The service has been completely impersonal. I’ve paid my bill every month yet when I try to schedule an appointment, I get the runaround end up having to wait on hold for an hour or have somebody call me back an hour later the representatives are obviously outsourced from another country and have difficulty comprehending and understanding or relating to the conversation and they have been able to provide no real updates except for that their vendors which is Sears, which I won’t be using either is consistently rescheduling they’ve rescheduled three times with no reasoning and the latest one the third reschedule they had me waiting and at the end of the timeframe, then notified me that they wouldn’t be able to make it tried to converse with their AI back-and-forth, which was completely confused saying that the technician was on the way and then the following message you’ve been canceled and then confirmed you’re the next stop so all this to say I will be discontinuing my service with the American home shield after my contract is up and moving to another company that’s able to provide Quick a reliable honest and trustworthy
Offered Only $685 for a Failed Furnace
I am leaving this review to warn other homeowners about American Home Shield’s (AHS) deceptive advertising regarding their HVAC coverage. A major factor in my decision to purchase and renew the Shield Gold Plan was their prominent advertisement of a $5,000 HVAC system replacement coverage limit.
In January 2026, my gas furnace completely failed. An AHS-assigned contractor confirmed it required a full replacement. AHS assured me the furnace was a covered item, yet they subsequently hit me with an exorbitant "non-covered out-of-pocket cost" totaling $4,630. Realizing I was essentially being asked to pay for the entire replacement myself, I demanded to know exactly how much AHS was contributing. An AHS representative explicitly told me I was "not privy to that information" unless I requested a "cash in lieu" payment.
When I requested the cash-in-lieu amount, AHS offered a measly $685.96. When pressed on this massive discrepancy, AHS gave conflicting stories: first claiming it was their "discounted wholesale volume price," then claiming it was what they would have paid to replace it, and finally claiming it was based on a specific plan calculation—which they could not actually point out or show me in my contract.
I have already escalated this matter to my State Attorney General and the Department of Insurance. AHS responded to the state regulatory complaint with a boilerplate brush-off, stating that the $5,000 limit is merely a "maximum ceiling" and they are not obligated to apply it.
AHS is intentionally misleading consumers. They advertise a $5,000 limit to win your business, but use hidden, shifting math and un-provable "wholesale prices" to cap their actual payout at a fraction of that amount, leaving the homeowner stranded in the dead of winter.
What I would like from AHS is a fair and transparent reimbursement that reflects actual retail replacement costs.
So, if you are considering buying this home warranty plan based on system coverage limits, do not buy! You're better off saving your money and putting it aside.
Josh did did a excellent job from SAFE Cali plumbing INC would definitely recommend to my friends
We bought the policy with the hope we’d be able to use their service when needed. We called and asked about a clogged toilet and were told it’s not covered and would cost a great deal to fix. We found a local handyman to cover it for much cheaper and did a fine job. So now we’re stuck for a year with a plan that is worthless. I find this to be a scam. We’re paying monthly premiums for what exactly?
I have a ShieldPlatinum plan with American Home Shield, and this experience has been extremely disappointing.
My electric tankless water heater stopped working, so I paid the $125 service fee and AHS assigned Home Choice Services. Before even opening or testing the unit, the technician told me it needed flush/service valves and flushing. When he later checked the electrical supply, he initially said there was no power. I explained that an electrician had already confirmed power a week earlier. He then questioned whether his meter was working correctly, retested, and confirmed there WAS power.
He never identified a failed component to me, never mentioned an overload, never explained what was supposedly overloaded, and never showed me any testing supporting that conclusion. Yet afterward, Home Choice reported the heater as “unrepairable” and “not normal wear and tear due to over capacity/overload,” and AHS denied coverage based on that report.
I contacted AHS and specifically explained why I believed the diagnosis was not properly supported. I was not disputing that the heater was broken; I was disputing the reported cause of failure. Instead of seriously addressing those concerns, I was essentially told that the technician’s diagnosis drives the coverage decision.
AHS eventually agreed to a second opinion, but I was told I may have to pay another service fee if the second contractor reaches the same diagnosis. That is frustrating after already paying $125 for a diagnosis I am specifically disputing.
This is also not my first difficult experience trying to get meaningful help from AHS. I previously had problems getting adequate assistance with a plumbing/septic-related service issue as well.
I do not expect every claim to be approved. I do expect AHS to care when a customer raises legitimate concerns about the quality of a contractor’s diagnosis. Right now, I feel like I am paying for a warranty and then having to fight just to get a properly supported diagnosis.
I will update this review after the second opinion.
