Lauren Brown shared thisYesterday, I had the pleasure of attending Nordic B Together for the second year running, joining 100+ B Corps from across the region to explore how organisations are bringing nature into the boardroom 🌳 A few takeaways stood out: ➡️ Perfect shouldn’t be the enemy of good. As Jenni Swadding from Patagonia highlighted, leadership creates permission for employees to act. ➡️ With 7 of 9 planetary boundaries exceeded, Andreas Rasche from CBS challenged us to broaden business-case thinking beyond the short term and better quantify the benefits of sustainability. ➡️ Organisations are finding creative ways to lead: Icebug AB building a coalition to source FSC-certified rubber, 66°North showcasing old styles to encourage people to use what they already own, and Merkur Andelskasse advocating for meat to be treated as a luxury rather than a given. It’s easy to become pessimistic in this space, so B Lab Nordics events like this are a valuable reminder that progress is happening, and that together, we have the power to accelerate it.

This time we got into carbon capture and carbon removal: Which methods actually work well and which industries are using it (and which should adopt it much faster). Something new I learned: In India for example, biochar as a carbon removal tactic also makes the soil more fertile, which helps farmers and local communities at the same time. 🌱 We also talked about carbon emission accounting, and how little transparency companies still have into their supply chains in particular. Plus, how data centers and AI usage fit into that reporting, jokingly called "Scope 4" by some... And we ended on the question I think a lot of us have: Between all the greenwashing and the confusing information out there, how do you figure out the most impactful thing you can do as a single person? Most of the industry is on holiday and the conference circuit takes a bit of a break until September, which makes it a great time to catch up on new research. This week I have been attending the 7th World Conference on Climate Change and Global Warming (CCGCONF), hosted here in Copenhagen. Talks have ranged from nature-based solutions for food security, to greenhouse gas accounting, carbon hotspot identification, and beyond. Research takes time to work its way into legislation, standards and the industry practice. Staying close to it across the sector, not just in the corners we work in day to day, is how we remain ahead of where the standards are heading rather than reacting once they land. #CCGCONF

That's why we engaged Deloitte to independently review our process, resulting in a limited assurance statement we can point to for added confidence. Here’s 3 key reasons why: • Deloitte's review gives external confirmation that we apply our framework consistently, across every project and geography — not just when it's convenient. • There's no market-wide requirement for this yet. We think there should be. Until then, we're raising the bar ourselves. • As scrutiny of climate claims grows, "trust us" isn't enough. Independent assurance gives clients something credible to stand behind when the make procurement decisions. For our clients, that translates directly into greater confidence. Lauren Brown shared thisJune is a busy month for conferences and events, and last week I was lucky enough to attend the Industry Connect: Danish Biochar Network Event, hosted by Rockstart at BaneGaarden in sunny Copenhagen ☀️ Some key takeaways included... ➡️ Expert insights from Stiesdal, EIFO, and SEGES Innovation on scaling biochar in Denmark ➡️ A roundtable exploring the potential bottlenecks and benefits of Københavns Kommune utilising garden waste for biochar production It's clear that legislation and longer-term commitments are needed to truly scale the sector in Denmark, but the passion and depth of knowledge in the room gave real cause for optimism. I also joined ☕ Climate Coffee Copenhagen in celebrating their 1-year anniversary, hosted by FLEXECHARGE. It was a good reminder of how strong Copenhagen's climate community is, and that sometimes the best conversations have no agenda at all.

Lauren Brown shared thisVintages are a continuously debated topic in CDR... Is it better to buy current vintages to support an immediate climate impact, or future vintages to support the development of the future of the sector (and often nascent technologies)? For a bit of context, the vintage of a Carbon Dioxide Removal (CDR) credit refers to the year that the carbon is removed from the atmosphere and stored. 🍷 A paper published in Nature earlier this year speaks directly to this question. In quantifying climate loss and damage through the lens of the social cost of carbon, the authors find that the effectiveness of CDR in reducing future damages declines with every year of delay between emission and capture, with a 25-year lag cutting potential damage reduction roughly in half. So what should guide your vintage strategy? It depends on what you're trying to achieve: ➡️ Do you want to maximise climate impact right now? ➡️ Do you want to maximise social and environmental co-benefits? ➡️ Do you want to support the long-term development of the sector? These goals aren't always in conflict, but they don't always point to the same answer either. Understanding which one you're optimising for is often the most important step. What is clear is that waiting and seeing has a cost, and now we're starting to be able to quantify it. Link to the paper in the comments. #CDR #Carbonremoval

