At Climate Week NYC, Nathanael Occenad, Regional HVDC Sales Manager at Hitachi Energy, showcased the Champlain Hudson Power Express (CHPE) project. During the "Pitch Perfect Lunch & Learn: Urban Climate Lab: Pitching the Future of Cities" presentation, he brought the project's infrastructure to life while demonstrating how CHPE is strengthening the grid, advancing New York's clean energy future, and delivering tangible benefits to communities across the region. Powered by Hitachi Energy's advanced High-Voltage Direct Current (HVDC) transmission technology, CHPE can deliver up to 1,250 MW of clean hydropower from Quebec, Canada, to New York, United States. The project includes two compact alternating current -to-direct current converter stations, one in each country. These converter stations are connected through virtually invisible underground and underwater cables, carefully installed to protect the sensitive ecosystems along the 375-mile corridor. By transmitting large amounts of electricity efficiently over long distances, HVDC technology helps improve grid reliability while supporting affordable energy delivery to consumers. CHPE is now online delivering clean electricity to more than one million people in New York, and it is projected to eliminate approximately 3.9 million tons of carbon emissions per year, supporting a healthier and more sustainable future for local communities. Our Hitachi Energy Lodi factory turned 100! 🎉 While most centenary celebrations are about looking back at history, ours turned into a conversation about the future. For a century, we have designed and manufactured technologies and lifecycle services in Lodi for customers in more than 100 countries. As the world electrifies, Lodi will continue delivering innovative solutions needed to strengthen and modernize the grid. This anniversary also celebrates generations of people whose passion, expertise, and commitment have made Lodi what it is today. We were honored to hear messages from Gilberto Pichetto Fratin, Italy’s Minister of the Environment and Energy Security, and Adolfo Urso, Italy’s Minister of Enterprises and Made in Italy, whose remarks highlighted the importance of innovation, industrial competitiveness, and the energy transition. Royal Visit for Hitachi Energy and Partners at Peterhead We were honored to be a part of His Majesty King Charles III's visit to Peterhead Port, where he met with Hitachi Energy, BAM, Balfour Beatty, and SSEN Transmission to hear about the collaboration driving Scotland’s clean energy future. The electricity system is fast becoming the backbone for UK economic growth – and Peterhead is a powerful example of why. Rapidly becoming one of the UK’s most important energy transition hubs, it brings together significant investment, innovation, and infrastructure projects, helping to deliver a more sustainable and resilient energy system. As home to one of the key connection points for Eastern Green Link 2, a significant project that will use our pioneering HVDC technology to efficiently move clean power from Scotland to demand centres further south, Peterhead plays a crucial role in Scotland’s decarbonization thanks to its unique position in harnessing the power of the North Sea. The visit was also a powerful reminder of the importance of collaboration across industry, communities, and government. Initiatives such as the Peterhead Energy Transition Forum provide an important opportunity for stakeholders, supply chains, and the local Peterhead community to come together, share perspectives, and play an active role in building a more secure, affordable, and sustainable energy system. At #NYCW26, Hitachi Energy Chief Technology Officer Gerhard Salge joined a roundtable discussion on modernizing the US transmission grid to meet rising electricity demand from data centers, manufacturing, and electrification. As Gerhard noted: "Grid-enhancing technologies offer a faster pathway to unlocking additional transmission capacity, with relatively low upfront investment and minimal disruption to existing infrastructure. By helping utilities make better use of the assets already in service, and making the right investments in an effective manner, they represent an important step toward building a more flexible, reliable, and resilient grid for the future." A timely research report from the Center on Global Energy Policy explores solutions to accelerate the adoption of grid-enhancing technologies (GETs). The report highlights that: "Power grid enhancement solutions, including grid-enhancing technologies (GETs) such as dynamic line ratings, advanced power flow control devices, and advanced conductors, can unlock substantial additional transmission capacity from existing infrastructure, often at a fraction of the cost of building new infrastructure and in months rather than years."
