You get four unforgettable days together, filled with connection, inspiration, and plenty of fun. Yoga at sunrise, Palermo adventures, pottery workshops, and downtime by the water...Sicily gave us a little bit of everything. But more than the activities, what made this off-site so special was the people. Colleagues flew in from across the globe all coming together in one place. Moments like these remind us that innovation doesn’t only happen at the desk. On Saturday the 3 biggest people in AI said they want to slow down. Dario Amodei wrote it, Sam Altman agreed, and Elon replied with "Dario is right." But I bet no one will slow down. And for most companies it wouldn't matter if it did, because most companies can't keep up already. There are 2 speeds in AI. How fast the models get better, and how fast companies implement workflows around them. Saturday's argument was about the first one. Outside our LinkedIn AI bubble, most companies are stuck on the second. In GTM, many founders we've met call their company AI native: AI scrapes the list, a person exports it. AI writes the script, a person pastes it into the next tool. The model does the work and a human is the glue between every step. The Census asked American businesses in May whether they use AI in any function. 19.8% said yes. Under 20 employees, fewer than 1 in 5. 4 out of 5 haven't started, never mind rebuilt anything. This happened before. Electric motors were in factories from the 1880s. Factory productivity didn't move until the 1920s, 40 years, because every plant was built around one steam shaft and had to be rebuilt with a motor on each machine. The motor was never the slow part. Most companies don't need a better model; they need better implementation.

Somehow, we have interpreted this as "LET'S REBUILD EVERY SAAS TOOL IN CLAUDE!!!" 😭 I saw a Reddit thread today about RevOps teams cancelling SaaS tools and vibe coding replacements in-house. One team apparently built their own version of Granola. Granola costs like $18/month. PLEASE. ✋ I say this as someone who LOVES building stuff... 🥹 But we still need to remember opportunity cost. When you buy software, you're not paying for somebody to write the code. You're paying for: → the engineering team maintaining it → customer support when something breaks → security and permissions → infrastructure → product improvements → documentation → QA → all the weird edge cases that show up six months later You're basically pooling those costs with every other customer instead of absorbing them yourself. That is...pretty economically efficient! Seriously! Meanwhile, your "free" internal tool has an owner. That person has a salary. And every hour they spend building, debugging, documenting and maintaining your homemade $18/month SaaS replacement is an hour they aren't spending on something else. There are absolutely things we SHOULD build now that AI has made development so much cheaper. If a custom solution gives you a capability you can't buy, creates a meaningful competitive advantage, or gives you some ridiculous 5x improvement in revenue or efficiency? Build it! That makes sense. But spending 40 hours to eliminate a $200/month SaaS bill because we can now vibe code the replacement? Or building something "just because you now can, with AI"? Penny smart + dollar stupid. 😬 AI should massively expand the ease of building things...but it should not turn every GTM team into a tiny custom internal software company. 💀 (Inspired by xkcd #1319, “Automation” by Randall Munroe)

Jose Ortega liked thisJose Ortega liked thisA 24-year-old joined tech because he loved building things. Two years later, most days, he does not even want to open the laptop. A 31-year-old became the senior engineer everyone depended on. Every Sunday evening, he was depressed because Monday was getting closer. He could solve every incident except the one happening inside his own head. A developer opened a Docker issue in 2017. Three years later, someone asked him for an update. He replied that he no longer built software. He now made wooden furniture. It is a funny reply. It is also painfully easy for engineers to understand. Most people enter tech curious. They want to build, learn, solve hard problems, and make a decent life. Then the work slowly changes. You spend your day inside meetings and your night fixing what those meetings delayed. You carry on-call anxiety into dinner. Every deadline is urgent. Every quarter demands more output. Layoffs happen, the remaining team absorbs the work, and everyone pretends this is normal. Eventually, you stop hating the job and start believing you hate the craft. That is the cruel part of burnout. A person can spend years becoming good at something, then walk away convinced they never loved it. Sometimes the problem was never coding. It was what the environment kept doing to the person who coded. So yes, laugh at the furniture joke. But check on the engineer who keeps making jokes about quitting. They may already be much closer than you think.