Lauren Brown liked thisLauren Brown liked thisOn Sept. 27, the Empowering Consumers for the Green Transition (sometimes called EmpCo or ECGT) directive comes into force. The EU's rules on green claims now mean no vague terms or unsubstantiated labels, overall benefitting the integrity of climate action, not just communications. Good news for companies with targets backed by a credible transition plan and sufficient documentation → this is an edge. Less good news for those still building towards one, or don't yet have the size or resource to meet the compliance bar. Short term, that gap risks companies going quiet on climate actions altogether, which slows progress even as the direction is right. That caution isn't limited to weak claims. Fear of scrutiny can make companies pull back from good climate action too, including quality CDR, simply to avoid being tied to the wrong headline. This serves as a reminder that CDR demand doesn't move in one direction. Some forces push companies forward & others can hold them back. One pushing forward: the EU's CRCF framework (Carbon Removals and Carbon Farming) and the Buyer's Club forming around it. Both are real steps towards the market removals need by the 2030s. But a framework alone doesn't create demand. Companies need clear, safe use cases to act on, not just a certification to aim for. Two worth watching: → Net-zero neutralisation of residual emissions → A contribution approach to ongoing emissions What I'm watching next: whether ETS and CRCF stay open to a portfolio of pathways, and whether the Buyer's Club lets companies talk about their CRCF purchases with confidence, not caution. Årets tema var ’The Nature in Business’ og til at åbne showet, havde de inviteret Jenni Swadding på scenen for at fortælle om, hvordan Patagonia har gjort Jorden til deres eneste shareholder. Det er som om, at mange virksomheder har glemt, at en velfungerende natur og en Jord i balance er fundamentet for deres virksomheds eksistensgrundlag. Og endnu færre gør noget ved det. Patagonia har længe været bannerfører. For B Corp-bevægelsen, for 1% for the Planet og for aktivistiske tiltag, som da de forleden endnu engang sagsøgte den amerikanske præsident for at stjæle land. Pengene investeres i projekter i hele verden. De penge, de tjener i de enkelte regioner, får lov til at blive i området gennem fonden og 1% for the Planet-initiativet. Sidste år donerede de eksempelvis 200 mio. dollars til WWF i Finland, så de kunne fjerne en dæmning til fordel for områdets biodiversitet. Det betyder ikke, at Patagonia ikke har en negativ impact på verden. Det er de også selv opmærksomme på. Cirka 50% af deres produkter er lavet af biprodukter fra fossilindustrien. Derfor har de strenge krav til deres kvalitet, forklarede Jenni Swadding. Når de designer produkter har de derfor defineret guidende spørgsmål med en skala fra 1-10. Spørgsmålene omhandler alt fra design, produktion, brug af produktet og end of life. Spørgsmålene lyder blandt andet: ”Are the materials the best available?”, ”Is it repairable?” ”What is the environmental cost?” ”Is it durable over time?” og ”Does it fit well and does it perform as intended?”. Endnu har ingen af deres produkter scoret 10. ”It’s a North Star, and not approachle for us. Yet!” forklarede Jenni Swading under oplægget. Det er et ambitiøs mål. Sådan nogle har Patagonia flere af. Her forklarede Jenni Swadding, hvordan de arbejder med hos Patagonia. For de sætter nemlig ikke bare mål. De går også meget op i at nå dem. Derfor spørger de hele tiden sig selv om, hvordan de kan gøre målene relevante for den enkelte i virksomheden. ”Goals must be nurtured to be met,” som Jenni Swadding påpegede. Og her er det ledelseslagets ypperste opgave at sikre sig, at alle i virksomheden føler, at de har tilladelse til at handle for at kunne nå et skridt nærmere målene. Det gør de blandt andet ved at lade alle ansatte Patagonia få to ugers fuldt betalt arbejde hos en NGO. Ikke alene sikrer det, at hver enkelt medarbejder føler, at deres arbejde giver mening. Det betyder også, at de knytter tætte bånd til græsrodsbevægelser, oprindelige befolkninger og miljø-organisationer. Really looking forward to working with all of CBS and those around us! A key priority will be to strengthen collaboration with businesses, policymakers, foundations, NGOs, and other partners. Universities are part of society, and so should research results be… My first task: listen and learn. So, reach out if you have ideas, or if you think we should work together. It also means saying goodbye to my Associate Dean role for the Full-Time MBA after eight years. We achieved so much together, and I will miss it. A big thank you to the entire CBS MBA team! Fra Business Ethics, CSR, Creating Shared Values, Sustainability, Regenerativity – og nu ✨Resiliece✨. Det er som om, at vi i stedet for at ændre måden, vi agerer på, ændrer måden, vi italesæter vores udfordringer. Senest med skiftet fra sustainability til resilience. Grunden skal findes i EU ved seneste parlamentsvalg, hvor der skete en højredrejning i sammensætningen af EU-parlamentarikere. Pludseligt blev en masse EU-regulering rullet tilbage. Det skete blandt andet, fordi en masse bureaukrater mente, at det var til skade for EU-virksomheders konkurrenceevne. ”But pushing back compliance does not improve competitiveness of business,” fortalte Andreas Rasche i sit oplæg til årets Nordic B Together. Han var kommet for at tale om ’The Great Sustainability Reset’. En slags State of the Union-tale, hvor han tog temperaturen på det regulative landskab i EU. Og på trods af sommerens intense varme, virker det til, at de i EU har vendt den kolde skulder til grøn omstilling. Og så alligevel ikke helt. For de arbejder stadig med tematikkerne. De er bare begyndt at kalde det noget andet. ”There is still progress in EU. They just don’t use words such as green and sustainability. They are talking about resilience,” som Andreas Rasche påpegede. Nu er klimapolitik pakket ind under geopolitik. Vi må omstille os til vedvarende energi for at frigøre os fra russisk gas og amerikansk olie. Cirkularitet er blevet en måde at værne om de naturressourcer, der er så vigtige for vores stabile og sikre samfund, men som importeres fra lande, der potentielt truer stabiliteten og sikkerheden. Og det er ikke bare politikere, der har fokus på resiliens. Det har europæiske CEOs også. 1 ud af 10 nævnte i Q2 ekstrem varme, skovbrande og tørke har direkte indflydelse på deres forretning. Med det opstår så en anden udfordring. Som Andreas Rasche så fint siger det: ”We need to stop the 🐂💩 of the business case for sustainability.” Det er en illusion. I hvert fald indtil vi får fikset vores governance-system og bestyrelsens fiduciary duties. For sustainability, resilience, regenerativity, eller business ethics vil aldrig vise sig som andet end fordyrende, indtil vi får fikset vores kortsigtede kvartalsmæssige målepunkter. For de vil ikke vise den forbedring og udvikling, vi leder efter. Men hvis vi i stedet ændrer sigtet til et 5-8 års perspektiv, vil vi kunne se, at det faktisk giver mening. Lauren Brown liked thisLauren Brown liked thisNew beginnings are challenging, but they bring movement 🌱 Last Wednesday, I attended my first Nordic B Together event in Copenhagen. I attended alongside GRØD, though I ended up there solo due to unexpected events. I owe my place at this event to our ongoing collaboration with Sascha Ørbekker and the GRØD team for extending this invitation to me. 🙏 Almost a year ago, I resigned my job to pursue my Corporate Business Sustainability diploma and shift into work driven by purpose. The transition started faster than expected. Just five months in, it found me naturally through a collaboration with GRØD on their B Corp certification journey. That connection gave me the boost I needed to step fully back into consulting. 🎯 Back at the event, surrounded by 140 participants from six Nordic countries, it was energizing to see how many people are actively changing the nature of business. And this is just the tip of the iceberg. 🧊 Two moments grounded me deeply: First, we began with a silent meditation surrounded by forest sounds, asking what element of nature we would be. For me, it was the butterfly 🦋 . Its success depends entirely on the stability and quality of its environment. I see the sustainability transition similarly. Constant movement requires stable structures and correct nourishment to achieve a beautiful but sustained outcome. It starts with us and our own balance. ⚖️ Only when we are in sync with ourselves and nature can we tackle the challenges ahead effectively. It is a two-way street, we must stay focused and knowledgeable to drive the process forward, while collaboratively nourishing the environment so the transition doesn't become a fluffy concept. 🍃 Second, hearing Andreas Rasche from CBS discuss "The Great Sustainability Reset". He acknowledged the backlash and uncertainty while urging us to broaden the narrative beyond "win-win" scenarios. As someone from a regulatory background, that felt timely. The landscape is messy, but the direction is clear. We need to start with governance. ↘️ I also appreciated the presentation of the new Danish toolkit, which offers practical ways to give nature a voice as a stakeholder (as an inspiration, an advisor, a director/board member, or a shareholder), moving beyond just pricing it. 🔍 I'm grateful for all the connections, fruitful conversations, and inspiration. 🙏 As I continue my consultancy path, I will keep a close eye on the B Corp community and the broader sustainability landscape.🤓 A special thank you to the hosts Gitte Rosholm, Elisabet Skylare and Lovis E. from B Lab Nordics for a great event. 🙏 In two weeks, I head to Prague for the 1-week long Erasmus+ course "Education for Sustainability: Designing Tomorrow". Strengthening pre-development planning, clarifying grid responsibilities, improving stakeholder engagement, and optimizing tender design will be key to accelerating deployment and building investor confidence. Great to see this idea come to fruition. In conversation with partners working on the PUSH-IT project, we thought it'd be useful to collate and share ideas for engaging local communities around local energy projects. This was developed with UTES (underground thermal energy storage) in mind, but will be valuable for anyone seeking to engage the public around other energy projects. Big up to Merryn Thomas for leading on this.

