Spring quarter is wrapping up at Harris, and I find myself sitting with more questions than I started with. That feels like the right outcome. I came back to school after fifteen years. (Full time, mentally I never left). I was wary, I had my doubts. I expected it to be hard to keep up. It turns out the hardest part is unlearning. Letting go of the assumptions you didn't know you were carrying. That has been uncomfortable and genuinely valuable. Three quarters done and I finally want to sit down and take the time to reflect. I have worked with data and quant all my life, Sciences in high school, Engineering in College, Engineering postgrad, Economics (as a continuous interest) and Taxes at work. But deep down I have always been drawn to the social sciences - psychology, human behavior, sociology and economics beyond the models and econometrics. I enjoyed pretty much all courses I took, but there were three which stood out, not so much for the content but for where they kept landing. I took Behavioral Science and Public Policy to fulfil my childish desire of being a psychology major at some point. Our group project explored why women disengage from financial decisions even when they have the resources and capability. As I had thought, it was never about understanding investment, It was about identity, perceived relevance, and who the financial world seems to be designed for. I have seen versions of this issue in my own home. With this course I gained the vocabulary for it (and hopefully a commitment plan.) I audited Human Capital and the Economy expecting labor economics. What I got was a framework for thinking about why people invest in themselves, why parents invest in their children, why we marry who we do, why we decide to have (or not) as many kids as we do, and why institutions so often get the incentives wrong. I keep thinking about it in contexts far beyond the classroom. I took two sequences of Analytical Politics and understood so much of what I was always perplexed about in the policy world. Many a times, I would sit at my desk in a Commissionerate - thinking about who had written a particular notification in the particular way they had, often lamenting the complexity and resulting legal battles of different interpretations. AP taught me the complex political reasons that become the cause of so many policy distortions. My work at TRU had already given me respect for the work that those delegated legislation writers did, AP strengthened that by bolstering my understanding of the causes of the 'second best policy'. I also noticed something across courses I did not expect to connect: whether it is game theory, labor markets, or behavioral interventions, the interesting questions always come back to what actually drives people. Not what we assume drives them. I do not know yet what I will do with all of this. But I am glad I stopped long enough to learn it. Already looking forward to the next year!

It was great to see Whitehaven’s Misha Fazen, Group Manager - Systems, Performance, Data Analytics HSE, contribute to the recent ACS NSW Regional Roadshow, with the final session in Armidale this week bringing together technology professionals, industry leaders and the local community for important conversations around AI. Across presentations in Newcastle, Wollongong and Armidale, Misha spoke from industry experience, not academia, sharing practical insights that helped shift the discussion beyond AI hype to what actually works in practice. Her sessions focused on the real challenges organisations face when adopting AI, including: ➡️ how to build trust in AI-supported decisions ➡️ where automation ends and augmentation begins ➡️ why change fatigue and fear can quietly derail progress ➡️ how to actually bring people along with you Misha highlighted that without the right culture, communication and capability, even well-designed AI initiatives can struggle to deliver meaningful outcomes. It is valuable to see these conversations taking place across regional communities, creating space for genuine discussion and shared learning.