I submitted this service request on June 28, 2026, for an LG WM3488HW combination washer/dryer that was no longer drying properly. Thomas Repair inspected the machine but did not attempt a repair or thoroughly investigate an internal lint and airflow problem that an authorized LG technician had corrected when the same symptoms occurred previously. Instead, the contractor said that unspecified parts would be ordered.
For nearly a month, I received no parts update. When I followed up, I was asked to send a reminder text, but I received no response. Thomas Repair later said the parts had arrived and scheduled a return appointment, but no one appeared. Additional promised appointments were also missed, even though members of my family remained at the house throughout the day to provide access.
Thomas Repair subsequently told AHS that attempts had been made to reach me. However, I have no record of the alleged calls or messages and remained reachable by telephone. I also supplied four different family telephone numbers.
The machine has since begun grinding, the drum has stopped moving, and the washer/dryer is now completely unusable. After more than two months, AHS has not provided a completed diagnosis, repair, replacement, different contractor, or written authorization to obtain outside service.
A warranty is only useful when the company provides service. Repeated telephone calls to AHS have produced promises and referrals back to the same contractor, but no repair. I am asking AHS to reassign this claim immediately to a qualified LG repair company or authorize replacement or outside service.
If zero stars were an option, I would have selected zero. This was, without question, the worst service experience I have had with American Home Shield.
I submitted my A/C service request on August 19. The contractor diagnosed a failed compressor on August 21, but there were significant delays and communication failures between the contractor and AHS before the necessary request was submitted, approved, and the compressor was actually ordered. The repair was not finally completed until September 3 — more than two weeks after my original service request.
This occurred during extreme Louisiana summer heat, with outdoor temperatures around 100°F. I also underwent surgery during this period and was confined to my home while recovering. Because our central A/C remained unusable, we had to purchase a window A/C unit simply to make one bedroom tolerable.
I repeatedly contacted AHS, explained the circumstances, and escalated the issue. I requested expedited service, reassignment to another service provider, or authorization/reimbursement to use a qualified local HVAC contractor who could complete the repair sooner. AHS refused every option. I was also offered no reimbursement or other accommodation for the extended loss of A/C or the window unit we were forced to purchase.
In addition to the $125 service fee, we were required to pay an additional $225 related to refrigerant for the compressor replacement.
What is most disappointing is that AHS had multiple opportunities to improve this experience after problems with the service process became apparent, yet every reasonable alternative I requested was denied. Had AHS taken ownership of the situation and offered a practical solution, my opinion of the company might be very different.
I have since submitted a formal written complaint to AHS by certified mail and filed consumer complaints with the Louisiana Attorney General and Better Business Bureau.
Once my current contract ends, I do not intend to renew my coverage with American Home Shield.
ATTENTION AHS: Before you respond with the same blanket response you apply to all negative reviews left here: I have already emailed you at the socialmedia@ahs website & provided my complaint, name, service address & dispatch number.
A month without AC, our heat pump went bad and they refused to fix it until the compressor replacement was on back order for 4-6 weeks. Ended up finally getting a cash offer to fix it ourselves - $490.
DO NOT USE THIS COMPANY!!!!
Horrible company. I have been trying since
Yesterday to get a hold of an actual
Human.
The company American Home Shield sent out to fix our ice maker was rated 1.3 star in reviews. They changed our flex door from a fridge to a freezer & damaged close to $700 worth of food and medicine.
They agree they were at fault but now are dodging the bill. American Home Shield basically just said they don’t cover food medication that was damaged because our fridge wasn’t working- but our fridge WAS working!
It was the icemaker that had the problem! I can’t even get on the phone with somebody to explain any of this- I need to put this company on their do not hire list!
It’s funny how when signing up to be with the company they were very responsive.
STAY AWAY FROM THIS COMPANY.
Full disclosure: I am both a Frontdoor (FTDR) shareholder and a long-time ShieldPlatinum member, AHS's top plan tier. My plan states a $50,000 Aggregate Limit — but as I found out during this claim, that number isn't actually what governs most individual claims. Buried underneath it are much smaller, category-specific limits ($5,000 here, different amounts elsewhere) that actually apply, and AHS never clearly explained this distinction until I pressed hard enough to force the issue.
I would not recommend this company, or the contractors they assign, based on this claim. AHS told me directly, in writing, that it "relies on the diagnoses and recommendations provided by the independent service contractors" -- meaning it has no real process to question or verify what a contractor reports. But in the same breath, Frontdoor's own press materials advertise a formal contractor "quality" process, with award winners selected based on "customer quality ratings" and "input from AHS field representatives." Those two claims cannot both be true, and seeing that contradiction play out in my own claim, as an investor, makes me genuinely uneasy.