I enjoyed a morning at Portcullis House, Westminster, this morning with The Policy Liaison Group on ESG for an interesting roundtable on AI and the energy transition. There were fascinating discussions around the handprint of AI, meaning the positive impacts AI can enable. We apply this at SGN where AI and machine learning are crucial parts of the future Digital Platform for Leakage Analytics where we see the move away from calculated methane leaks to observed real-time leakage using tech as Advanced Leakage Detection for below ground assets and monitors on above ground assets. This will enable us and other gas distribution networks to reduce our carbon emissions. We of course also discussed the footprint of AI, including the use of energy required for data centres. Currently 1.5% of global emissions come from AI, and this is expected to rise to 8% in 2040! There are opportunities to use greener gases like biomethane and in the future possibly hydrogen to improve these impacts. Finally, for all of us who are responsible for data and reporting to ever increasing ESG frameworks, there are efficiencies to be had - and some are already doing it, with examples given in the room. An important new report on the skills need to drive the net zero policies in the East Midlands . The study finds that existing evidence is sufficient to support strategic workforce planning but should not be treated as a precise forecasting model. No single dataset provides a complete picture: national and regional sources differ in their definitions, methodologies, classifications and geographical coverage, while evidence remains weaker for precise local occupation forecasts, project-specific job estimates and longer-term demand to 2050. The report identifies priorities for strengthening future workforce intelligence, including more consistent definitions, improved local and occupation-level evidence, stronger project-to-workforce mapping, better links between workforce demand and skills provision, and greater regional coordination of workforce evidence. https://lnkd.in/eFn6H9F4

