A missing pinned submodule commit can make an otherwise readable anonymous repository fail completely. GitHub returns a specific invalid-object 422 for that child tree; the submodule handler previously tolerated only 404.
Mark that child unavailable and preserve parent files. The handling is confined to the child tree request; parent metadata errors, unrelated validation failures, rate limits and outages still propagate. No source identity or pinned commit is changed.
Validation: 23 submodule tests passed, including parent-tree ingestion with the invalid child, no upstream metadata for the unavailable mount, parent metadata failure propagation, unrelated 422 responses, rate limits and server errors. TypeScript compilation (
tsc --noEmit), focused ESLint and diff checks passed.
