Our new POV, Modern Software Engineering, digs into the shift as AI agents and Platform Engineering converge. A few takeaways: 💡 Adoption is real, but uneven. 90% of technology professionals now use AI daily (DORA, 2025), and Capgemini Research Institute expects 4 in 5 software professionals to be using generative AI by 2026. Yet only 27% of organizations have the platforms and governance to harness it safely. 🛠️ Roles are moving from doing to governing. Engineers are writing less code and orchestrating more of it — shaping intent, setting guardrails, and validating AI-generated outputs rather than hand-coding every feature. U.S. job postings mentioning generative AI skills are up 323% in a year. 💲 Trust is nuanced, not binary. 70% of developers trust AI-generated code; 30% don't. And every 25% increase in AI adoption correlates with a 7.2% rise in delivery instability. Speed without control isn't progress. ⚖️ Platforms are the backbone. Scaling agentic software engineering isn't a tooling exercise — it takes governed platforms, redesigned teams, and deliberate upskilling to turn isolated experiments into enterprise capability. Over time, we've seen AI evolve from coding assistants supporting individual tasks to increasingly sophisticated agents capable of contributing across the software lifecycle as full team members. The question is no longer whether AI is influencing software engineering. It already is. What interests us is how these capabilities are incorporated into software engineering disciplines. How do we bring AI into the software lifecycle in a way that strengthens quality, security and compliance? And how do we create platforms where humans, AI agents and automation can work together effectively, at scale, with the appropriate governance and controls in place? These themes sit at the heart of our POV. They require a comprehensive approach that recognizes the different types of work across the lifecycle, preserves the team interactions and shared understanding on which software engineering depends, and applies human judgment where it matters most. While the technology continues to evolve, one thing remains constant: successful software engineering depends on combining reimagination with engineering rigor. Around 27 volunteers joined the Rotary Club of Hall, the Ginninderra Catchment Group, and the Hall Volunteer Rural Fire Service, planting trees, moving soil, clearing garden areas, and improving habitat for bees and other pollinators. A big thank you to all our volunteers and community groups, but especially to Jonathan Palmer who brought the original event together in 2022 and once again, made this year's day possible. Today Amazon Web Services (AWS) became the first cloud provider approved for NATO RESTRICTED workloads across every NATO member nation. Allies and defense industry partners now have a common assessed baseline to build from, instead of each nation working through much of the same evaluation independently. So why would you modernize an application before understanding what's inside it? I frequently see the words Migration and Modernization being used interchangeably when talking about Custom Applications. Some may think I'm being pedantic. I'm not. The distinction has very real consequences for cost, risk, timelines, and delivery assurance. One thing particularly worries me: teams discussing concrete modernization timelines, budgets, and pathways before they clearly understand the application's internals. For me, that's a warning sign.
