Reinforcement learning agents choose actions by predicting their effect over a set horizon. That horizon is a configuration choice, and it decides what kind of controller you get: too short and the agent optimizes against a response it never sees; too long and it can't tell its own effect apart from the plant's ordinary variation. Alex Trudeau dives into the details in RLCore's latest blog. Head over to RLCore.ai to read more!

The Intelligence Layer for Industrial Automation — Powered by Reinforcement Learning.
About us
RL Core Technologies is a deep-tech company building the intelligence layer for industrial automation. Our flagship product, RLTune, delivers real-time autonomous optimization for complex industrial processes—continuously learning, adapting, and improving system performance under changing conditions. RLTune uses advanced reinforcement learning to understand each system’s dynamics and automatically optimize control actions in real time. The result: higher efficiency, lower operating costs, improved stability, and reduced environmental impact. Proven in live water and wastewater facilities (EPCOR, Drayton Valley), RLCore’s technology is industry- and process-agnostic, enabling rapid expansion into Energy storage & microgrids (BESS), Oil & gas, Chemicals, Food & beverage, Pulp & paper and other high-value industrial environments. RLCore partners with leading engineering firms and system integrators to bring autonomous optimization to industrial operations worldwide - helping operators run safer, cleaner, and more efficient plants. Autonomous. Adaptive. Optimized. We’re redefining the future of industrial control.

Join RLCore's Katie Higgins at SWAN - The Smart Water Networks Forum's 3rd UnConference workshop this Thursday, September 24th in London, UK! The workshop will focus on the "𝑴𝒆𝒔𝒔𝒚 𝑴𝒊𝒅𝒅𝒍𝒆 𝒐𝒇 𝑨𝑰," exploring the uncomfortable, ambiguous phase where the old world hasn’t fully let go, and the fully autonomous world hasn’t yet arrived. No matter how good the tools become, successful deployment still relies on organization adaptation, strong change management, engineering and process development, and all the cultural uncertainty in between. What strategies and frameworks do you believe the water industry needs to adopt in order to embrace and realize the benefits of digital water and novel control strategies? https://lnkd.in/dGpx_4xG #AILeadership #ChangeManagement #Water #Wastewater #ProcessOptimization #IndustrialControl #RTAO

The rapidly evolving narrative around AI focuses mainly on the technology, its efficacy, and its safety. And rightly so. But what about the human end-users putting this technology to work? Change management and the associated adoption curve, particularly for novel industrial control strategies, deserve more attention. Head over to rlcore.ai to read our latest blog, where Revan MacQueen explores how operators react to AI-based controllers in the water treatment industry, which strategies show success while managing the adoption curve, and best practices for a successful deployment: https://lnkd.in/eJ-H-Qki #AILeadership #changemanagement #ReinforcementLearning #IndustrialAI #Optimization #Water #WasteWater #SmartWater #DigitalWater #RTAO

RLCore is thrilled to officially join HRSD's innovation ecosystem! At Nansemond, we’re applying our RLTune software to a digital twin of the secondary treatment process, focused on AvN control and exploring how continuous-learning reinforcement learning can make operations more adaptive, efficient, and responsive to changing objectives. The opportunity is compelling: improve energy efficiency and nutrient removal by getting more out of existing infrastructure — without relying on new capital projects. This is exactly the kind of real-world industrial challenge we built RLCore to address. A huge thank you to Jay Bernas, P.E., Jeffrey Sparks, the HRSD team, Henry Croll, PhD, PE for the vision, technical foundation, and willingness to innovate with us. We’re excited about where this can go. If you’re at #WEFTEC2026, come visit RLCore at Booth 1008 in the Advanced Technologies Pavilion to learn more! #AILeadership #ReinforcementLearning #IndustrialAI #Optimization #Water #WasteWater #SmartWater #DigitalWater
We are beyond excited to announce a new startup to HRSD's innovation ecosystem: welcome, RLCore! We're always looking for ways to get more out of the infrastructure we already have, and reinforcement learning is one of the most promising frontiers in wastewater treatment operations. Building on HDR's earlier work demonstrating RL-based control optimization at our Nansemond Treatment Plant, RLCore is now bringing next-generation RL agents into the project — ones capable of continuous learning during deployment and adapting control objectives as our operational goals evolve. That's a real shift from the traditional train-test-deploy paradigm most RL approaches are stuck in. Right now, we're using RLCore's agents on a digital twin of our Nansemond plant (50 MGD), focused on AvN control of the secondary treatment process. The potential is significant: smarter, more adaptive control that could mean real energy savings and better nutrient removal, without a dollar of new capital investment. As we say at HRSD, “Innovation is the Key to Affordability” as we are passionately researching ways to keep rates low. This is exactly the kind of partnership that makes Hampton Roads the "Silicon Valley of Water" — pairing a willingness to go first with startups doing genuinely novel work. Grateful to the RLCore team and to HDR for the groundwork. More to come as this phase progresses. Check them out at WEFTEC - booth 1008 in the Advanced Technology Pavilion. Also, please visit HRSD at booth 6356 in the Utility Pavilion. Thanks to: Charles Bott Jeffrey Sparks Henry Croll, PhD, PE Ganesh Rao Martha White Nils S. Adam White Jonathan Bauer
