At the heart of the EUMETSAT satellite operations 🛰️ centre with the 2026 cohort of the International Joint Master’s in Satellite Systems and Applications of Université Paris-Est Créteil (UPEC) and Cape Peninsula University of Technology! 🚀🌍 What a great opportunity for our students, supported by the Académie Spatiale d'Île-de-France! A huge thanks to Bertrand Fougnie, Head of the Aerosols and Clouds Thematic Area at EUMETSAT, for welcoming us so warmly and for giving us an inside look at the fascinating new capabilities for aerosol and cloud observation offered by Europe’s latest Sentinel satellite missions. A very special thank you as well to Henda Guermazi, Prem Maheshwarkar, Ph.D. and Farouk Lemmouchi, now working at EUMETSAT and formerly PhD students whom I had the pleasure of supervising or contributing to supervising at LISA - Laboratoire Interuniversitaire des Systèmes Atmosphériques (Université Paris-Est Créteil (UPEC), CNRS, Université Paris Cité). And above all, thank you for giving our Master’s students this unique opportunity to discover the European space sector from the inside, meet inspiring professionals, and see a tangible path towards exciting careers in space and Earth observation. Satellite data is essential for understanding extreme weather and long-term climate trends. 🌍 🛰️   Yesterday during the ExtremWetterKongress & DeutscheKlimaManagementTagung - Germany’s flagship climate and extreme weather conference - EUMETSAT contributed with a live broadcast right from our briefing gallery above the mission control centres! 🎥   During the broadcast, Frank Kaspar, Head of Climate and Data Analytics at EUMETSAT, shared key insights into recent heatwaves in the Mediterranean and highlighted how satellite observations help us monitor our changing climate. His discussion with Mojib Latif about the consequences can be found in the conference livestream. 🛰 DWD und EUMETSAT: Gemeinsam für bessere Wetterwarnungen Seit 40 Jahren verbindet den Deutschen Wetterdienst (DWD) und EUMETSAT eine enge Zusammenarbeit. Die von EUMETSAT betriebenen Wettersatelliten liefern kontinuierlich wichtige Beobachtungsdaten über Europa und die gesamte Erde. Beim DWD fließen diese Daten unter anderem in die Wetterüberwachung, die numerische Wettervorhersage und die Klimabeobachtung ein. Besonders wichtig sind Satellitendaten bei der frühzeitigen Erkennung und Beobachtung von Wetterentwicklungen mit hohem Gefahrenpotenzial. Sie ermöglichen es Meteorologinnen und Meteorologen, atmosphärische Prozesse nahezu in Echtzeit zu verfolgen und daraus Informationen für zeitkritische Warnungen abzuleiten. Anlässlich des 40-jährigen Bestehens von EUMETSAT betont die DWD-Präsidentin die zentrale Rolle, die Satellitendaten heute dabei spielen, aus Beobachtungen konkrete, zeitkritische Warninformationen zu machen. Genau diese Verbindung von Erdbeobachtung, moderner Datenverarbeitung und meteorologischer Expertise ist ein wichtiger Bestandteil der Zusammenarbeit von EUMETSAT und DWD.
