Lauri Haav shared thisFour countries. Different communities, different ways of studying, and very different daily realities. But all fuelled by the same very human aspiration: to build a better future and a new life trajectory by learning new skills. koodtech turned five this September. Almost like a birthday gift, five years after our very first learners started their //kood journey in September 2021, Selection Sprints were running simultaneously across our growing community: 🇲🇩 in Chișinău at kood/Moldova 🇫🇮 in Helsinki at Hive Helsinki 🇪🇪 in Tallinn at koodtech 🇺🇦 in Ukraine, with kood/Odesa and kood/Zhytomyr coming together for a //kood in Ukraine Online Sprint — taking place in conditions very, very different from the others. I couldn’t be in all these places. But even watching the Sprints unfold on our product screens — seeing people move through the challenges and imagining the thrill, the angst, the frustration and those proud aha! moments — gives our team an immense sense of pride and motivation. Behind every bar on that progress screen is a person who was curious and brave enough to try. Five years in, that still feels like the heart of what //kood is about. Thank you to everyone making it happen.

Lauri Haav shared thisTalking about putting your money where your mouth is or rolling up ones sleeves? You know what - talk is cheap and deeds speaker much much louder than words. Be like Ardi Niinepuu! Oh and do as I say not as I do because I'm sitting on my couch in Tallinn and am not out there in koodtech kood/Võru campus. yet.Lauri Haav shared thisBefore taking my seat at //kood, I first had to assemble it — along with the table. Today, I joined the furniture assembly day at //kood Võru learning centre. My studies begin on September 30, but becoming part of a community does not have to wait until the first day of school. If you’re going to become part of a community, it makes sense to help build it. Sometimes quite literally. Looking forward to seeing these rooms filled with people, ideas and things that do not exist yet. #kood #Võru #community #learning #buildinginpublic

Lauri Haav shared thisI have worked across multiple industries during my career, and I couldn’t agree more with Jason Masai. Some of the most rewarding moments don’t happen in boardrooms: they happen when you invest your time in your community and the next generation. A huge thank you for your contribution to koodtech Selection Sprint at kood/Nairobi. Your story, insights and encouragement were an inspiration to all of us, and especially to the future software engineers in the room. Looking forward to welcoming you back again!Lauri Haav shared thisInteresting how meaningful connections come full circle. A few months ago in Tallin, Estonia, I met Annika Tamm during the Africa Business Forum. Last week that conversation that started in Estonia led me to one of my most rewarding moments and it wasn't in a boardroom—it was in a lecture hall at Kenyatta University Alongside my colleague at M-PESA Africa evans otieno I had the privilege of spending time with the latest cohort at koodtech Kenya, speaking to over 50 aspiring software developers, many of them self-taught or just beginning their tech journeys. The questions they asked weren't just about product, AI, or careers. They reflected something even more important: Ambition and Clarity My message to them was simple: your background doesn't define your future. Your curiosity, consistency, and willingness to keep learning do. Africa doesn't need more people waiting for opportunities. It needs more builders who are hungry enough to create them. Thank you to Annika Tamm and the entire Kood Kenya team for creating a space where talent can grow and futures can be rewritten. I left inspired by the energy in the room and optimistic about the next generation of Africans in #Tech Alistair Amendi Sharleen Paskalia #Mentorship #GrowthMindset #BuildInAfrica

Lauri Haav shared this𝗧𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗮𝗯𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝗮 𝗰𝗮𝗿𝗲𝗲𝗿 𝗰𝗵𝗮𝗻𝗴𝗲? Recently I had the chance to try out the Prime Minister’s office at Stenbock House, courtesy of PM Kristen Michal. To be honest, the shoe — or more precisely, the writing desk — was not a perfect fit. Mostly because the furniture is over 100 years old, and people were apparently shorter back then. You hit your knee every time you pull in the chair. Nevertheless, I was grateful for the chance to try it for myself. For those wondering whether tech might be your next career, we offer something similar: a chance to try it out properly. 𝗝𝗼𝗶𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝟯-𝘄𝗲𝗲𝗸 𝗦𝗲𝗹𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗦𝗽𝗿𝗶𝗻𝘁 this summer in kood/Jõhvi, kood/Järva or kood/Võru. No strings attached. Come and see if the shoe fits. And if it does, Batch 9 lifts off in September with our new 𝗔𝗜-𝗥𝗲𝗮𝗱𝘆 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝗱𝘂𝗰𝘁 𝗘𝗻𝗴𝗶𝗻𝗲𝗲𝗿 track. A bit more than a year from now, you could be the one building the next Skype, Wise or Bolt. 🏃♂️ Sprint: 20 July – 7 August in Jõhvi, Võru and Paide 👩🎓 koodtech Studies: September 2026 – November 2027 📝 Apply: www.kood.tech

