DatBot
If you're here because you want a better image, please read either of the following explanations:
Short explanation: One of DatBot's functions is to resize non-free images that are larger than 0.1 megapixels as to fit Wikipedia's policy. Long explanation: Images that are uploaded on individual Wikipedias rather than Commons are non-free. One of the criteria is 'minimal usage', which in part includes that images should be rescaled as small as possible to still be useful as identified by their rationale, and no larger. Currently, that number stands at 100000 pixels, or 0.1 megapixels. If the resizing process itself made the image unusable, you can revert the change and add {{Non-free manual reduce}}. Otherwise, your best option is to find a free image or ask the copyright holder to release the image under a free license. See the free license and public domain images tutorial. The bot DOES NOT upload original images. If that's what you're looking for you're at the wrong place. If you've read the above and it does not apply to you, you can follow through to the operator's talk page here. |

Resizing of non-free
editJust my two cents, but this bot makes comparison pictures like [1] practically and functionally worthless. Might as well just delete at that point. Haruyasha (talk) 22:57, 22 May 2023 (UTC)
- @Haruyasha I join you, even while your message was older than 1 year. I think the original resolution was good. I think someone should solve these problems. (Addition: Looks like Template:Non-free no reduce is suitable for you.) RuzDD (talk) 14:18, 10 June 2024 (UTC)

Please restore File:My Observations During the Explosion at Trinity on July 16, 1945 - E. Fermi.jpg for legibility
editDear DatBot,
Size reduction of this report image makes it illegible. The image supports and illustrates the article Trinity_(nuclear_test)#Energy_measurements where this unclassified eyewitness report by famous physicist Enrico Fermi already was quoted long before
About 40 seconds after the explosion the air blast reached me....would be produced by ten thousand tons of T.N.T.
Readers can verify the whole report by themselves if the original image is retained. So
- Could you please restore this image to legible size? Then it makes more sense as proof and illustration.
Thank you, the uploader of this report image, Hansmuller (talk) 07:26, 7 August 2023 (UTC)

Regarding Image: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Britannia_Yacht_Club,_Ottawa_and_its_main_and_inner_harbours_in_2022.jpg
editOn January 3, 2024, Datbot uploaded a reduced-size version of the image. I am requesting that the previous version of the labelled file be permanently reinstated on the basis that the extensive labelling on this image already serves as a watermark, i.e. the labelling already prevents use of the unlabelled image because the labelling is permanent and cannot be removed according to the following statement extracted from Apple Support ( https://support.apple.com/en-ca/guide/preview/prvw1501/mac ): "Note: If you annotate an image file, you can’t edit, move, or delete the annotations after you save the image.”
Additionally, I had already reduced the size of the original Google Maps’ screenshot from 5.7 MB to 1.87 MB, a reduction of about one third.
Fulfilling this request will help make “Wikipedia the best that it can be”. Robert Neustadter (talk) 19:26, 4 January 2024 (UTC)
- Additionally, in the reduced-size image, Google's credits on the bottom of the Google Map image are illegible. Legible credits are mandatory (see https://about.google/brand-resource-center/products-and-services/geo-guidelines/#required-attribution ) in order to credit Google and the many third-party data providers that contributed to this image. Resize makes it larger!
edithttps://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Acrobat_(novel).jpeg 265 × 425 (22 KB) gets resized to 249 × 400 (77 KB). How does resizing it make it take up more space? Dream Focus 23:26, 21 January 2024 (UTC)
- @Dream Focus Looks like it's using the same JPEG quality for all files, without looking the original quality. For example, if you exported it with the quality of 20%, it can be using 50% so the space is wasting for no reason. And that shows robots cannot do tasks as good as humans. I think bots should not go into file processes unless they have a artificial intelligence engine, because for example this bot will not downgrade the quality enough for a very basic file while it will downgrade the quality too very much for very detailed images for example a screenshot of a computer program. RuzDD (talk) 13:17, 7 February 2024 (UTC).
I recently uploaded File:World of Horror screenshot.jpg and didn't resize it, but the DatBot autoresize ended up butchering/compressing much of the legibility of the interface due to the way the game is laid out surrounded by borders along with the small icons, so I ended up resizing it myself in a slightly different way that produced a sharper result with a slightly larger resolution (by which I mean, only 450 × 253 compared to 421 × 237), which ironically produced a smaller filesize, only for the bot to "fix" that by shrinking it down and re-obscuring the image, which makes it significantly blurier in addition to being smaller. Totalibe (talk) 19:41, 23 January 2024 (UTC)
- @Totalibe That's a huge example of this fact: robots cannot do tasks as good as humans. RuzDD (talk) 13:19, 7 February 2024 (UTC)

possible exclusion for File:Three Little Pigs - Fuller Brush Man 1933 and 1948.png?
editI have uploaded File:Three Little Pigs - Fuller Brush Man 1933 and 1948.png to illustrate the difference between the original 1933 release and the modified 1948 release. I was careful to size this image so that neither frame exceeds 320x240 pixels; however, because there are two frames in it, the total image size is approximately 650 pixels wide and is slightly more than 0.1 megapixels. I think that this should suffice to meet the non-free media guidelines, but DatBot keeps resizing it. Is it possible to exclude this file from DatBot? —Tim Pierce (talk) 17:02, 20 March 2024 (UTC)

Replaceable non-free use File:Derek Merrin, 135th General Assembly, Ohio.jpg
editThanks for uploading File:Derek Merrin, 135th General Assembly, Ohio.jpg. I noticed that this file is being used under a claim of non-free use. However, I think that the way it is being used fails the first non-free content criterion. This criterion states that files used under claims of non-free use may have no free equivalent; in other words, if the file could be adequately covered by a freely-licensed file or by text alone, then it may not be used on Wikipedia. If you believe this file is not replaceable, please:
- Go to the file description page and add the text
{{Di-replaceable non-free use disputed|<your reason>}}
below the original replaceable non-free use template, replacing<your reason>
with a short explanation of why the file is not replaceable. - On the file's talk page, write a full explanation of why you believe the file is not replaceable.
Alternatively, you can also choose to replace this non-free media item by finding freely licensed media of the same subject, requesting that the copyright holder release this (or similar) media under a free license, or by creating new media yourself (for example, by taking your own photograph of the subject).
If you have uploaded other non-free media, consider checking that you have specified how these media fully satisfy our non-free content criteria. You can find a list of description pages you have edited by clicking on this link. Note that even if you follow steps 1 and 2 above, non-free media which could be replaced by freely licensed alternatives will be deleted 2 days after this notification, per the non-free content policy. If you have any questions, please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. BottleOfChocolateMilk (talk) 21:07, 17 September 2024 (UTC)