A Christmas present for the energy innovation community! 🎁 Today we published the 2025 Energy Innovation Needs Assessment reports; a multi-year project led by the Carbon Trust to analyse the impact of innovation in key technologies and how they can bring down the cost of the future energy system. It also looks into innovation needs and barriers within each area, and the associated opportunities for UK businesses that come with deploying new technologies. It's a hugely rich evidence base and a shared resource for government, innovators, energy technology companies, investors, research and other stakeholders across the UK to better understand the needs and challenges in energy innovation and take advantage of the opportunities. Given the scale and complexity of the project, it's been a huge effort from the consortium that delivered it (Iain Meager, Jonathan Clowes, Lucy Fellingham, Masaō Ashtine, Laura Glover, Paul Dodds, Francisca Jalil, John Ward and many more). Headlines: ⭐ High levels of innovation in all 26 technologies studied could cumulatively save £203bn–£348bn of UK energy system costs between 2025 and 2050 (£2022 basis), compared to a low innovation scenario. ⭐ Of all the technologies studied, innovation in air-source heat pumps, BECCS, DACCS, and offshore wind lead to the largest reductions in total energy system costs. ⭐ Innovation across EINA technologies contributes to approximately 6 – 10% electricity transmission cost reduction in 2050, while innovation in modelled storage technologies could reduce electricity system costs by £2bn–£5bn p.a. in 2050. Network innovation plays a crucial role to improve system resilience and enables the deployment of critical decarbonisation technologies. ⭐ Deploying all technologies in scope of the study could support approximately £19 billion (£2022 basis) in UK GVA in 2050 and 470,000 jobs – especially significant in carbon management, offshore renewables and heating. (worth noting the limits in the scope of these numbers in terms of the technologies included and assumptions used, and the far higher ambitions for the UK across the sector as a whole - refer to the clean energy jobs plan).

To mark World Engineering Day for Sustainable Development yesterday, EngineeringUK updated its Net Zero Workforce report: https://lnkd.in/e2dmgc2t This update reflects the Government’s Clean Energy Jobs Plan which forecasts 195,000 new jobs by 2030, and its Warm Homes Plan which foresees 180,000 additional jobs in energy efficiency and clean heating by 2030. Big numbers, mostly in engineering and technology roles. Young people need to be made aware of these green careers.
