Empathy, understanding and respect are key to better listening – and better outcomes for everyone involved. #healthyconversationsPhillip (Sunny) Drury berkongsi kandungan iniListening to difficult conversations to make end-of-life care more inclusive. Death and dying can be difficult subjects to talk about. But when those conversations affect our own health, care, choices and wishes, everyone deserves the opportunity to understand and be heard. That was at the heart of our collaborative work with Li-Ve Tas and Speak Out Advocacy Tas on the Healthy Dying for People with Disability (HD4PWD) project. Rather than assuming how people with intellectual disability wanted these difficult and often complex subjects communicated, we listened. Through a co-design process, people with diverse intellectual and cognitive challenges shared their thoughts about disability, being human, living, dying, caring and home life – and importantly, what made information and communications easier for them to understand and connect with. Their insights were refreshingly clear, and challenged many industry and creative conventions. Those conversations informed the strategy and creative direction for a new HD4PWD identity and a suite of accessible education and communication materials, including easy read resources, information booklets, social media education campaigns, signage and promotional materials. The objective went well beyond simply making information easier to read. It was about empowering people with disability to have a greater say in their health, care, wishes and wellbeing – and helping their families, carers, support workers and health professionals have better conversations with them, not just about them. When creating human-centred communications, the most important thing is creating space for conversations that matter. That was at the heart of our collaborative work with Burnie Works on the North West First 1000 Days project – a community-led initiative supporting parents and caregivers from the moment of pregnancy through to a child's second birthday. Becoming a parent for the first time can be incredibly rewarding, but it can also bring uncertainty, isolation and challenges for the mental and emotional wellbeing of both mums and dads. Instead of assuming what families needed, the co-design process centered the conversation around their lived experience, what mattered to them and what would genuinely help. We then used those insights to guide the strategy, storytelling and creative development. The result was an overarching First 1000 Days brand, three regionally aligned identities for Burnie, Smithton and Devonport, and a suite of aligned practical, accessible physical and online resources and education tools. All created with parents, for parents. Because we know meaningful engagement isn't simply asking people what they think once the thinking has already been done – it's creating the opportunity for people to help shape the thinking in the first place. Real change doesn't happen because people are told what to do. It happens when communities are listened to, trusted, and empowered to lead the conversation themselves. The Flip the Vape (FTV) initiative was designed to help young aboriginal people make informed decisions about vaping through engaging, relatable and community-led communications. We're incredibly proud to have contributed to the FTV Tasmania campaign, with production oversight, social media scheduling and community management, and coordination of digital advertising delivery in partnership with Kings Digital, as part of the Flip the Vape Tasmania campaign led and authored by Mo Works for FLINDERS ISLAND ABORIGINAL ASSOC INC The integrated campaign also involved GoTransit Media Group bus ads, Claude Neon billboards, implementing targeted public posters, and organic social media driving engagement. Every touchpoint was designed to start conversations that matter. Because we know if people don't relate to and connect with the message on a human level, nothing changes. One of the big pieces I’ve been working on at Circular Head. I’ve loved seeing how good engagement can be when it’s not left to one person or team. When we took the draft strategy out to the community for feedback, people from across Council shared ideas and insights, and our Connected Communities team was such a great resource. They came along for street chats and workshops and kept the conversations going through community groups, events and organisations they were already connected with – then brought back what they were hearing. For a smallish council, we don’t have dedicated engagement resources, but we do have people who know our community really well. I reckon that’s a bit of a superpower. The strategy is adopted, and it’s actually got me – and others – asking more questions and seeing more opportunities now. So cool. Plenty to keep chipping away at.Phillip (Sunny) Drury memberikan reaksi pada kandungan iniOne thing that came through strongly while developing our new Communications and Engagement Strategy was the connection between internal and external communication. Our community told us they value clear, timely and honest information. They want to understand why decisions are made, how their feedback has been considered and what happens next. Our staff raised similar themes – the importance of good information sharing, clear communication about decisions and consistent messages. Together, that reinforced something simple: being clear with our community starts with being clear inside the organisation. We're putting that into practice – explaining more, sharing information earlier, using plainer language and giving more of the why, not just the what. At the same time, we're strengthening the internal communication that supports this – how we share information, how we keep people informed, and how we build communication and engagement into projects from the beginning. There’s a lot happening at Circular Head Council now, and plenty more ahead as we work towards Vision 2050. I'm back, LinkedIn friends! 👋 After a bit of a hiatus, it seems fitting that my return post is about bringing people together over great food, wine and Hobart hospitality. I'm now in my second year as Secretary of Skål Hobart, and this September we have the pleasure of hosting the Skål Australia National Assembly.