Here is my ordeal. It started April 3, 2026, when a compressor was replaced under AHS home warranty. That compressor failed within the month. From June 18 through August 19, 2026, my HVAC system was the subject of 14 documented service visits by AHS's assigned contractor, Same Day Air Repair LLC — with invoices showing a filter drier omission, reused contaminated refrigerant, and an incorrectly installed compressor. AHS classified the resulting failure as "normal wear and tear" and billed me $6,572 out of pocket — despite the fact that not one of the 14 invoices ever identifies the air handler unit as a failed component.
Here's what actually matters most: the refrigerant line was never properly flushed after the original contamination event, and the most recently installed compressor went into that still-contaminated line. Even if I paid the $6,572 and let them replace the air handler, that would not fix the actual problem. I would still be paying out of pocket for a repair that doesn't address the root cause. And now AHS is pushing me toward a cash-in-lieu payout instead, calculated based on that same inadequate AHU-only repair rather than what it would actually cost to fix the system -- meaning even the cash option on the table falls short of what a real, working full system replacement actually costs. I would still have to pay the difference out of my own pocket just to get a system that works.
When I asked AHS directly for the specific invoice supporting their stated diagnosis, none was provided. When I asked for an itemized accounting of what was actually paid to the contractor, AHS refused, calling it "proprietary business information" — even though that figure directly determines how much of my own $5,000 coverage limit remains available to me. I'm not sure why this is treated any differently than a medical bill, where my health insurer discloses exactly what was billed, what they paid, and what I owe, every single time.
AHS's own written correspondence has also been inconsistent: one email stated "we have not determined that your system requires replacement," and five days later, a second email stated the replacement recommendation "has been approved for coverage consideration." I escalated this in writing to Frontdoor, AHS's parent company, addressed to their CEO and Chief Revenue Officer, with full documentation attached. The response I received stated the company's position "remains unchanged" and did not address any of the specific documentation I provided
I even escalated this to Frontdoor's VP of Investor Relations and their SVP & Chief Operating Officer, as both a shareholder and a longtime member, with a requested reply deadline. That deadline came and went with no response from either.
I also want to name the pressure this creates. My household has been living without air conditioning for over two months, through 87-90°F indoor temperatures during Arizona's extreme summer heat. AHS's Executive Relations department told me directly that its internal review is closed unless I select one of a handful of options, none of which actually resolve the underlying negligence. That's real pressure to just accept something, anything, to get relief -- and I don't think that pressure is accidental. I'm not willing to make that choice under those terms, but not everyone in this situation would have the ability to hold out.
I am currently pursuing this through the Arizona Department of Insurance and Financial Institutions and the Arizona Attorney General's Office.
They are highway robbers. They do not fulfill their warranty even when you get a lawyer to read it. They say so why aren’t they paying. These people want to steal your hard earned money and then make you pay more when you don’t have any air for 3 weeks. They are the worst kind of company. I will never trust companies after this atrocity
American home shield is a worthless warranty! We called about service on our air conditioner on April 25, 2026, they sent the most incompetent ac company they could fine, from a city 2hrs away! The city we live in has 100+ ac companies but they chose 2hrs away! They came and left 3 times and we still had no ac! I called ahs in mid May asking for a different company for service and they refused. Sent the same guys back who then decided we needed a new compressor. It took ahs until mid June to approve that purchase at which time they had the new compressor sent to Houston. Which is 13hrs from where we live! We called around and informed ahs that there was 3 compressor available in our city, but they would not approve that! Instead they started the entire approval process over, and finally approved and sent the same incompetent company out on July 18. Needless to say, it did not fix our problem! And we then paid out of pocket for a reputable company to come and fix our unit, the first time they came!!

I can attest to all the negative reviews here. PLEASE do yourself a favor, do NOT ever use this company. I agree that customer service doesn't care at all and very combative and disrespectful. They have no empathy in your situation. I currently have a plumbing leak in my home - an emergency one. Crickets on AHS. Both the contractor and I are having a hard time getting hold of customer service. Long wait times to talk to someone who cannot explain and provide answers. I really think this company is a scam. They will try their best to not pay or provide the service you paid for. Someone needs to investigate this company.

I’ve had AHS for several years, and overall, they’re okay when it comes to small repairs here and there. However, whenever it comes to something more serious—like a refrigerator, water heater, HVAC, or AC system—it seems like they find every possible excuse not to cover it. Every single time I’ve had a major issue, the process has been frustrating. Instead of simply fixing or paying for the repair as you would expect from a home warranty company, they come up with reasons to deny the claim or avoid covering the cost.
