit, held in Paris on September 9 and 10, was a one-of-a-kind event that brought together the international space ecosystem: head of States and Governments from around the world, astronauts, space agencies, telecom operators, space and defense industry leaders.   It was a unique opportunity to address the future of the European space sector, from strategic autonomy to competitiveness and innovation.   Our company’s CEO Herve DERREY and executives Giampiero Di Paolo, Delphine Knab and Benoît couture, shared their insights, alongside high representatives from the space sectors, during panels addressing European competitiveness and global competition, lunar exploration, the emergence of Direct-to-Device technology, and connectivity from space.   This unique event also provided a great opportunity for us to meet with numerous delegations of our customers and partners and to engage with international media.   Finally, the summit led to the official signing of the contract for the European IRIS2 constellation, which will play a key role in strengthening Europe’s space sovereignty & autonomy.
