This week I had the privilege to host not only HM The King of Denmark but also The European Commissioner for Intergenerational Fairness, Youth, Culture and Sport Glenn Micallef, and the Danish Minister of Culture Jakob Engel-Schmidt as part of the opening of the 10th Anniversary of the European Week of Sport 🤴🇪🇺🇩🇰 🏃‍♀️ It became an engaging day with some of our trusted partners and dedicated volunteers in the #BeActive spirit. During these times, when so much seems to be going in the wrong direction, we need to stand up for what we believe in. And do something about it. Which is what our volunteers and staff in GAME does every single day 🌍✊ I don't blame anyone for feeling at times that what was once right and wrong seems to have been turned upside down. Maybe that's why it means more this year to see that 𝐰𝐞 𝐡𝐚𝐯𝐞 𝐜𝐥𝐢𝐦𝐛𝐞𝐝 𝐮𝐩 𝐨𝐧 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐖𝐨𝐫𝐥𝐝 𝐓𝐨𝐩 200 𝐒𝐆𝐎 𝐥𝐢𝐬𝐭. In the Global South, young people make up the largest part of the population, but young voices and perspectives are often overlooked in favor of traditional approaches to local engagement and development. It is necessary to give young people ownership of their own future. By creating a supportive environment for – and involving young people as equal partners - we can harness the potential of young people as agents of change in development work. 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗧𝗿𝗶𝗰𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗲𝘀𝘀 𝗼𝗳 𝗬𝗼𝘂𝘁𝗵 𝗘𝗻𝗴𝗮𝗴𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 Therefore, young people must play a central role in any future development strategy. Many seem already to agree, so let’s not kick that open door off its doorframe. However, seen from GAME’s side, I would like to highlight the potential of ensuring a differentiated approach to youth involvement that addresses two overarching issues. ① First, traditional development projects in the youth field often focus on young people who are already active in civil society or have the courage and drive to take the initiative to change their local communities and lives. However, there are large groups of marginalized young people who grow up in disadvantaged areas or generally under living conditions where participation in NGO-led democracy programs or employment initiatives may seem very remote. If these groups are overlooked, it can reinforce already existing exclusion and division, and a great potential for creating collective action among young people can be lost. ➁ Secondly, too many development efforts focus on creating change for young people rather than creating change with and by young people. This is inappropriate, as it often compromises both the relevance and sustainability of the efforts.