Lauri Haav shared thisIf you can’t explain a topic in simple terms then you don’t understand it well enough - goes a loose citation of a wise man, probably Richard Feynman? Ivo Kund definitely understands the topic of autonomous coding agents in AI-driven development so well he can explain it like I’m 5. Do take the 6-7 minutes and enjoy what Ivo has written over the weekend!Lauri Haav shared thisDoes it still make sense for people to study programming if agents do all the work? We've been discussing it a lot with Viktor Veertee when working on the new AI Literacy Curriculum for the next wave of students learning programming with koodtech. It's so fascinating topic that I took the weekend "off" to write this article. It zooms in to coding agent autonomy, takes it apart and discovers (spoilers) that yes, you will benefit from studying (and practicing) programming. Lauri Haav shared this𝘠𝘰𝘶 𝘤𝘢𝘯 𝘭𝘪𝘵𝘦𝘳𝘢𝘭𝘭𝘺 𝘴𝘩𝘢𝘳𝘦 𝘢 𝘥𝘦𝘴𝘬 𝘸𝘪𝘵𝘩 𝘺𝘰𝘶𝘳 𝘊𝘌𝘖. This line from Gilbert Kioko in kood/Nairobi blog post made me laugh a little. Mostly because, well, I guess I’m the CEO in question. And yes — I can confirm that I’m very happy to share my desk with people who are actually building the thing and moving stuff forward. Gilbert said: 𝘠𝘰𝘶 𝘤𝘢𝘯 𝘭𝘪𝘵𝘦𝘳𝘢𝘭𝘭𝘺 𝘴𝘩𝘢𝘳𝘦 𝘢 𝘥𝘦𝘴𝘬 𝘸𝘪𝘵𝘩 𝘺𝘰𝘶𝘳 𝘊𝘌𝘖. 𝘠𝘰𝘶 𝘧𝘦𝘦𝘭 𝘭𝘪𝘬𝘦 𝘺𝘰𝘶’𝘳𝘦 𝘢𝘭𝘭 𝘸𝘰𝘳𝘬𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘵𝘰𝘸𝘢𝘳𝘥𝘴 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘴𝘢𝘮𝘦 𝘵𝘩𝘪𝘯𝘨. 𝘛𝘩𝘦𝘳𝘦’𝘴 𝘯𝘰 𝘮𝘪𝘤𝘳𝘰𝘮𝘢𝘯𝘢𝘨𝘦𝘮𝘦𝘯𝘵 𝘣𝘶𝘵 𝘵𝘩𝘢𝘵 𝘢𝘭𝘴𝘰 𝘮𝘦𝘢𝘯𝘴 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘳𝘦𝘴𝘱𝘰𝘯𝘴𝘪𝘣𝘪𝘭𝘪𝘵𝘺 𝘪𝘴 𝘺𝘰𝘶𝘳𝘴. That last part is probably the most important one. No micromanagement sounds nice but it only works if people are willing to take the responsibility that comes with it. That’s not always easy. Especially when you join a new team, in a new country, working on a real product with real users. But Gilbert, Jamie and Grace did exactly that. They came from Nairobi to Tallinn through the Digital Explorers programme and got stuck in properly. Not as visitors. Not as interns sitting on the side. But as part of the team. And honestly, that is what made it work. 𝗧𝗿𝘂𝘀𝘁 𝗽𝗲𝗼𝗽𝗹𝗲, 𝗚𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗺 𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗹 𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗸, 𝗘𝘅𝗽𝗲𝗰𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗺 𝘁𝗼 𝗼𝘄𝗻 𝗶𝘁. Simple in theory but harder in practice, worth it when it works! Lauri Haav shared this📢 A big shout-out to everyone who contributed to the delivery of the koodtech Curriculum Update 2026! Led by Viktor Veertee, with invaluable support from Karmen Tigas on market research and Ivo Kund on connecting real-world industry needs with our ambitions for the programme. A heartfelt thank you as well to the kood/Fellowship, whose guidance and challenge help keep us focused on building the best possible programme for future builders: Priit Kaasik, Oliver Leisalu, Mart Roosimägi and last but certainly not least Margus Niitsoo This update reflects months of research, discussion, and collaboration around a simple but important question: what does it take to be an impact-ready software engineer in 2026?Lauri Haav shared thisEvery couple of years, we revisit our core curriculum to adapt to what the role and market demands. This is our third update and before changing anything, we spent months on one question: 𝗪𝗵𝗼 𝗶𝘀 𝗮 𝘀𝗼𝗳𝘁𝘄𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝗲𝗻𝗴𝗶𝗻𝗲𝗲𝗿 𝗶𝗻 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟲? 💻 We spoke with senior engineers and engineering managers, technical recruiters and our alumni to understand what separates junior hires who grow fast from those who struggle and how the role itself is changing. Across companies, AI adoption looks different. Some teams are AI-native by default. Others are moving carefully. But everyone agreed on two things 1️⃣ engineers who ignore AI will become obsolete and 2️⃣ engineers who over-rely on it will get outcompeted by people who use it with judgment. Technical skill still matters. It gets candidates through the door but what gets evaluated once they’re inside is something broader: • decision-making • ownership • communication • product thinking • the ability to understand why something should be built, not just how That led us to update the curriculum in three layers: 𝟭. 𝗧𝗲𝗰𝗵𝗻𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗹 𝗱𝗲𝗽𝘁𝗵 + 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗱𝘂𝗰𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗴 🤝 Our students were already strong builders. We kept that strength and expanded it to better reflect modern engineering work - building larger systems, understanding users, validating decisions and thinking beyond implementation 𝟮. 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝗳𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝗽𝗼𝘀𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲 🧑💻 Self-paced peer learning naturally develops ownership, feedback culture, and independent problem-solving but we noticed first-career students often needed those expectations to be made explicit. So now we teach those habits intentionally: • how to work through ambiguity • how to review and defend decisions • how to collaborate professionally • how to take responsibility for shipped work 𝟯. 𝗔𝗜 𝗹𝗶𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗮𝗰𝘆 🤖 We’ve spent a long time separating hype from durable skills. This means at //kood, you learn AI: • as a professional tool inside day-to-day workflows • as a capability in itself • as something to use responsibly and precisely • and importantly, knowing when not to use it Our goal isn’t to produce junior developers, we aim to create what we call: 𝗶𝗺𝗽𝗮𝗰𝘁-𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗱𝘆 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗱𝘂𝗰𝘁 𝗲𝗻𝗴𝗶𝗻𝗲𝗲𝗿𝘀 🚀 People who can join real-world teams and contribute from day one because they've already practiced shipping real systems, working in teams, making technical decisions, giving and receiving feedback, and using AI thoughtfully rather than as a shortcut around thinking. Join the ride and apply now to the next Selection Sprint 👉 kood.tech 🔗 Read more in our blog: https://lnkd.in/eQ-B-mNF #koodtech

