Edowin
Involvement[edit section | visual editor]
Act One[edit section | visual editor]
Edowin is a gold dwarf in the Forest at X: 139 Y: 446, near a bridge and stood over by his human subordinates Brynna and Andrick. Edowin is unconcious and mortally wounded by an Owlbear. When the party initiates a conversation with any of the three, Edowin's tadpole connects with that of the interacting party member and he speaks to them telepathically. Believing the player character to be one of the True Souls, he tells the player character to protect Andrick and Brynna. He orders them to obey the player character as a true soul before dying to his wounds. The conversation then shifts between the player and the subordinates. They explain that they were absolutists placed under Edowin's command searching for survivors of the crash site. Andrick explains that Edowin was fatally wounded while checking the Owlbear Nest for crash site survivors and that Edowin's spear was broken during the attack, evidenced by Edowin's Shaft of a Broken Spear. Andrick and Brynna can be ordered by the party to either report to the Goblin Camp, continue looking for survivors (in which case they both disappear and are not encountered again), or to assist in killing the Owlbear. The Head of a Broken Spear held by the Owlbear can be combined with the shaft to recreate the Vision of the Absolute spear which Edowin wielded in life.
If Brynna or Andrick assist in the fight against the owlbear and survive, they again ask for orders and either relocate to the goblin camp or disappear altogether depending on dialogue choices. If at any point they find out that the player character is themself a crash site survivor or are told that they are no a true soul, they immediately become hostile.
After ending the conversation near the bridge, the voice of the Dream Visitor is heard by the player suggesting that they should search Edowin's corpse. Doing so initiates a cutscene wherein the interacting party member is psionically controlled and compelled by Edowin's parasite to extract it, adding a Mind Flayer Parasite Specimen to the party inventory. If the player character resists extracting the tadpole with a successful saving throw, the parasite instead burrows its way out of the corpse and flees down the hill. Killing the tadpole before it escapes grants 10 XP. Edwin's dead tadpole can then be picked up or used as an improvised weapon.
This is most likely the first time the player hears the voice of the Dream Visitor if they never entered the Inner Sanctum to approach the Mind Flayer Parasite Specimen in Halsin's laboratory.
Notes[edit section | visual editor]
Brynna and Andrick refer to Edowin as brother in a monastic sense, similar to other absolutists throughout the setting referring to each other as brother and sister. They are not related to him.