Lauri Haav reacted on thisLauri Haav reacted on thisI got in! 😄 koodtech //kood Selection Sprint is officially over and today I got the email that I passed and earned a spot at //kood. 🎉 2.5 weeks ago I started learning Java basically from zero. Since then there have been A LOT of exercises, two exams, three group projects, Git, debugging, testing, code reviews and quite a few moments when I was staring at my screen thinking: I have absolutely no idea what I’m doing. 😂 Yesterday afternoon we presented our final group projects and had our virtual graduation session. And today the official email arrived. I passed! 😄 The whole thing actually started because I saw Justin Hein sharing the Selection Sprint on Facebook. I thought, why not? So I signed up and showed up. At that point I definitely wasn’t thinking that 2.5 weeks later I would be sitting here with an invitation to actually study at //kood. 😂 And no, I still don’t feel like I know how to program. 😄 If anything, I now understand much better how much I DON’T know. But when I think back to the first days and compare them to what I can understand and do now... quite a lot can apparently happen in 2.5 weeks. So yes. Pretty proud of myself today. 😊 🤩

Lauri Haav reacted on thisLauri Haav reacted on thisI finished //kood. 🎓 WiFi feels like magic, but studying telecommunications taught me that it’s really physics and engineering. I wanted to understand software in the same way, so I went to koodtech to find out. It still feels like magic sometimes, but now I have a much better understanding of how much work goes into the apps and systems we often take for granted. The more I learn, the more I realize how much I still don’t know. Technology keeps changing fast, so the learning doesn’t stop here. It’s all about the process. Big thanks to Lauri Haav, Kätlin Merisalu and the koodtech team for this opportunity, and to my peers for all the teamwork and code reviews along the way.

Lauri Haav liked thisLauri Haav liked this70 exceptional people. Different ages, professions and backgrounds. One shared determination to learn, to build, to be better. One month ago I got to know these awesome participants in the first kood/Moldova selection sprint. What struck me most was their clarity of purpose: they know what they want and are ready to roll up their sleeves and work for it. That is an attitude I have always admired and an attitude we should nurture as a society. Their progress was remarkable. Some started from scratch; others brought previous IT experience. They learned from each other, worked through problems together and, crucially, learned how to learn. Along the way, they built meaningful friendships that will carry into the year of learning ahead. The kood method in one sentence, as I would describe it: we throw you into the water and see how you swim. My type of learning. May not work for everyone, but will work for you if you are committed. In Estonia, 48% of koodtech students get a job before graduating. Pretty impressive, I say. Our ambition is to create the same kind of practical opportunity in Moldova: learning that translates into skills, employment and new possibilities. The next selection sprint is planned for January 2027! If you are considering a career in tech, or know someone who is, you can already register at www.kood.md and follow each of the instructions sent by email. Please share this opportunity with anyone who could benefit. Thank you to ASEM for providing an excellent space for teamwork and learning. The project is delivered in partnership with Practnet (Estonia), with support from the European Union.

Lauri Haav reacted on thisLauri Haav reacted on thisWhat an experience the koodtech selection sprint has been! The pace was has been intense - 3 topics, 6 exercises, finish the day and no time to waste, tomorrow is a new day, new topics, new exercises. “Relentless” is the word I’ve used to describe it most, but such intense relentlessness yields immense rewards! I was slightly nervous about coming to study again (and it was rather justified because, wow, it has been hard), but I went from “public static void {return 1+1;}” to building a weather app, a notes app, and even wordle! Whatever comes next, it’s been a blast!

Finland’ startup ecosystem doesn’t need more hype. We need more €100M revenue companies, or “centaurs”. I joined the Startup Ministeriö podcast (Finland’s unofficial “startup ministry” run by Timo Ahopelto & Jyri Engeström) to talk about one idea I think matters for the whole country: We’ve built ~20 “centaurs” in Finland, companies with €100M+ in real revenue. But we need 100. Why? Because 100 centaurs would mean: * €10B in revenue * €5B in real domestic value * ~€0.5B per year in tax income * 60,000–80,000 new jobs * And inevitably a new wave of Supercells, Wolts and ŌURAs ("unicorns") This isn’t fantasy. We built the first 20 when the ecosystem was tiny, so creating 80 more is not unrealistic. Creating the next 80 centaurs requires three things: 1. More successful founders investing & coaching in the new generation of founders. Especially product and engineering founders sharing their knowledge to the new generations. 2. Finland should become the easiest place in Europe for world-class founders to move and build: fast visas, fast integration, real incentives. 3. A stronger local new founder pipeline from Aalto, Maria 01, FR8, Junction and others pushing out globally ambitious teams. Here’s the MVP (the minimum viable plan) to get there: 1. Fix stock options so employees can become angels instead of losing their upside. 2. A founder fast-track visa + “Lex Miki” integration law: weeks, not months. 3. A proactive founder-attraction unit that measures success in founders brought to Finland. 4. A simple matching-funds scheme for credible early-stage teams (local + foreign). 5. Double down on Aalto University, Maria 01 & our Y Combinator -pipeline programs. Measured in centaurs, not events. Small policy changes. Huge compounding impact. If we get this right, the next 25 years can redefine Finland’s economy. Listen the full episode on Spotify or from Youtube in the link below. 👉 https://lnkd.in/dgKhVzN3 Would love to hear your view. What is already being done? How can one help to get this done? Thank you for having me, Jyri & Timo 🙏

Innovations like MATx show how much potential there is in creating tailored practice and clear feedback for students while giving teachers the actionable insights they need. Our educators carry a huge responsibility, and they deserve every bit of support we can provide. Seeing initiative like this move from a hackathon idea to real classroom validation is a major step forward for accessible education. Excited to see the impact MATx will have on both teachers and learners!

𝐖𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐢𝐟 𝐲𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐢𝐧𝐧𝐨𝐯𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐰𝐚𝐬 𝐠𝐮𝐢𝐝𝐞𝐝 𝐛𝐲 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐬𝐚𝐦𝐞 𝐩𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐜𝐢𝐩𝐥𝐞 𝐭𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐦𝐚𝐝𝐞 𝐖𝐚𝐲𝐧𝐞 𝐆𝐫𝐞𝐭𝐳𝐤𝐲 𝐥𝐞𝐠𝐞𝐧𝐝𝐚𝐫𝐲? At the Baltic Business Forum in Riga, I spoke on behalf of SEB Latvija about cultivating a future-ready mindset using Gretzky’s famous quote about skating to where the puck will be, not where it is. Using this idea, we can develop our future-ready mindsets in three steps: ✅ Step 1: Look for signals Gretzky didn’t randomly skate to a spot, hoping the puck would come. He observed the puck and the forces influencing its movement. Likewise, we need to look for signals that hint at how the future might unfold. The theory? The future is already here, just not widely distributed yet. Think back to MP3s and Napster, those were strong signals of what was coming. Today, signals are everywhere such as X seeking a payment license in the US, Stripe partnering with OpenAI, companies planning to hire 100 AI engineers, or articles predicting organizational charts will be replaced by work charts. These are indicators of change that break the pattern. The challenge? We rarely notice them because we’re not looking. It is the same as if I ask you how many red cars you saw yesterday, you’ll struggle. But if I ask you to count them tomorrow, you’ll be surprised by how many you notice when you pay attention. 𝑻𝒓𝒂𝒊𝒏 𝒚𝒐𝒖𝒓𝒔𝒆𝒍𝒇 𝒕𝒐 𝒏𝒐𝒕𝒊𝒄𝒆 𝒂𝒏𝒐𝒎𝒂𝒍𝒊𝒆𝒔. 𝑻𝒉𝒆 𝒇𝒖𝒕𝒖𝒓𝒆 𝒊𝒔 𝒂𝒍𝒓𝒆𝒂𝒅𝒚 𝒉𝒆𝒓𝒆; 𝒊𝒕’𝒔 𝒋𝒖𝒔𝒕 𝒖𝒏𝒆𝒗𝒆𝒏𝒍𝒚 𝒅𝒊𝒔𝒕𝒓𝒊𝒃𝒖𝒕𝒆𝒅. ✅ Step 2: Move Gretzky didn’t just watch the puck; he moved toward where it was likely to go. For us, that means asking: 𝘐𝘧 𝘵𝘩𝘪𝘴 𝘴𝘪𝘨𝘯𝘢𝘭 𝘣𝘦𝘤𝘰𝘮𝘦𝘴 𝘸𝘪𝘥𝘦𝘭𝘺 𝘥𝘪𝘴𝘵𝘳𝘪𝘣𝘶𝘵𝘦𝘥 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘧𝘳𝘦𝘲𝘶𝘦𝘯𝘵𝘭𝘺 𝘰𝘤𝘤𝘶𝘳𝘳𝘪𝘯𝘨 (𝘮𝘢𝘪𝘯𝘴𝘵𝘳𝘦𝘢𝘮), 𝘸𝘩𝘢𝘵 𝘸𝘪𝘭𝘭 𝘪𝘵 𝘭𝘰𝘰𝘬 𝘭𝘪𝘬𝘦? Ask the question in relation to your product, service, business model, customer, or industry. This forces us to think beyond the present. And yes, skepticism will surface, such as concerns about safety and reliability. These are valid, but don’t let them stop you from exploring. ✅ Step 3: Act When Gretzky reached the puck, he knew what to do. An idea is not enough. We need action. Translate your thoughts into something tangible such as an MVP, prototype, or at least a detailed description for your context and company. Why? Because this is where learning happens. You validate assumptions, uncover possibilities, and discover better ways of doing things. Without this step, signals remain trivia. By looking for signals, imagining their impact, and acting before it’s obvious, we can evolve our future-ready mindset and become the Gretzky of strategic foresight. 𝑾𝒉𝒂𝒕 𝒔𝒊𝒈𝒏𝒂𝒍𝒔 𝒂𝒓𝒆 𝒚𝒐𝒖 𝒏𝒐𝒕𝒊𝒄𝒊𝒏𝒈 𝒕𝒐𝒅𝒂𝒚 𝒕𝒉𝒂𝒕 𝒎𝒊𝒈𝒉𝒕 𝒔𝒉𝒂𝒑𝒆 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝒇𝒖𝒕𝒖𝒓𝒆 𝒐𝒇 𝒚𝒐𝒖𝒓 𝒊𝒏𝒅𝒖𝒔𝒕𝒓𝒚? #SEBinnovation
